To wonder how people can afford a takeaway for a family?

We haven't had a takeaway for a while and I was thinking about ordering one for the family as a treat tonight. I decided not to once I worked out the price, I just couldn't justify paying 1/3 of my weekly groceries budget, £30 on a curry for 4.
When did you last have a takeaway?
How much did it cost and how many did it feed?

4 adults? Where I live, a curry or rice dish is between £10-14. The portion is tiny! So £30 sounds like a bargain

Jesus I don’t know where your anger comes from but will you focus maybe on replying to posts you agree with or something? Or vent your anger on someone else. Eat and buy what the hell you want.

I’m sorry my reply doesn’t meet your standards. I’ll give your opinion the consideration it deserves.

Im unsure exactly what makes you feel I’m “angry” as your replies have most definitely had a far more arsey undertone than mine.

WELL THEY STARTED IT! 😂

I actually made a lovely homemade curry tonight, it’s almost like you can enjoy cooking home-made food AND enjoy takeaways. Who knew?

Lol. Seriously I hope you had a lovely meal. This is a stupid argument!

FunnysInLaJardin · 16/04/2023 22:57

we could afford it but never have take aways as they are too expensive, plus we actually prefer the food we cook at home. DS's included!

It isn't a treat, its actually an expensive PITA

Abcdefgh1234 · 16/04/2023 23:32

family of 5 £40-£80 takeaway once a week every weekend.

But may i ask, Why you want to know? It wouldn’t changed anyting. It only makes you feel miserable. Comparing yourself to someone else its a thief of joy.

Skodacool · 16/04/2023 23:37

Buy it at a supermarket and heat it up yourself, much better value

Yes inclined to agree. For us it’s the convenience rather than the food as such. We usually have them if for example, we’ve just come back from a holiday and need food quickly but we are too tired to cook after a long journey.

Divorcedalongtime · 16/04/2023 23:59

£30 is super cheap. I pay for 3 teenagers and myself and it’s a lot more than that, even when we order just pizza it’s more, maybe not if chineses because we all want Singapore noodles
anyway, I nowadays also pay for eldests girlfriend so the days of cheap takeaways of just above £20 are way in the past.

Ukrainebaby23 · 17/04/2023 02:15

We used to have a takeaway almost every weekend, now it's once in 6 weeks or so, but our budget was doomed for a while.
Its what you choose to spend your money on, depending on your income obvs. We only heat house to 14/15 degrees, and walk where we can, others choose 20 degrees and a smart car, I do wonder how folk afford 30k+ for a car tbf but a takeaway I think is down to personal spending decisions.

Ps one takeaway = beans on toast extra 2times a week for us, plus reused tea bags, but we enjoy it and can't afford many treats.

clarehhh · 17/04/2023 07:06

Sounds cheap to me, don’t think of it as part of your food budget. Think of it as instead of going out. Likely to be some leftovers to reheat for lunch the next day too.

I mean - reusing tea bags and eating beans on toast twice a week just so you can have a takeaway seems crazy to me. But you live and learn. I had no idea takeaway food was so important to people.

EmpeBe · 17/04/2023 08:16

The only take away we have is fish & chips once a month. We share 2 large portions between 4 which is more than enough and rarely finished. Takeaways are very overpriced and vary hugely in quality but you paying for the convenience. You can get the same meal types of consistent high quality from M&S or Waitrose at half the price or less. A good compromise would be to plan ahead, buy those when you shop and stick them in the microwave. A lot cheaper, just as good if not better and whilst not quite as convenient it’s not a huge effort.

Devoutspoken · 17/04/2023 08:21

Depends what you choose to spend hour money on, running a car, keeping a pet, smoking etc, all these things cost money

Wow, that takeaway food must be really good to make such sacrifices for it?!

Quizzed · 17/04/2023 08:25

I had a Chinese yesterday as it was my birthday and I spent £21 it was only for 2 off us but could have feed 4 as I have loads of left overs which I shall be eating today. If I get a pizza and chips from the local take away it's far cheaper than chain pizzas etc it just depends on where you get your take away from. I budget in a take away into my food budget and normally have 1-2 a month.

gogohmm · 17/04/2023 08:31

The cost of eating out is part of our entertainment budget, we have a bigger budget than you. We don't really get takeaways as we prefer eating out

gogohmm · 17/04/2023 08:34

Ps I cook curry, so easy and fun for kid's making chapattis

Blaueblumen · 17/04/2023 08:40

Just get them from the supermarket when you do your weekly shop. Pop them into the oven for 15 mins and you're ready to enjoy! Cheaper and you can add any toppings you like.

EyesOnThePies · 17/04/2023 08:55

Many takeaway pizzas use ‘analogue cheese’ made from solidified oil etc.

Pseudonamed · 17/04/2023 09:01

The kids here wont eat frozen pizza. If I am cutting down I will buy the stonebaked pizza bases in aldi and they make their own but they do not like frozen ones at all.

DanceMonster · 17/04/2023 09:02

Frozen pizzas are, generally, rank. In my opinion.

Is this why pizzas often just tastes of grease?
We rarely have takeaways now, one of the main reasons is cost but another is the cheese on a takeaway pizza doesn't taste like real cheese, it's just a greasy oily taste and all the local takeaways have the same bland flavour, they must all use the same pizza sauce
