To wonder how people can afford a takeaway for a family?

We haven't had a takeaway for a while and I was thinking about ordering one for the family as a treat tonight. I decided not to once I worked out the price, I just couldn't justify paying 1/3 of my weekly groceries budget, £30 on a curry for 4.
When did you last have a takeaway?
How much did it cost and how many did it feed?

You’re looking at more than £30 for a takeaway for 4! I can afford a takeaway as my income is ok, I’m not rich rich but if I want a takeaway I will just order one. We don’t tend to have many, kids have them now and then, I’m more like every 3 months or so, then only when I visit family

They probably can't. But see it as a cost of living and get in with it and don't spend as much on other things like shoes for their kids, so they're running round in shitty £12 trainers from ShoeZone that fall apart after 8 weeks.

Christ!
Do you also believe that everyone on benefits shouldn't have a smart phone and all have 50" TVs?
Judgy and unpleasant

BillyNoM8s · 16/04/2023 09:31

I dunno how some people have such cheap takeaways.

We pay about £60 for 4. That's typically 3 main curries, 2 veggie side dishes, 3 naan breads, 4 poppadoms and 2 rice. No leftovers. Not sure if we're pigs or our locals are pricey. Possibly both.

Our favourite Chinese place is so extortionate I actually refuse to order from there any more. It's over £100.

Thai also very nice but very expensive.

I mean, having pizza two days in a row sounds gross. Why on earth you'd pay nearly 40 for the privilege of eating heated up pizza for two days is beyond me.

Maybe because that’s what people like to do and not everyone is the same as you?

You said in an earlier post you haven’t had takeaway in 20+ years and rarely eat out so you’re probably coming at it from a very different mindset.

It’s like someone judging you for having your bacon roll or cheesy chips at a sports event, wouldn’t be my cup of tea but we’re all different aren’t we!

£65 for Chinese for us 5. We don’t get it often - twice a year max. I’m amazed by families who get them weekly. We’re on good salaries and friends on similar earnings are the same re take away but those earning significantly less seem to get them more regularly.

I feel the same way. Unfortunately, a number of people I know who eat out regularly and have take out regularly (and by regularly, I mean 2-3x per week!), also appear to work for cash in hand.

Oh sure. But my chips or bacon roll cost a fiver.

That’s great if that what you like! We spend £40-£50 on a gorgeous Asian near us for a takeaway and it makes us happy, we’re lucky we don’t have a budget-the point I was making is we are all different, with different tastes and budgets.

Different strokes for different folks!

What relevance does the price have? If other people can afford it and they enjoy it, what does it matter to you if they’re spending £50 on a takeaway? Maybe in terms of disposable income £50 to them is the equivalent of £5 to you?

Of course not. But paying 20 to have reheated pizza the next day doesn't encourage me to start getting takeaways. If you think that's worth it, then fine. I choose to spend money in other ways!

I don’t spend £20 to buy pizza and have it reheated the next day 🤷🏻‍♀️, I don’t like pizza. I actually spend far more than that on either our local Lebanese takeaway, or sometime Thai, or Mexican. Couldn’t care less what other people do with their own money though.

Rosebel · 16/04/2023 09:49

We had take away last night. Four of us. 15 chicken nuggets, 2 battered sausages and 2 large chips. £16.

JaneFondue · 16/04/2023 09:49

Such a weird discussion. I don't eat bacon rolls or some of the other food people posted as SOO much cheaper. It's not to my taste. I eat Indian, Thai, Vietnamese, Sri Lankan, Mexican, and Mediterranean.

And the shoes thing is still going, is it?🙄

We probably eat out about once a month. But we never have takeaways - we would always cook a treat meal at home and for quick meals there is invariably something quick we can whip up at home from leftovers we have put in the freezer.

Yesterday, we (2 adults and 2 teens) had king prawn pathia, garlic and coriander rice, cauliflower 65, raita, beetroot salad and garlic naan - all homemade and for less than £12 in total. It would have been at least 4x that for takeaway.

This is what I do. For me a takeaway is such poor value for money when I can make something nicer (and usually healthier) that we will enjoy more.

We love pizza but make our own and everyone can choose their toppings.

A lot of people obviously enjoy their takeaways! We all have different priorities and this thread has been quite an eye opener for me.

I made a curry last night in the time we would have waited for delivery. We had chicken saag, rice, garlic flatbreads, poppadom and chutney, raita, salad and onion bhaji (I made a batch a few weeks ago and froze).

I'm not comparing bacon rolls to Thai etc, I love all those foods. I make them myself or occasionally go out to eat them. I was trying to think of anything equivalent to a takeaway that I did eat. And that's a bacon roll after a race!

I'm far too stingy to spend 70 on a family meal!

Location, location, location mostly.

Where do you live to be paying £100 for a Chinese takeaway?

If you work cash in hand, you usually get paid per shift, and there usually isn’t enough to save money towards bills AND do a “proper” shop. Also, many cash in hand workers actually get a free meal - I know when my partner did delivery driving for a takeaway, we all got free dinner (we usually all shared a meal)

I know - I’d die if it was over £20 😂

Mine came to £24 once and I was shocked 😂

LibrariansGiveUsPower · 16/04/2023 10:02

Either they earn more or they spend less on other stuff. Everyone has different priorities.

I’ll pay £30 for a takeaway but can’t remember the last time I went out to the cinema. Never go out drinking or on nights out - I save a fortune there. Can’t understand how people happily sink £100 to not even remember what happened. But each to their own.

I’d want them to do the dishes for me at that price point!

Here you are about £4-£6 per dish. Sides are about £2-£5 each. We usually have two dishes and three sides which does 2 adults, a primary aged kid and a toddler, with leftovers for the next day. Costs us about £18. If buying for four adults we would probably do 3 meals and two sides, so probably around £22.

IAmTheWalrus85 · 16/04/2023 10:08

We don’t. We like takeaways but there are other ‘luxuries’ we like more and we can’t afford them all.

Somanycats · 16/04/2023 10:11

Kebab takeaway for two last night. It was amazing. £16. That's the cheapest takeaway round here.

ThinWomansBrain · 16/04/2023 10:15

Blaueblumen · 16/04/2023 07:05

Fish & chips - one portion, but it was huge, enough for two. £2.99

I can't imagine there being much quality fish in there, for that price! Shock

It's fine - the concept of too good to go is that it's the restaurant offloading whatever is cooked but not sold at the end of the evening.
Sometimes you don't get fish, it might be a sausage or pie - but a portion of chips at their normal prices is £4, or fish and chips around £20.

Before Too Good to Go I'd occasionally get chips and add chicken or something else from the fridge.
There's also a local pizza place that does two squares of deliciously thin pizza for £3, and occasionally a great French restaurant at an extravagant £4.

The last time I ordered a full price takeaway work was paying; the cost is a minimum of £20 - £25 around here, if I'm spending that I'd prefer to eat out.

NoWordForFluffy · 16/04/2023 10:17

JennyWren87 · 16/04/2023 09:00

Our last takeaway was Papa John's pizza. Two large, stuffed crust. It was an indulgence and an eye watering £38. Fed two adults for two days. We have young toddlers they don't really have any takeaway yet apart from the odd Happy Meal.

BUT I am NEVER paying that much again. Only reason I caved was because I'd been traveling solo (train, plane, car) all day with a 1 and a 2 two year old so just wanted something easy.

We're done now til Payday I think.

Sounds like you didn't check for an offer. You shouldn't have to pay that much for two pizzas if you take advantage of one of their many offers.

We don't get takeaways very often and, if we do, it's only for the kids; we'll eat something else.

You must live a long way from the Indian restaurant or that is one super quick curry recipe (in which case, please share!). I make cracking curries, but I wouldn't call them a quick meal to knock up, and I find they are usually better the next day anyway.
