To wonder how people can afford a takeaway for a family?

We haven't had a takeaway for a while and I was thinking about ordering one for the family as a treat tonight. I decided not to once I worked out the price, I just couldn't justify paying 1/3 of my weekly groceries budget, £30 on a curry for 4.
When did you last have a takeaway?
How much did it cost and how many did it feed?

I feel like a proper fat bastard, we have a takeaway about twice a week on average.

How are people finding takeaways so cheap?? I'm in London and take away prices are now insane. My local Indian is £15/dish. My local fish and chip shop is £14 for fish + £3 for chips!

By not living in London 🤣

Eh? I don’t live in London and I could not give 11 people a full meal from a Chinese takeaway for 45 quid.

Farmerama1 · 15/04/2023 22:44

We rarely buy takeaways but recently got fish and chips X2 with curry sauce, mushy peas and a pickled egg - cost £25.

Our food budget includes a takeaway for 5 once a week. We usually spend around £60 on it.

We can also afford shoes 🙄

Same here and have had loads over last week as have been out for Easter lots, so lots of restaurants/takeaways. People have different wages and disposable incomes obviously.

Verbena17 · 15/04/2023 22:45

We had Chinese take away tonight - £22.60 for 3 of us.
You can buy a Waitrose Chinese or Indian meal for 2 for £11.50….so you could buy x2 for the 4 of you and still be way under your £30! You get a really generous amount.

Small fish chips and peas at local chip shop is £4.50

Best value Indian is to do a set meal (see attached pic) we went out Christmas Day and had Poppadoms, chutney tray, 2 starters, 2 mains, a rice, 2 naan breads, coffee and an ice cream (plus 4 lagers) and it was £50 for 2 of us

Pizza is £15 on a Tuesday for a 20 inch

A takeaway curry at my DPs about 2 weeks ago. Not loads of dishes, probably 4, plus 3 pilau rice and 2 naan breads. To feed 4 adults, 1 teenager and 1 pre-schooler. It’s a treat, and our family have always done it once every 5 weeks or so, bar times when my DF was unemployed when we were younger. My DPs paid.

At home, DH, DS and I had takeaway Pizza Express for DS’s birthday because he asked for it and we’d been out all day. We all enjoyed it and don’t do it more than once every 6 weeks or so at home. We’re high earners but have huge mortgage/childcare costs, so we don’t do it weekly or anything, but we’re also fortunate we don’t have to cut them out completely. I wouldn’t do takeaway for a family of 8 or something though - unjustifiably expensive.

Same here. This week we’ve had an Indian takeaway, Wagamamas, a meal in Wahaca, a service station McDonald’s and Pizza Express. We don’t usually do this but it’s the Easter holidays and we went away for a couple of days.

Maple2023 · 15/04/2023 22:49

And chinese set meal for 4

We just prioritise a takeaway over our children's needs, we then use the left over naans, pitta breads etc to make them little flip flops to wear..... 🙄

dottiedodah · 15/04/2023 22:51

We tend to go out occasionally instead.however med cod and chips 11 pounds each here! That's about 44.00 for us.tend to buy oven chips and fish from supermarket now

Oneandonly22 · 15/04/2023 22:51

We have one every Friday night our as kids stay with their GP’s. It’s our treat to ourselves not to cook and have a quiet chilled night. We were about £40 but its probably cheaper than us going out for a meal. We always intend to go out but we’re usually too knackered.

Excellent idea, I’m going to use this one. Saves us a trip to shoezone!

Stealth boasting that you nibble your food and have leftovers lol

raincamepouringdown · 15/04/2023 22:54

Take away is crazy expensive so we don't do it.

TwoBlueFish · 15/04/2023 22:55

£22 chippy tea for 4 adults yesterday.

we probably get a takeaway once every couple of week and it’s usually £25-£30

UmbilicusProfundus · 15/04/2023 22:55

Desperate to hear more details about the chinese for 11 for only 45 quid. We can easily spend more than this for 2. Perhaps you all just like plain boiled rice with a squirt of sweet and sour sauce?

I don't buy ready meals so wouldn't spend £23 on two meals for two from a supermarket. I would rather make my own, I enjoy cooking.

I am shocked at how much some people regularly spend on takeaways, I'm obviously very out of touch!!!
I would rather put that money towards a nice holiday, but we are free to make our own choices.

TeenLifeMum · 15/04/2023 22:56

£65 for Chinese for us 5. We don’t get it often - twice a year max. I’m amazed by families who get them weekly. We’re on good salaries and friends on similar earnings are the same re take away but those earning significantly less seem to get them more regularly.

I’m not saying this to be an arse, but surely you know there are people who can afford takeaways and nice holidays? It’s not always either/or. If I had to sacrifice holidays to have regular takeaways then I probably wouldn’t do it, but thankfully we don’t have to.

We don't live in London Grin

Regular fish and chips is £5.70
A main meal from the Chinese is £4.80
A 10" pizza is £6-10 depending on the toppings
A burger and chips is £7.50
A kebab and chips is £8.50

Leakingtoilet · 15/04/2023 22:58

We don't. Only one I've had this year was a girls weekend away and it cost £80 and fed 6 of us for one night and 3 the night after.

Fortunately I'm not fussed by takeaways apart from the odd bag of chips

Itstarts · 15/04/2023 22:59

00100001 · 15/04/2023 19:55

They probably can't. But see it as a cost of living and get in with it and don't spend as much on other things like shoes for their kids, so they're running round in shitty £12 trainers from ShoeZone that fall apart after 8 weeks.

You have to laugh! Shoezone ad came up right under your post! 🤣

ChickenMacaroni · 15/04/2023 23:00

@Ihatepainting as I said it is 7 kids in those 11 people... no teenagers either yet! You get a bottle of coke and 2 bags of prawn crackers free too 😅
