Any bread type healthy bake I can replace my morning staple of white bread and butter? I go through weeks on bran flakes but always return to toast. Anything delicious that wouldn't feel like second prize?x

This thread is making me starving for some..."toast....lovely toast.....I like toast" 🎶

blackpearwhitelilies · 14/04/2023 00:49

My favourite part of the day is taking two pieces of toast with orange curd back to bed with two big mugs of coffee. Bliss.

Namchange101 · 14/04/2023 00:54

I dream of the days when my flat mates and I would sit and eat a whole loaf bread, toasted. With butter and jam.

SixPurpleChairs · 14/04/2023 01:45

Toast is so underrated- I could live on it! Keep the toast.

Kingsmill products are absolutely awful…..all of them really horrible

I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree on that one

AliceOlive · 14/04/2023 04:23

I felt wrong even opening this thread. I’m team toast.

Funny timing. I went to see a dietitian this morning and she said I should cut and replace toast. She advised cereal as it's more nutritious and whilst I don't have to aim for 30g, I could see what size bowl I'd be happy with and look at reducing so I have ordered food scales.

I have approx six slices of goodness a day so I should cut down but if two slices in the morning kick starts your day and makes you happy then do it!

How is cereal more nutritious thsn toast? ! Are you sure this woman is qualified?!?

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 14/04/2023 05:59

Life wihout toast is possible - but pointless. 😁

Depends which cereal she recommended and why…if the poster is diabetic and currently eating white bread toast with processed butter replacement spread and the dietician recommended Weetabix or All-Bran, then that would be a more nutritious swap. But if the poster has seeded whole grain bread with real butter and the dietician recommended any old cereal stuffed full of sugar then they don’t sound like someone to take diet advice from!

TakeMyStrongHand · 14/04/2023 06:36

@Luredbyapomegranate she works for the NHS at the GP.

It's definitely more nutritious if you think about it. Bread has nothing good and butter is ok. Cereal has calcium and protein (barely) in the milk and is fortified with vitamins.

I have toast most mornings, I haven’t bought white bread for a long time though, I toast granary bread. Occasionally, like this morning, I have two crumpets instead.

TakeMyStrongHand · 14/04/2023 07:01

@BenCoopersSupportWren not diabetic but yes that gorgeous fluffy white bread to be swapped with shreddies or muesli.

Cheesedoffandgrumpy · 14/04/2023 07:27

Bran flakes and white bread are both pretty bad options because they are highly processed, quickly digested and contain a lot of sugar.
Processed carbs are very quickly broken down into sugar in the gut. Sugar does not fill you up, spikes blood suagr, and causes you to crave more carbs/sugar.

I've started making this www.mynewroots.org/site/2013/02/the-life-changing-loaf-of-bread/

White bread it is not but I like it as a toast substitute

I said All Bran, not Bran Flakes. Two completely different cereals with very different sugar contents and nutritional values.

(I have a diabetic person in my household, I know about this stuff.)

not being rude but sliced bread is so ultra processed. I’d switch to porridge or yogurt and fruit, or scrambled egg and mushrooms

Why would it be rude to say bread is processed?

Cheesymonster · 14/04/2023 08:40

Life is short. Have toast and damn well enjoy it.

I have just had a slice of seeded granary, well toasted with loads of butter and a slice of Swiss cheese. Makes me so happy.

carriedout · 14/04/2023 08:48

I have toast a lot but never ultra processed bread.

LSSG · 14/04/2023 19:34

Bread is at best a filler food, at worst an irritant. Not terribly nutritious and the processed sliced loaves have all kinds of rubbish in them. I also love toast so this is my compromise.

Sourdough is better than normal bread so I buy that from nice bakeries that list ingredients and don't use any rubbish, just flour water etc. I also buy it unsliced, got myself a kick ass bread knife, and slice it really thinly (also good as it is soooo expensive these days).

Obviously great if you bake it yourself but I've no time for that atm, maybe one day.

I also buy the best butter I can afford, organic grass fed etc.
