Any bread type healthy bake I can replace my morning staple of white bread and butter? I go through weeks on bran flakes but always return to toast. Anything delicious that wouldn't feel like second prize?x

Could you reduce to one slice (I'm presuming you have 2 slices?,)and have a bowl of fruit/yogurt with it.
Or maybe a crumpet?

Like, one crumpet? Do crumpets not have to be toasted in pairs?

With lashings of butter on hot toast and a scraping of Gentleman’s relish, food of the Gods.

The problem with toast is that it's so moreish and my impulse control in the morning is poor, so I don't have any.

Sometimes at the weekend, with lime & cardamom marmalade & black coffee.

You can't just drop a bombshell like that... lime & cardamom marmalade?? Why have I never heard of this? This is right up my street!!

Crumpets have to be toasted in pairs, you are correct. They get sad otherwise...

Whataretheodds · 13/04/2023 22:27

Shop-bought sliced bread is ultra-processed. Can you bake your own or get some proper sourdough?
Make sure you have some proper protein with it.

You could also try protein pancakes - they are a Dukan recipe i think - made with oat bran, quark or skyr or low fat cottage cheese, and an egg

ThinWomansBrain · 13/04/2023 22:31

Bread with lots of seeds on is good - can be messy though, the seeds go everywhere.
Vogel's bread is nice, I like most of their loaves, and walnut bread toasted and dripping in butter is amazing.

ghostyslovesheets · 13/04/2023 22:34

Leave the fun suckers to their porridge and yoghurt OP and have two slices of processed white bread dripping in salted butter - it's divine

I have it every day - I refuse to give it up - for the competitive eaters who will crawling all over this thread by morning telling you carbs are evil, 'no wonder we have an obesity crisis in this country, I eat dust for breakfast I am neither over weight or unhealthy!

Mariposista · 13/04/2023 22:37

Given the crap that some people eat for breakfast, toast is not a bad option. I mean, don't smother it in Nutella or chunks of full butter, but you could be doing far worse.

dropthevipers · 13/04/2023 23:24

you need to develop a massive coke habit, so toast will be the least of your problems. Ta Da!

TenThousandSpoons · 13/04/2023 23:34

I thought this was going to be a thread about you needing to cut down a 37 slices of toast a day habit.

Love all the toast love.

I recommend tiger bread toast with butter and marmite.

BreviloquentBastard · 13/04/2023 23:38

My sister is one of the fittest, healthiest people I know and she eats toast for breakfast every morning. Ignore all the fun sponges and their low fat Greek yoghurt and tablespoon servings of plain porridge. Life's too short to worry about toast!

ClaraBourne · 13/04/2023 23:39

Nothing quite like a cup of tea and toast in bed on a lazy morning.

TakeMyStrongHand · 13/04/2023 23:42

Funny timing. I went to see a dietitian this morning and she said I should cut and replace toast. She advised cereal as it's more nutritious and whilst I don't have to aim for 30g, I could see what size bowl I'd be happy with and look at reducing so I have ordered food scales.

I have approx six slices of goodness a day so I should cut down but if two slices in the morning kick starts your day and makes you happy then do it!

TwoMonthsOff · 13/04/2023 23:44

@coodawoodashooda
I would suggest putting crunchy peanut butter, or mrs darlingtons lemon and lime marmalade, or the Lidl black cherry extra fruit conserve on…..that should put you off 🤣

Er, no.

If you want an ever-so-slightly healthier option you could try Kingsmill 50/50 instead of white bread? It toasts just as well and makes a pretty good sandwich too.

Ilovetocrochet · 13/04/2023 23:55

Well, I had toast for my tea tonight as I couldn’t be bothered to cook anything else! One slice with the remains of some tuna with mayo that I had on a sandwich yesterday and one slice with just butter - I felt virtuous though as it was seeded whole meal!

TheChosenTwo · 13/04/2023 23:59

I don’t have a toaster (because I hate stuff on the sides 😂) so we have to do toast in the grill.
I’m absolutely convinced that the reason I’m not twice the size I am is because of my lack of toaster. Toast done under the grill is 100% not the same as toaster toast and therefore I almost never eat it unless on holiday somewhere with a toaster. So if you’re serious about giving up toast (which I’m almost certain you aren’t!) just get rid of your toaster!!

Kingsmill products are absolutely awful…..all of them really horrible

It just gets all dried up and crusty under the grill doesn’t it

TheChosenTwo · 14/04/2023 00:13

Oh yeah @TwoMonthsOff - it’s just crap and not at all the same, I don’t bother at all!

Oh stick with the toast, op. I too love white toast but have managed to wean myself onto Jacksons Bloomin' both which is lovely. I have marmite on weekdays and baked beans or scrambled egg on toast at the weekends.

Who remembers this classic

Thanks a bloody lot - I now have that friggin song in my head!
