Do we report this car?

Trying to be as neutral as possible here. Next door neighbours have a car that they park terribly. They regularly park across our drive, sometimes leave it in the middle of the road (when they can’t get parked outside their house) and totally block the street while unloading shopping/work stuff etc. They seem nice enough when I see them, but they’re inherently selfish with their actions- loud music, dogs barking all night etc. A friend visited last week who is a mechanic and mentioned the car has a clear issue that makes it illegal to drive until it’s fixed. We had a check when we got in, and discovered the car is SORN and has been for several years. It has no valid MOT either. Now my issue is that this means it’s not insured either, and they regularly drive it. So, do I report? On one hand, I don’t want to dob them in just for the sake of it, especially since I’m not keen on them and that might effect my judgement. But on the other, they must know they shouldn’t be driving it. I’m worried if they hit my car/house then they obviously won’t be admitting it because they shouldn’t be driving. I’ve asked a few friends and everyone seems to have a different opinion so I’m asking random strangers for their judgement

YANBU- it shouldn’t be on the road, contact DVLA
YABU- give them a break and keep your nose out

I would report it

Akite · 13/04/2023 17:43

I'd report it too

MrsClatterbuck · 13/04/2023 17:44

Another one. Yes report it

Neededanewuserhandle · 13/04/2023 17:45

Good luck getting anyone to care - the drug dealer at the end of our street had no tax or MOT but the Police basically told me to fuck off when I reported it (just the motoring offences not the drug dealing - someone else reported him for that).
Also no Tax/MOT doesn't automatically mean no insurance.

EarthwormJane · 13/04/2023 17:45

Having no mot and/or no tax does not mean that it is uninsured

shadowchancesassy · 13/04/2023 17:45

I wouldn't report it because I wouldn't be checking someone else's car online so wouldn't be none the wiser 🤷🏻‍♀️ and evening knowing wouldn't change because I don't care what others do.

But it does mean that it is not road worthy and should not be driven or parked on the public highway.

Absolutely report them OP.

Even*

It does, in that they might be paying for insurance, but it would be invalidated by them not having tax/MOT.

I care though because I pay for my tax and MOT so why the fuck shouldn't they - it's also a potential safety issue for everyone.

Eggseggseverywhere · 13/04/2023 17:47

You can unsure such a car but it is illegal to actually drive it.

ThreeB · 13/04/2023 17:48

I'd report it via crime stoppers. It's illegal and if (heaven forbid) there was to be an accident then they wouldn't be covered as it's been declared SORN.

ZuckerwatterMaus · 13/04/2023 17:48

Lack of MOT will likely invalidate insurance . I would report , because of how I would feel if an unroadworthy car killed an innocent person .

Not having Tax and MOT doesn't automatically invalidate your insurance - and in fact it can't invalidate the RTA parts of it. This is an urban myth.

Some policies may have that as a clause, but most don't.

Check if they do have insurance here.

I'd report them simply because if having no MOT invalidates their insurance (though I'm guessing that their 'SORN for years' car doesn't have insurance anyway because if they're not paying for anything else why would they bother with insurance?) making a claim against them in the event of an accident would cost you most in the long run and you'd lose out a lot.

Plus it costs us all a fortune to keep our cars legal and safe. Why should they be able to get away with it?

Eggseggseverywhere · 13/04/2023 17:51

If it is illegally on the road moving the insurance won't pay out. Why would they?

MacAndCheeseyPlease · 13/04/2023 17:52

I thought the fact it was being driven while SORN would invalidate the insurance?

shadowchancesassy · 13/04/2023 17:54

@Neededanewuserhandle I do too. Having that mind set is a bit childish to me. Like kids arguing who got more of a bar of chocolate 🤦🏻‍♀️

bloodywhitecat · 13/04/2023 17:55

Can you insure an untaxed vehicle? If it has been SORN'ed for years then I don't see how it could be insured to be on the road.

MrsRickAstley · 13/04/2023 17:56

Oh yes. Report away.

Yes it does. It doesn't stop you taking out an insurance policy, but there will be there will be T&C's in the policy that a the vehicle must have valid tax and MOT. The policy would be invalid, and that is the offence complete.

HandbagsAtDawns · 13/04/2023 18:00

Report it

Aaron95 · 13/04/2023 18:02

No tax, no MOT. If it's being driven and is parked on the road then I would report it.

The above would invalidate insurance.
