Do we report this car?

Trying to be as neutral as possible here. Next door neighbours have a car that they park terribly. They regularly park across our drive, sometimes leave it in the middle of the road (when they can’t get parked outside their house) and totally block the street while unloading shopping/work stuff etc. They seem nice enough when I see them, but they’re inherently selfish with their actions- loud music, dogs barking all night etc. A friend visited last week who is a mechanic and mentioned the car has a clear issue that makes it illegal to drive until it’s fixed. We had a check when we got in, and discovered the car is SORN and has been for several years. It has no valid MOT either. Now my issue is that this means it’s not insured either, and they regularly drive it. So, do I report? On one hand, I don’t want to dob them in just for the sake of it, especially since I’m not keen on them and that might effect my judgement. But on the other, they must know they shouldn’t be driving it. I’m worried if they hit my car/house then they obviously won’t be admitting it because they shouldn’t be driving. I’ve asked a few friends and everyone seems to have a different opinion so I’m asking random strangers for their judgement

YANBU- it shouldn’t be on the road, contact DVLA
YABU- give them a break and keep your nose out

Report it but don't expect anything to happen.
My neighbour is driving around with no insurance, tax or MOT and has been for months. The police don't care.

Theoldwrinkley · 13/04/2023 19:20

Definitely report them. If they hit and kill or seriously injure a person.....a child....maybe you? It will be something you could have prevented.

DrunkOnLove · 13/04/2023 19:25

I wouldn’t hesitate to report them.

Shade17 · 13/04/2023 19:28

You can check if it’s insured or not. askMID.com

Not without committing a criminal offence you can’t.

Having no mot and/or no tax does not mean that it is uninsured

Not having a valid MOT certificate invalidates your car insurance.

JudgeRudy · 13/04/2023 19:32

I would have no issue reporting this. I'd feel justified because they are putting other people at risk. Also, this isn't someone making an honest mistake, this is a lifestyle choice.
From what you've shared these do not sound like the type of people that would respond well to adult discussion so this should address part of your problems.

If they really are parking it across your drive then yes I would. Just leaving it in road then no but parking across my drive I would see that as a piss take to be honest

Plaidparty · 13/04/2023 19:49

I’d report it and have done so in the past. If people don’t report these things, these types of people will just get away with it, and continue with their selfish behaviour.

LaylaLjungberg · 13/04/2023 19:50

100% report it and the DVLA will clamp it. It’s all fun and games until one of the divs smashes into someone. It’s not on.

UpUpUpU · 13/04/2023 19:51

I reported my neighbour last week through my council website. Loud car revving, fixing his friends cars im the middle of the road late at night. A PCSO went round to talk to him and then I got a written report via email. I’m sure it will make no difference but I feel better. I know I’m not the only one to have reported him too.
Do it!

IwantToDatePicard · 13/04/2023 19:56

I would report it. We have to pay tax and insurance, why can they have free motoring.

DanaScully53 · 13/04/2023 18:18

Another one here saying report it.

Agreed

ArentYouAshamed · 14/04/2023 14:22

The DVLA love an untaxed vehicle. It means a fortune in fines for the gov coffers. Every few months they do a town sweep here and get fine stickers and clamps on every untaxed car. It's actually quite shocking seeing at least one car on every street of the estates with a boot on. I never realised how common it was. And a week or so later it's the tow truck lifting them up and taking them away and an angry woman or hard man type fella swearing at the driver.

GladAllOver · 14/04/2023 14:27

Arguments about insurance are irrelevant. It's an unroadworthy vehicle being driven on the roads.
Just get on and report it. Today!

refreshingseahorse · 14/04/2023 14:57

A car down our road had a big yellow clamp and stickers saying 'untaxed' appear one day. The owners tried to remove the clamp but could not. It got towed away a couple of weeks later.
Report it and fully enjoy any stickers / clamps / drama that ensues.

BlackberrySky · 14/04/2023 15:09

I tend to report cars whose drivers draw attention to themselves by driving/parking like an arsehole, usually repeatedly. I wouldn't notice if a car had no tax/MOT etc if it was being driven/parked considerately but these people can't seem to help also being anti social. They deserve to be reported. Do it!

LilyAndTheKing · 14/04/2023 15:29

Our antisocial dreadful parker of a neighbour drove a car that was untaxed, no mot or insurance.
I reported the vehicle on more than one occasion, nothing whatsoever was done about it. After a year or so they got a newer car, I haven't checked this one because they've become much more considerate.

In the meantime, my daughter forgot to tax her car (it has mot and insurance) and was fined after 14 days. Her fault, she'd recently moved and hadn't yet updated her address so didn't get the reminder.

JauntyJinty · 14/04/2023 15:47

Technically driving without an MOT doesn't automatically invalidate your insurance, but the companise can put a clause in the small print so that it will. What insurance company won't put something so obvious in their small print to avoid paying out?!

Neededanewuserhandle · 13/04/2023 17:45

Good luck getting anyone to care - the drug dealer at the end of our street had no tax or MOT but the Police basically told me to fuck off when I reported it (just the motoring offences not the drug dealing - someone else reported him for that).
Also no Tax/MOT doesn't automatically mean no insurance.

Yes it does. Insurance is invalid if the car is being driven illegally, and no mot means it's not legal to be driven.

torquewench · 14/04/2023 16:47

Report it. There's a CF at the end of my road who treats the T junction as his personal scrapyard. 3 of his untaxed unMOTd crappy transit vans have been moved after being reported.

Shade17 · 14/04/2023 17:07

Yes it does. Insurance is invalid if the car is being driven illegally, and no mot means it's not legal to be driven.

As PPs have said, that is not necessarily the case. It very much depends on the individual insurer’s policy wording.

JoWawa · 14/04/2023 17:10

Which actually means that their insurance is invalid.

Nailsandthesea · 14/04/2023 17:15

ThreeB · 13/04/2023 17:48

I'd report it via crime stoppers. It's illegal and if (heaven forbid) there was to be an accident then they wouldn't be covered as it's been declared SORN.
