AIBU to try? Eczema and Homeopathy

Hello everyone,

I need some advice about Eczema and Homeopathy. My eldest son is 13 and has Eczema and mild Acne and THEN chickenpox. We went to our local
GP as my son had concerns about his acne and chickenpox scarring. The GP was not worried and said it would fade Confused. I told the GP that my son is mixed race and his hyperpigmentation from his scars would not just fade without treatment but I was advised to go private.

Anywhoo, I saw a private dermatologist who was amazing and prescribed my son on Antibiotics and a mild retinol for his acne. However, she had concerns about my son's eczema and the above treatments will aggravate his skin without the Eczema being treatment. She recommended a mild steroid cream but we rejected this as a few years ago and multiple testing we have found that the high potent steroids were causing my son to have pre-diabetes.

So the dermatologist recommended should use a Mike steroid or be put onto non steroid tablets such as methotrexate or ciclosporin. I'm not sure what to do? Would it be silly if I go down the homeopathy route? The Dr told me that the longer eczema stays in the body, the more inflammation my son will have.

as over the years, we saw an Endcodrinolog

YABU to consider homeopathy as its made of nothing.

It sounds like you had very considered and personalised advice from the dermatologist, a highly trained skin expert - why would you not listen to this?

Nimbostratus100 · 13/04/2023 15:42

yes -you would be very silly to go down the homeopathy route. It is just a total con with no scientific basis what so ever and all evidence is that it doesn't work. Why would you do that to your son?

TheGrimSqueakersFlea · 13/04/2023 15:44

Try it, I've had eczema all my life and nothing has got rid of it. You might find something that soothes it rather than clearing it but soothing is better than sore

Whaeanui · 13/04/2023 15:45

You’re going to get flamed for trying anything the doctor hasn’t given you but I’ve had a lifetime of eczema and psoriasis, my sister had painful horrendous eczema as a child and none of that shit works permanently. I didn’t try homeopathy, but have found solutions that work that aren’t a prescription from the doctor. Diet more than anything.

The oral tablet forms have horrible side effects- plus the steroid creams gave my son pre-diabetes. Why would I want for him to have more health problems than he already has?

People that haven’t experienced it won’t understand!

Cheesedoffandgrumpy · 13/04/2023 15:59

Do a little research on an antinflammatory diet, it might help.

I got a herbology (?) cream that was very soothing. The only thing that would clear it was steroid cream and that's v short term. But the non medical cream was soothing, didn't sting and can be used as often as you want. Dr Clare Hepothethary if you want to have a look.

*Hepothecary

Homeopathy is just a nonsense. So YABU if you're considering it instead of medicine. If you just want some very expensive water, knock yourself out

Thank you. I will look this up.

I'll see can i find her site and will link to you

Makewayforsummer · 13/04/2023 16:11

Yes you would be. The research is very clear that it doesn’t work.

Whaeanui · 13/04/2023 16:11

I second looking up anti inflammatory diet, also gut health type stuff as skin disorders can indicate a problem with gut health.

Second this too, my mam used to suffer horribly from certain types of foods, read a book called 'Eat right for your blood group' and saw a huge improvement.

SunnySaturdayMorning · 13/04/2023 16:14

Of course YABU. Homeopathy doesn’t work.

Chickenkeev · 13/04/2023 16:14

Dr Clare sounds a bit woo but speaking as someone who has benefited from her skin cream, i wouldn't dismiss it out of hand.

secular39 · 13/04/2023 16:19

Thank you all very much.

For the PP's who are criticising my choice to try homeopathy. My son was blood pricked, investigated to the bone, numerous testing to find out what was causing his pre-diabetes, it was due to steroids. Since removing steroids from his system, he is no longer pre-diabetic and no longer has flare ups.

Pestispeeved · 13/04/2023 16:19

Has anyone bothered to test your DS for Coeliac disease? It is a simple blood test and he must be eating bread etc before the test.

If steroid creams are giving him pre-diabetes, he must have a natural predisposition to it. Check out diets that help reverse diabetes. Actually ask you GP to refer him to a dietician, they can help a lot.

Remember there are a lot of snake oil merchants out there.

whatalovelydayontheintergoodlord · 13/04/2023 16:21

Have you tried protopic cream?

Excited101 · 13/04/2023 16:27

There seems to be some confusion between homeopathy and non medical treatments, the 2 are very different. Herbal remedies, dietary choices, exercising etc can all be very effective but they are nothing to do with homeopathy.

Homeopathy is based on the principle that water ‘remembers’ what it had in it once. so once it’s been so heavily diluted, it’s still just as effective because the water has ‘remembered’.

on the basis that water remembers about as much as me when I reach the top of the stairs… I’d probably be looking down the routes of straight and more alternative medicine. Not homeopathy.

exactly, water comes into contact with thousands of solutes, and contains many. How is it supposed to know which one to "remember"! water does not know or remember anything

Luredbyapomegranate · 13/04/2023 16:31

Options..

Pro topic is an alternative prescribed eczema treatment.

Re diabetes - can you offset the steroid by reducing the sugar in his diet?? (I don’t know but other people must have had the same problem so worth asking.)

Also worth trying anti-inflammatory diet, it does appear to help some people.

Some people have success with various herbal anti-inflammation creams (I didn’t)

whatever you do, moisturise twice a day, it makes the biggest difference with eczema

Homeopathy doesn’t work - it’s not just that’s it’s unproven, it’s that it’s scientifically impossible.
