Inspired by another thread, some of the posts were interesting.

AIBU to think that, in this day and age, a washing machine is more useful than a dishwasher in day-to-day life?

YABU - I’d rather have a dishwasher
YANBU - hell no, I need my washing machine

In my first home I bought a worktop sized dishwasher and went to the launderette. I hate washing up.

MacarenaMacarena · 13/04/2023 01:05

Washing machine for me!

Georgeandzippyzoo · 13/04/2023 01:07

Most def washing machine!

Schnooze · 13/04/2023 01:08

Washing machine.

Tanfastic · 13/04/2023 01:10

Washing machine. I've never owned a dishwasher and never will. Never felt the need.

pookiedoodlepuppy · 13/04/2023 01:13

God no you could never take the dishwasher from me . I would throw everyone's clothes in the bath and jump on them .

tobee · 13/04/2023 01:19

Dishwasher no question

Furries · 13/04/2023 01:25

An obvious omission from my OP - you are not able to use the services of a launderette or friends/family.

Washing machine. I'm not scrubbing underwear.

MavisMcMinty · 13/04/2023 01:45

I’ve never had a dishwasher in my 60 years. There’s no room for one in my kitchen, and would probably not be possible to plumb it in anyway, in this ridiculous ancient cob’n’thatch cottage. I’d like to have one, but can’t really miss what I’ve never had. I’d have to drive a 26-mile round trip to the nearest launderette, so I’ll stick with my washing machine!

Catsmere · 13/04/2023 02:16

YANBU

With just two humans and two cats, no cookware to wash (our hot meals are made for us and we reheat them) and minimal washing up, I couldn’t justify having a dishwasher even if I had space for it. I have access to a communal laundry, and that’s a full load, sometimes two, every week. A washing machine - my own or not - is an essential item, but I have never wanted a dishwasher.

pishkashante · 13/04/2023 02:19

Washing machine for me.

I cook a lot of different types of food and veg each day for my diet, so often need to wash and re-use pans and utensils quickly.

Waiting for the dishwasher to finish a cycle would give me the rage.

GoodChat · 13/04/2023 02:35

Oh I definitely need to keep my washing machine please.

SunshineAndFizz · 13/04/2023 03:55

It's 2023 not 1923. Who on Earth would choose to hand wash all clothes instead of having a washing machine?

BoycottBudLight · 13/04/2023 03:59

It’s like choosing a favourite child.

Nope, can’t choose. I need both. 🤣

AnuSTart · 13/04/2023 04:11

Washing machine. I went without for a fortnight once and that is something I do NOT want to repeat.

FrozenGhost · 13/04/2023 04:11

I like having both but the more useful one is obviously washing machine. Proven by the fact that many people don't have a dishwasher, even if they might like one. But basically everyone has a washing machine or uses one eg at a laundromat.

Lincslady53 · 13/04/2023 06:13

I would say that a washing machine is essential, a dishwasher a luxury. Just 2 adults in our household now, the WM is used twice a week, the DW twice a month, if that. We wash plates etc as we go. We find to use the DW efficiently it has to be used as a store for dirty stuff for 2 or 3 days before it is full and we hate the smell. Don't mind handwashing. Do most utensils as we have finished with them, plates and crockery whilst waiting for the kettle to boil. Use the dishwasher if we have guests or cook something like a roast with lots of greasy pans, but otherwise happy with the sink.

WashAsDelicates · 13/04/2023 06:43

Washing machine, definitely.

Hand washing dishes is not physically demanding. Carrying laundry to a laundrette - if there even is one near you - takes time and effort. Just imagine having to hand wash jeans, towels, bedding!

I'm keeping my washing machine.

TeenDivided · 13/04/2023 06:46

Washing machine.

We don't have a dishwasher.
Washing dishes can often be done whilst in the kitchen keeping an eye on the hob, and the rest for us takes less than 10 minutes.

Clarinet1 · 13/04/2023 07:23

In my previous flat I had both. Now I live in a block with communal laundry facilities but have a dishwasher in the flat which I regarded as essential when I was looking for somewhere as I just find it makes life so much easier. I thought about putting in my own washing machine but in the end I didn’t. If I’d had a trek to a launderette I probably would though.

PussBilledDuckyPlait · 13/04/2023 07:26

I have a washing machine but not a dishwasher and certainly wouldn't want this the other way round.

Aprilx · 13/04/2023 07:56

Furries · 13/04/2023 01:25

An obvious omission from my OP - you are not able to use the services of a launderette or friends/family.

Well then it is a really dumb question. Are you really asking if, in 2023, people would go back to washing clothes in a bucket or with a mangle or whatever rather than give up their dish washer? The choice surely has to be laundrette and dishwasher vs washing machine and washing pots by hand.

pictoosh · 13/04/2023 08:01

There's no comparison. Hand washing clothes, bedding, towels is an absolute toil. Hand washing dishes is a pain but that's all it is.
