When you put on weight, did/do you notice?

Apologies, I know weight threads can be a bit of a bun fight, but I need to know if others have had the same experience as me!

Up until around 2019 I was always the same healthy weight, around 9.5st. A bit of fluctuation but never less than 9st 3 and never more than 9st 10.

Then I changed jobs and started WFH, and I also started dating and we'd eat out/have takeaways 3-4 times a week.

In all that time I thought I'd put on "a few lbs" but didn't think anything of it. I bought clothes in my normal size and thought I filled jeans a bit more but no overhang or squeezing into them.

Then covid happened and I moved in with DM for company during lockdowns. She has scales and I don't, and I got the biggest shock when I saw they said 11st 2!

I overhauled my diet and got much more active, lost the weight and kept it off for months. But what I'm confused about is I still don't think I looked or felt 2st heavier than I am now (9st exactly). The scary bit is the measurements. I've lost 7 inches from my hips, 6 inches from my waist and 3 from my boobs. I put the tape measure round me the other day to check I was ordering the right size for something and "put" the 7 inches back on to compare.

It's not huge or anything, but if you measured yourself and put 7 inches on and said "I was this size but didn't know it had happened" people would think its nuts right? How could I not know?

Like those threads where the OP says x has put on weight, shall I say anything and the overwhelming response is "they already know". I really really didn't. and no, never say anything, it's rude as fuck

Well it was 1.5st gain, and I've now lost 2st2, lighter than when I started. I can still wear the jeans from when I was bigger, but the arse is a bit saggy and I prefer a size smaller now - it wasn't when I was half a stone heavier at my "normal" weight of 9st7 ish.

Im a bit confused about the point of your update. What I’m saying is that of course you’ll notice - you may fit into some clothes still when you up 1 stone bit not into all and your clothes will fit differently.
I remember myself at 58 kg and now I’m 66 kg - it’s very different. And you went up even bigger - 70 kg. I’m genuinely surprised that you didn’t notice how much you’ve gained.

Trickedbyadoughnut · 13/04/2023 12:44

I've been the same, OP. I know I put on weight all over, so often my clothes take ages not to fit. But I've yo-yo-ed for years now so I am aware of it.

I have a horse and was not riding her last year as I was too heavy for her and absolutely everyone at the stables were telling me I was being silly and to get on with it. My instructor only stopped banging on about it when I told her how much I weighed and even then she said she found it really hard to believe. So it's also other people too.

I mean, it's all in the OP. I thought I'd put on a few lbs, but not that I was over 11st. And the point of my OP is that I can't believe my arse was 7 inches bigger and my waist 6 inches bigger and I didn't notice, and still can't get around the size difference.

Trust me, Im as astonished as you that I didn't notice, it's literally the reason why I made the thread Grin

I used to be the type of person who could eat whatever I liked but since my mid thirties that changed. My weight went up but I paid no attention. Then one day I couldn't get in my jeans. I stood on the scales and realised I need to loose weight. It's hard changing habits though.

Tafaa · 13/04/2023 13:19

I had a similar shock! Always been around 9 st and was aware that I'd put a few pounds on but couldn't believe it when I stepped on the scales and it said 11st 5! However when I did then look back at old photos of myself I could totally tell. I realised I hadn't really had a good look at myself recently and when I finally did I could definitely see the difference! I just hadn't noticed the gradual increase.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 13/04/2023 13:20

I put on quite a bit and didn't realise until I saw a picture of myself on our annual work rounders match. I had gym leggings and t shirt on and just looked huge. I've lost a stone now but still think I look huge but it does seem to creep up

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 13/04/2023 13:21

And I realised I was obese and didn't think I looked obese which is worrying

pizzaHeart · 13/04/2023 14:55

@PsychoHotSauce I’m glad that you’ve taken my post correctly, it wasn’t mean or anything, I’m the same heights and the figures I went through are similar, that why I’ve posted. I have back problem myself so every 2 kg make a big difference for me.
Amazed how much you’ve lost by the way.

Babsexxx · 13/04/2023 14:58

I’m exactly the same weight and exactly the same thing happened to me bmi was 29 never been that heavy in my life took 3 months to get back to 9.7 from 11.4 I genuinely didn’t notice! lol! I’m far more cautious with food but I’m pregnant so the cravings are really overtaking my will power at the minute but the way I see it is if I did it in 12 weeks before il do it again!

JMSA · 13/04/2023 15:00

Yup, because with my fucked up attitude to food, it's never going to be just a couple of lbs that I put on.

xogossipgirlxo · 13/04/2023 15:05

I start noticing after approx. 8 pounds. Stretchy or oversize clothes don't help. This is why I weigh myself regularly. I don't believe in intuitive eating or throwing away your scale etc. The only living being that I know and eats intuitively is my cat- he can have his favourite treat in front of him and won't eat it if he doesn't feel like it. Once he put on weight and then just ate less and lost it. Other cat is like humans- likes to overindulge 😆

Createausername1970 · 13/04/2023 15:13

Oh yes - I blame elasticated waists and other stretchy modern clothes. I went from about 9.5 stone to 13 stone over the course of a few years, but didn't own a pair of scales so although I knew I was heavier, I didn't realise just how much it was. If I wore the more tailored stuff of previous generations, with buttons and zips, I think I would have spotted it sooner.

Then an older relative had issues to do with long-term diet and weight (visceral fat mainly) so we bought a set of smart scales - they tell you about your visceral fat, BMI, etc - and we both nearly died of shock. I could see hubby had got a bit heavy, and vice-versa, but neither of us thought it was a bad as it was. It was the visceral fat reading that worried us the most.

I shifted about 2.5 stone last year. but haven't weighed my self since beginning of December, and when I did weigh myself last week I have put 10lb back on, but again I wasn't really aware of it. So back on the diet again....

I have made a mental note to weigh myself at least weekly in future.

SybilWrites · 13/04/2023 15:15

I notice after about 2kg as my clothes start feeling snug. I mostly wear jeans so can tell very quickly on the waist band and things. . I can also see it in my face (I'm at the face vs body stage of life) and everywhere else to be honest - my stomach is the first place to start gaining.

I can't see how people wouldn't know if they put on 2 stone!

GoodnightJude1 · 13/04/2023 15:21

I’m 5’10 and my ‘comfortable’ weight is what I am now (11st 7lb) I can go up to around 12st without noticing but once I go over I feel sluggish and uncomfortable.

QueenBee1234 · 13/04/2023 15:28

I am 5'10 and have both gained and lost a stone and no one noticed. I think sometimes it depends how it is distributed on the body.
I weigh much more than most people would guess (nurses usually underestimate how much I weigh by around 2 stone!) so I am grateful for that at least!

RubbishHusband · 15/04/2023 10:37

To be honest I think that actually there's really not a lot of difference between gaining half a stone or so. Weight goes on slowly so you put on a few pounds here, few pounds there and that's why you don't notice. It takes quite a lot of weight to notice a significant change, and to have any realy affect on your body.

And actually if you don't notice does it really matter? By 1.5st sure then clothes are starting to get tight but actually up to a St or so, if I've not noticed and I don't feel different then it's a bit irrelevent

I don't believe people who say they can tell 2-3lbs, weight fluctuates by that naturally with water retention etc. I gain 8lbs of water weight during my period!

Singinghollybob · 15/04/2023 10:45

Yes I've always noticed, whether that's in the shape of my body and/or how my clothes fit. I then make the decision to rein things in a bit to get back to my normal.

Singinghollybob · 15/04/2023 10:46

I'm a small build so I think it's quite noticeable on me, even a few lbs.

Fuerza · 15/04/2023 14:13

Tangent, but how can a scales tell you your visceral fat? Even a very fancy scales. How does it work @Createausername1970 ? Is it gauging your visceral fat on a likelihood given your heigh and weight, or is it scanning your internal organs ?

When you stand on the scales you have to be barefoot and stand on a specific area. Apparently it sends electrical impulses, but you don't feel anything. It calculates the info based on the time it takes to receive the info back. The longer the impulse takes to wade through your fat, the more you have, basically. The scales themselves only display weight, the rest of the information is accessible through an app. The scales sends the info to my phone via Bluetooth. The scales are made by Renpho and were about £30 on Amazon. I was a bit sceptical, but I have read various reviews and they always come out well. They are not going to be as accurate as getting it done in a hospital using their mega-expensive equipment - but that isn't even an option for most of us. But for £30, it's a great alternative.

Other makes and models of smart scales are available at other retailers, on-line or in store. I am not plugging these in particular.
