When you put on weight, did/do you notice?

Apologies, I know weight threads can be a bit of a bun fight, but I need to know if others have had the same experience as me!

Up until around 2019 I was always the same healthy weight, around 9.5st. A bit of fluctuation but never less than 9st 3 and never more than 9st 10.

Then I changed jobs and started WFH, and I also started dating and we'd eat out/have takeaways 3-4 times a week.

In all that time I thought I'd put on "a few lbs" but didn't think anything of it. I bought clothes in my normal size and thought I filled jeans a bit more but no overhang or squeezing into them.

Then covid happened and I moved in with DM for company during lockdowns. She has scales and I don't, and I got the biggest shock when I saw they said 11st 2!

I overhauled my diet and got much more active, lost the weight and kept it off for months. But what I'm confused about is I still don't think I looked or felt 2st heavier than I am now (9st exactly). The scary bit is the measurements. I've lost 7 inches from my hips, 6 inches from my waist and 3 from my boobs. I put the tape measure round me the other day to check I was ordering the right size for something and "put" the 7 inches back on to compare.

It's not huge or anything, but if you measured yourself and put 7 inches on and said "I was this size but didn't know it had happened" people would think its nuts right? How could I not know?

Like those threads where the OP says x has put on weight, shall I say anything and the overwhelming response is "they already know". I really really didn't. and no, never say anything, it's rude as fuck

I put on about 4 stone over about 15 years after having DC and noticed clothes not fitting but it was so gradual and I could still do 5K runs more or less so I didn’t really think about it. Then we went on holiday and hiked up a mountain, and I couldn’t keep up with the DC (teenagers by then) and that’s when I realised I was proper overweight and unfit. Stayed like that for a few years until last summer when I started making an effort to lose it!

Kudja · 13/04/2023 08:04

I did the same. I have now lost the weight (or most of it) and I do feel so much better, but I never noticed it going on (knew I’d put on a bit but had no idea quite how much!). I’m still wearing the same clothes though (even after 1.5-2st weight loss). They do look better now though 😂

OhSmitty · 13/04/2023 08:06

I put a stone on when we moved into DMs house for 5months. My scales were packed away, small house = fewer steps, I drank more and had bigger portions. Being temporarily homeless was unbelievably stressful for me, living with DM wasn't easy.

I was overweight to start with but really shocked I'd put on that much. I'm 2st heavier than at the start of lockdown and I'm working to get it shifted.

@Fuerza pah, intuitive eating + my labrador like compulsion to eat everything was never going to end well Grin

I really struggle with this - I think it's because I didn't have to watch my weight for years, then I had a big life event and have struggled ever since. I sort of 'feel' slim and it's only when I weight myself or my jeans don't fit that I realise I am not effortlessly slim any more Confused

whatyoulookingfor · 13/04/2023 08:09

Fuerza · 13/04/2023 07:54

I have a very similar story. My normal if not watching my weight at all was 9 stone 5lb to 9 stone 7lbs.
Then at the end of last year, 29th Dec I stepped on scales and discovered I was 10 stone 11.
I was shocked.
Still trying to reach 10 stone.
9 stone?
Ever?
Well I'll just keep going, keep doing my best. Never taking my eye off the ball like that again

Intuitive eating is what I told myself I was doing 🤣

Omg this is me. I'm normally the same weight as you were and am now 10st 10lb. I got married in October and was 9st 5lb then which is my normal weight. I've no idea how I put on so much and now cannot seem to lose it.

whosaidtha · 13/04/2023 08:15

I started losing weight after my last baby was born last year. I took progress pictures each month and despite losing 3stone in 6months I honestly couldn't see any difference. I suppose it depends on weight distribution. I'm 4stone down now and can deffo see the difference. Got 1 more stone to go.

Ancientwater · 13/04/2023 08:25

Did you wear more comfy clothes in lockdown? I think elasticated waists had a lot of people fooled. I wear stretchy leggings at home as much more comfy. In lockdown I wore them loads.

The best thing to do is have a pair of unforgiving non stretchy jeans and wear them every few months. I did this by accident as have a fave pair that have been around for about 17 years, they always tell the truth.

DogsDryWineAndCheese · 13/04/2023 08:33

I’ve put about 3 stone on. I feel like a whale. It’s stopping me wanting to see a people who’ve known me a while etc as I’m so ashamed. I feel every pound 😞
But I’m under constant stress so getting it off is hard for me. I’ll manage a week of being mega active and carpet counting (sometimes lose a pound and sometimes even gain one or two (!)) and then give up.

megletthesecond · 13/04/2023 08:37

Yes. My jeans and smart trousers get tight. I know once 2/3lbs have gone on and increase my activity / reduce crisp intake accordingly. I do weigh myself every so often. I'm slim though so I think it's easier to notice when the weight goes on.

lljkk · 13/04/2023 08:41

I don't wear rings now, but when I did... I could tell my weight fluctuations by which finger which ring fit on.

Sparrow80 · 13/04/2023 09:25

Same here - I didn’t really notice 3 stone 😵‍💫 My clothes still fit just a bit tighter 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’ve now lost 3 stone and can’t see that either. In fact now I’m more aware of healthy eating and being active I feel more overweight than when I was three stone heavier 😵‍💫 I have half a stone to go until a healthy bmi. I’m very muscular and active but that doesn’t explain 3 .

WhatDoesMyFutureHold · 13/04/2023 09:39

Ahhhh my people! 🙌🏻

Quite similar to you @PsychoHotSauce

I was always just under 9 stone, at 5 foot 6. Very slender but I suited it, small frame, small boobs. Never had to make much effort.

Then after pregnancy, and 2 children who didn't sleep meaning I've survived on sugar, I'm now 10 stone 13 - the heaviest I've ever been!

I've gone up one dress size (getting a bit snug now though) but I honestly look at old pictures of myself and think I don't look much different. Then look at recent holiday photos and see the reality...

Buildingthefuture · 13/04/2023 09:51

Yes I feel every pound!! My weight only fluctuates by half a stone, but when I’m at the top end (like now!) I feel like a massive lard arse. It’s ridiculous, because objectively I know I’m not (I’m a uk size 10 and quite tall) but, as I get older, those extra 7 pounds stick to me like shit to a blanket and are soooooo hard to shift!

KohlaParasaurus · 13/04/2023 09:51

My frame and my clothes can suck up around half a stone, but after that I start to feel as if my own skin doesn't fit me properly.

SherbertDabs · 13/04/2023 09:54

I started wfh early 2019 and gained almost a stone, then gained 2 more during lockdown. I started wearing loungy clothes, stopped walking anywhere and stopped looking in the mirror. Realistically, I knew I was gaining but was in denial and didn't realise how bad it was. I'm now struggling to lose it and really struggling with going out/meeting up with people again because of my weight.

Fifiellz · 13/04/2023 09:56

After children I settled at about 10 stone 7 which is in the middle of a normal BMI and although I always wanted to lose a bit, looking back at pictures I was slim and healthy at that weight.

Over the last years I have been between 11.7 and currently 12.2. I didn't see it go on and now i'm peri it's almost impossible to get my mindset in a place I can get it off. Annoyingly I start every day motivated to make changes and every evening in a bucket of wine and crisps.

I think the way your weight is distributed makes a huge difference - some people carry extra weight really well. All mine is on my belly and back and face - tiny piggy eyes and no jawline. I'm all bulging fat over bra straps and waistbands which is not a good look.

Easterfunbun · 13/04/2023 09:58

I always know but I’m very tall with quite a wide frame. I also gain evenly so that it’s all distributed well. I can actually carry weight very well, and it’s usually a few stone either way before people notice. I’ve always felt fat though even when I haven’t been. I’m working on that.

evangron · 13/04/2023 10:04

I was once 11 stone 6lb which is just unthinkable now when I do the numbers to see how much I've lost

In fact, I lost the weight and after, when I was pregnant with an 8lb 5oz baby, I was 10 stone at 41w

I think I looked alright at the top weight even though I probably didn't; given I am 5ft 1

Now I'm 8 stone and I don't really feel any different

People keep asking me if I'm ok Hmm

pizzaHeart · 13/04/2023 10:19

I’m very surprised as 2 stones gain will put you in a very different size range. How did you not notice with your clothes? I’ve gained less than 1 stone and my jeans went from 10 to 12 straight away. I was 9st 18 years ago now I’m 10st 6lb. I’m the same height as you. It’s a huge difference in sizes, even tights don’t fit the same.
And I don’t wear slim fit by the way, I always buy looser clothes.

PhoenixReincarnated · 13/04/2023 10:55

coloursquare · 12/04/2023 21:19

I do, but I think I go into denial and most clothes nowadays are stretchy. How tall
are you?

This is me. I know I'm putting weight on but I fool myself into believing it's only a few pounds. Most of my weight goes on my stomach so I wear loose tops/t-shirts and jumpers that disguise it.

I wear size 14 jeans at 13st and I still wore size 14 jeans at my lowest of 11st 3lb. Admittedly I was getting to the stage of needing to go down to a 12 but they weren't massive on me. Nor were they too tight at the top end of the scale.

Allmyfavouritepeople · 13/04/2023 11:15

Yes this is me. Put on nearly 3 stone and had no idea. Body shaped stayed exactly the same just wider and I went up one clothes size but that happens at times of the month anyway.

I can see it in pictures but can't see it in the mirror. Lost a stone but just weighed myself thanks to this thread and put half back on. Weirdly I can feel this half a stone more than the 3! Back to c25k for me.

junebirthdaygirl · 13/04/2023 11:41

I find when l lose weight l feel great after losing about 3 pounds..lighter and this leads me to think l am now skinny and don't have to worry..bad thinking!!.
I suppose like you not noticing how much you gained some people don't see how much they've lost and keep going until just unhealthy.

Well it was 1.5st gain, and I've now lost 2st2, lighter than when I started. I can still wear the jeans from when I was bigger, but the arse is a bit saggy and I prefer a size smaller now - it wasn't when I was half a stone heavier at my "normal" weight of 9st7 ish.
