What jobs pay some 80k - 100k+

Posting here for traffic. Also, I’m on decent salary and don’t intend to retrain.

However, on a different thread (people discussing a different topic; the new free childcare hours introduced by the government) some people said they were earning salaries in the above ranges and were able to increase or reduce their hours without any impact on promotion opportunities etc.

I’m interested what the jobs are. Loooooong way away, and things will likely change by then but I’m thinking if I was to provide options to my DCs in the future…. Of course it will be down to them and if they end up being in low paid jobs nothing wrong with that…

IT Director roles are £100k and above. Senior IT engineers and architects can be on over £85k (just). InfoSec can also command wages in this area if they are well qualified. Programme managers can maybe make this much.

Prettypaisleyslippers · 12/04/2023 13:38

IT sales pays well for people with a good positive attitude and an interest in tech. Good basic plus commission, normally double salary OTE

JaneFondue · 12/04/2023 13:38

Generally I find well paid jobs aren't very flexible with hours, but I am waiting to see if I am wrong.

I’m a digital project manager. I earn £35k in London.

I don’t know anyone that earns £100k doing my job.

It's a broad term to be fair. Like some Marketing Managers will earn £25k (yes even in London) and some £80k.

The question isn’t what jobs come with high salary, but what jobs come with high salary and hours can be changed at will without impacting future prospects.

Ignore my previous answer.

Very, very few would be my guess. Most high paying jobs = hard work and longish hours.

Cyber security management/head-of roles pay well at the moment, as there is a shortage of senior level candidates. I'm a head-of and earn over £100k (I'm in the north of England). I think this will have changed by the time our kids are jobhunting though, as there are lots of young/junior cyber security specialists and they will naturally progress and develop.

MyMachineAndMe · 12/04/2023 13:40

The sparkies, plumbers and gas engineers I know all seem to earn a fortune.

Quite often that only comes a decade or two after people have put in all the long hours/high stress. You've got to get through the hard, early years first.

Or when people are self employed. People like dentists can probably choose to work 3 or 4 days a week and will earn that amount in private practice once they are experienced and have their own successful practice in an affluent area or if they establish themselves in cosmetic work.

RedPandaFluff · 12/04/2023 13:41

Sorry - to answer the other question that's been asked, my job in cyber security is very flexible and has an excellent culture in terms of work-life balance.

AffIt · 12/04/2023 13:41

I work in IT, specifically information systems management. I'm a Microsoft MVP and work at director level in fintech consultancy. I have 15+ years of experience and my salary (including bonus) is ~£100k +.

Well-paying tech roles include IS / IT systems and infrastructure management (with the obvious element of experience required), consultancy, infosec, data traffic architecture design and management, software engineering, high-level PM roles etc.

Lower-paid roles (although still within the £40-60k region) would be entry level coding / scripting, app dev roles, project admin (Agile / Scrum), db development and management, product testing, QA etc.

ringoutsolsticebells · 12/04/2023 13:42

Husband works for a leasing division in a UK bank. Earns approx £125. Decent hours too. He's not a salesman but does have to bring in about 3 mill in business each year

WhatEasterEgg · 12/04/2023 13:43

I work in a niche branch of marketing and earn £80k FTE. I've only worked 3-4 days per week since having DC though so take home much less. My next job I'll be looking for close to 6 figures FTE. But I'd say that having a high paid job where there's no impact for working part time is a myth, I've definitely taken longer to reach my level and I've had to fight a lot to get here and explain countless times to men why they're being discriminatory when they eye roll because I have to leave to pick up a sick child or can't go to a night time event as my kids need to see me. That's a whole other story though! In general marketing pays well and is reasonably flexible.

PickledPurplePickle · 12/04/2023 13:43

I run an accountancy firm part time

My OH is a senior software engineer

We both earn over this (this is not a brag but you asked)

Exactly, that’s what my experience is. Maybe I need to go back to that post where a few people mentioned they had a job like that and see if they can share what the actual job is 😁. Maybe PM… essentially a bit of stalking 😇. I’m really intrigued, though.

Place marking, one of my DC needs ideas for jobs.

somuchtolearnabout · 12/04/2023 13:45

Without outing myself too much, DH earns 7 figures and works in healthcare recruitment. He is v.high up and owns his own businesses now, but when he first started almost 20 years ago he was earning pennies, but was then making 6 figures by his late 20s.

It's a very stressful job and one of those things that you a) have to persevere with and b) be good at. It's highly commission based so if you're not good at it, you just won't earn much money. But if you are good at it, you can make a lot of money.

RedPandaFluff · 12/04/2023 13:45

I think the organisation is a factor when it comes to flexibility, as well as job role. Companies can vary hugely in culture and attitudes towards employee working practices, so two identical roles in two different organisations may have completely different working practices. It can even differ from line manager to line manager, where there is discretion.

WellPaidJobs · 12/04/2023 13:32

Yes, including my salary (on the lower end of that range) but I couldn’t just simply reduce my hours and then increase at will without impacting my future earnings potential.

If people only read the thread properly, my post isn’t even that long.

The question isn’t what jobs come with high salary, but what jobs come with high salary and hours can be changed at will without impacting future prospects.

What do you mean by "at will"? Do you mean you choose each week when and how much to work? You'll only get that by contracting or being self-employed with your own business.

If you mean you can agree to cut down hours with your employer for a time or change your working patterns or have flexi-time (e.g. for a few years after having children) then this is possible in many finance roles, and to increase again afterwards. But of course working less in any role will generally make career progression slower unless you happen to be lucky.

This.

My hours aren't bad now - pretty much 40-50 hours, more or less always WfH with a bit of international travel, but it has taken me over a decade to get to where I am: I've already put in the hard yards of 70+ hours in my 20s and early 30s.

I can't really of think of any very high-paying role with 'normal' hours / stress level that you can walk into.

Network engineer, platform engineer, senior project manager, programmer (I've known Business Object Programmers be on over £1000 a month and that was years ago). Those sorts of roles.

Nepmarthiturn · 12/04/2023 13:46

And yes I did read the thread thank you, but it was not clear what exactly you mean.

Ginmonkeyagain · 12/04/2023 13:48

Mid to high level public sector managers.

Economic regulators pay that sort of salary for middle management types.
