To think maternity clothes don’t fit

Could well be me being awkward, but I’ve spent a fortune on maternity clothes and they just don’t seem to fit. I’ve spent the day hitching up my over the bump jeans, which just keep falling down and taking my knickers with them, meaning I’m constantly in danger of displaying my bum.

Tops are marginally better but the two pretty ones I bought don’t fit over my boobs (which aren’t massive - I mean, I’m a D so god knows how bigger chested women fare.

I have about three vest tops that fit and a couple of pairs of massive leggings. That’s it.

I’m fed up, uncomfortable and feel very ugly. Help.

You might be a big small for them yet ?

Greenorred · 10/04/2023 19:04

I’m six months Sad and my other clothes definitely don’t fit!

I struggled a bit with trousers but found tops and dresses ok. I lived in leggings (yuck!), jumpers and dresses. Only a D/DD and size 8 and found them ok - which brand have you gone for OP?

AHelpfulHand · 10/04/2023 19:05

The problem with maternity clothing is they generally dont fit until around 4-5 months pregnant, and even then i found the over the bump jeans a nuisance.

i stuck to over the bump leggings and long tops, dresses etc.

i found maternity clothing quite frumpy

Lullabies2Paralyze · 10/04/2023 19:07

I found it a nightmare. I got some jeans from next with buttons so you could expand as you grew ….I still had them in tightest button and ideally needed a belt to keep them up even at the end of my pregnancy. Smaller size wouldn’t have fit past my thighs

boohoo and places like that were also awful, everything was so small still and not really maternity sized despite saying so

If you think you might want to breastfeed it might be worth investing in some maternity/nursing dresses from a decent place (so quite expensive but vinted would have some I am sure) jojo mamman (spelling sorry might be wrong) come to mind. And some site called stylish mamma have some nice jumpsuits and dresses

otherwise for pregnancy just buy larger size T-shirts or men’s T-shirts if you are not fussed on looking stylish and presentable.

Lullabies2Paralyze · 10/04/2023 19:09

I lived in asda maternity leggings most the time especially as I work from home so didn’t care about looking great

Greenorred · 10/04/2023 19:09

I do want to breastfeed but failed miserably last time.

My nice tops that don’t fit are from JoJo. I’ve tried a couple of brands - no luck with anything fitting properly. The only thing that fits are the tops that came from sainsburys of all places.

Maternity leggings from loveleggings - I lived in mine!

StrawberryWater · 10/04/2023 19:11

I didn’t get on with maternity clothes at all. I ended up crying in mothercare because absolutely nothing fit. I think I found one good pair of maternity trousers in next and that was it. My midwife told me off for wearing tracksuit bottoms to an appointment and I think I ranted at her for 10 minutes straight about shit maternity wear and her rude comment. She didn’t bring it up after that.

Greenorred · 10/04/2023 19:12

Bloody hell, that was rude of her.

I am just sick of looking like a tramp. It’s so undignified constantly yanking trousers up.

This was me every single time! I find the trousers awful! Always fell down on me too or gaped at the back, I always felt like you had to very “bumpy” to fit it them.

Greenorred · 10/04/2023 19:15

My stomach is a weird shape, it goes in quite a bit in the middle, always has. I think one of the problems is that I don’t look pregnant. But anything I get in just a bigger size is ridiculously big, if you see what I mean. It’s rubbish. I’m wishing away the pregnancy because I look such an absolute state.

I've given up with maternity jeans now. I'm 27 weeks with DC2, my bump is massive but with maternity jeans they either fit the legs but the bump band falls down or is too lose on the back or the bump band fits just right but the legs are too tight

I'm not living in maternity jumpsuits, they are so comfy!

violetskypurple · 10/04/2023 19:16

Greenorred · 10/04/2023 19:17

Where did you get the jumpsuits from? Could be a possibility. I don’t really suit dresses and I also struggle massively to shave my legs.

I do like h&m but struggle to find anything not just in black. I have bought some maternity jeans and actually really like them, although they are a bit big, they didn't have a small pair in.

Got a swimsuit from JoJo today (forgot when I booked swimming I can't fit in any costumes I have!) And it fitted really well.

Sapphire387 · 10/04/2023 19:19

George at Asda. Honestly. The leggings fit well and so do the dresses I have tried.

Greenorred · 10/04/2023 19:20

My swimming costume is the one thing that fits but not exactly practical for day to day wear Grin

Once the weather is better can you just wear your normal dresses? I found being pregnant through spring and summer so much easier as you can just wear stretch cotton tees with high waist elasticated trousers or midi / maxi dresses. So much easier to dress a bump.

Mutabiliss · 10/04/2023 19:21

I lived in leggings after about five months, with a few tunic tops/dresses and long jumpers (mostly pregnant in winter). I find maternity jeans fell down and took my knickers with them too, so annoying.

Hopefully it'll be warm enough to just wear stretchy dresses soon. My stomach goes in too (it's known as a B belly) and I didn't look properly round and pregnant until about eight months, but my bump sat quite high so I emphasised that with tighter (but stretchy) waistbands.

I think most women feel a bit of a state OP, it's not the most glamorous time in your life.

Albiboba · 10/04/2023 19:22

If they don’t fit you’re wearing the wrong size.
It’s the same with normal clothes, not all styles will suit you just because the have maternity in the title. Everyone is a different shape and size pregnancy or not.
Maternity bottoms never fit me, I just sized up in leggings or jeans. Some dresses I bought bigger others I did maternity.

ChiChaNaYubi · 10/04/2023 19:23

I got all of my maternity stuff off SHEIN! Dungarees were the best for me as nothing can fall off you and you can wear them Post partum. DS is 18 months and I’m still wearing my maternity dungarees ha!

Greenorred · 10/04/2023 19:23

i don’t wear normal dresses I’m afraid.

@Albiboba but then there is literally no size that fits, which makes no sense.

Well the weather is getting warmer now... Most people would probably be too bewildered to comment.

Is it a nice swimming costume?

Baguette2021 · 10/04/2023 19:24

Currently living in my M&S maternity jeans - worth a try? And H&M have some easy but not slobby dresses?
