To think maternity clothes don’t fit

Could well be me being awkward, but I’ve spent a fortune on maternity clothes and they just don’t seem to fit. I’ve spent the day hitching up my over the bump jeans, which just keep falling down and taking my knickers with them, meaning I’m constantly in danger of displaying my bum.

Tops are marginally better but the two pretty ones I bought don’t fit over my boobs (which aren’t massive - I mean, I’m a D so god knows how bigger chested women fare.

I have about three vest tops that fit and a couple of pairs of massive leggings. That’s it.

I’m fed up, uncomfortable and feel very ugly. Help.

I'm petite, had massive babies (9lbs 10oz & 8lb 5oz) and I had strange shaped bumps..

Maternity tops didn't fit me until I was about 8m pregnant. I preferred my New Look under bump jeans, had a lovely pair of over bump from Mamas & Papas.

I also had maternity jeans from ASOS but had to size down with them.. I think I was wearing size 6 mat with them.

Op maternity clothes didn't fit me until around 7/8 months both times!

Now I'd struggle to fit in them and my youngest is 5 Grin

TwoShades1 · 10/04/2023 23:25

It sounds like they are the wrong size. I got very little use out of maternity clothes as my bump was quite small. I mostly just wore normal clothes in a larger size. I would just get some lower cut normal jeans and do the old elastic around the button trick with a long top to over it.

Dungarees all the way.

I found H&M the best for jeans - I got three pairs and a pair of leggings from M&S and that was all I needed (the leggings I still wear now post partum 😂). I just wore an oversized t shirt or jumper. I didn't want anything too tight anyway and I also wanted stuff I could wear afterwards!
I bought a maternity dress off asos and it made me look HUGE!! So I just stuck to normal clothes in big sizes/slouchy styles 🤣

Oh and I also bought some plain stretchy cami vests I could pull down from M&S and where a normal top or blouse with

Quite a while since I had to use one but I bought some bump bands. Just the bands. I had to go to FILs funeral when I was 38 weeks and I only had jeans. Bump band to the rescue, My black (normal size) trousers with a black bump band over the top. Pulled the zip up as far as it would go, which by that point was about 2 teeth, but it was Secured by the bump band. Trousers didn't fall down but had all the movement I needed, plus just looked like a slightly longer, clingy top if it showed under whatever top I wore.
You can get different colours too.

I’ve never bothered buying any 🤷‍♀️ I’ve either worn my looser clothes or just sized up in the cheap stuff like my Primark leggings (normally wear size 2XS, by end of pregnancy wearing S) etc.

Have you tried topshop maternity jeans? I am currently 16w but not showing and they fit amazingly!

Ilovetea42 · 11/04/2023 00:17

I'm really tall and always get my clothes in the tall section so I found maternity clothes ridiculous. Like tops were wide enough to accommodate my bump, they just were like a crop top and I hated it! I often just got things that were normal clothes but were stretchy/oversized or a loose fit and leggings were a lifesaver after a certain point. I still wear a few of my maternity leggings because they were so stretchy they still fit fine. I focused on other things like doing my hair and nails and makeup and that made me feel better even when I wasn't happy with what I was wearing. New look mat jeans were decent and long enough!

I recommend the company Beyond Nine @Greenorred

My boy is 19 months now and I still wear their poppy jumpsuits. They're amazing!

It's so hard to dress a pregnant body! I never got on with over bump things cause I really didn't like to feel anything on my bump. Plus they didn't fit til really late on in my pregnancies.

Once the hair bobble for trousers and loose top trick stopped working my favourite outfit was under bump jeans and really plain maternity t-shirts from h&m and new look. I also don't wear dresses much (and I haven't shaved my legs since some time in 2022!) but in the end I bought three for work and just sucked it up. Size up ordinary leggings underneath in winter (band rolled down under my bump) those glue sticky hold ups in summer to avoid the whole maternity tights issue if you can't just go hairy legs!

That said, if I were doing it again I might try the bump band trick others have mentioned so I could keep wearing things I actually liked.

I always bought Seraphine over-bump jeans that had belt loops so I could still wear a belt, otherwise they ride down. Although this is a problem for me when I’m not pregnant to be fair.

Maternity clothes are awful. The best things I found were jeans and tops from Mothercare and some black trousers from Asda which were a perfect fit.

Made the mistake of selling all my maternity stuff on eBay as I then had a surprise second pregnancy soon after. The second time was even worse for getting clothes. Obviously Mothercare closed down so I couldn't re-buy the jeans and tops (I need short length so that makes it even harder). Also their leggings were amazing and I'd only sold them a week before finding out I was pregnant 😓.

I never managed to find any work trousers that fitted so had to go into the office in jeans or a pair of normal fit trousers 2 sizes bigger than my normal size.

I did manage to get some jeans from Seasalt that were ok but I'm not sure whether they do a maternity line anymore. They also shrunk hideously on the length.

If I'd found any decent maternity clothes I'd still be wearing them as a year later I'm still just as fat and all clothes are so bloody uncomfortable.

Unless you're slim with a lovely shaped bump, maternity clothes look horrendous. I was already overweight so pregnancy was never going to be a good look for me 😄

Hernamewaslola1 · 11/04/2023 09:13

Try seraphine! I have a few of their chinos and they fit really well. You buy your pre pregnancy size but if you are smaller than an UK 8 then you’ll need to buy it online. They have sales and discounts etc

gogohmm · 11/04/2023 09:35

I just wore a couple of sizes up until past 6 months. Had a pair of jeans and a pair of dungerees from Dorothy Perkins and baggy non maternity tops. Wore dresses to work, loose fitting rather than maternity ones.
