To suggest Harry potter is a rip off of star wars?

NOT MY SUGGESTION!

DH has suggested it based on some random youtube video.
He hasn't watched either series. I have watched all harry potter and 10 minutes of star wars.

Any thoughts?

They both use a lot of classic tropes (orphaned child hero, quest, hero learns to use a magical power, plucky band of rebels, evil vs good, dark overlord, older wiser mentor who dies, and I'm sure lots of others). But those are tropes for a reason. I mean, most if not all of them also apply to say, Spiderman, or Lord of the Rings, or even the story of Perseus.

I think its quite biblical. Harry dies to save everyone and then comes back to life!

Also, the fantasy genre is invariably and purposefully derivative. Originally from a combination of the Bible and Ancient Greek myths I think, and I'm of the belief that Dante was the first fantasy author (whether he knew it or not).

It's nothing like Star Wars, but it's a lot like Enid Blyton.

Did you too suffer through, "Finding God in Harry Potter" at some point as a child?!

Star Wars is a rip off of Dune

Harry Potter is a rip off of the worst witch.

Everything borrows heavily from what went before. Nothing is new.

Apart from anything else, JKR just really isn't a sci-fi/fantasy person. She's openly said that she's not into fantasy.

She's a mystery and adventure writer who just happened to have an idea based in a wizarding school.

My brother has written a story about a boy wizard at a boarding school. He pre-empts the "HP rip off" jokes by getting in there first. My own fantasy novel was influenced and inspired by Brexit, but also my history degree. But it's not an allegory or a retelling. It looks at populism, nationalism, trade - but centres on the personal relationships. It even starts with a bloody pandemic, and the debt ramifications of that - written in 2016.

Shakespeare wrote this in 1605:

"Love cools, friendship falls off, brothers divide. In cities, mutinies; in countries, discord; in palaces, treason; and the bond cracked twixt father and son."

It's practically my synopsis!

It really is the shallow end of the pond to consider things as "rip offs". There's nothing new under the sun.

Yes, he’s talking bollocks. Make him watch both and then maybe his opinion will be worth hearing.

Why would you want to debate something that you know absolutely nothing about whatsoever? Grin How can that be interesting?

Does anyone have any restaurant recommendations for Krakow? I've never been and I'm never going.

After you haven't been, be sure to have strong opinions about the food you didn't eat Minnie.

Another who has noted the similarities with The Worst Witch. I hadn’t heard of it until watching it on Netflix with the kids (and we subsequently read the books), and was surprised by how heavily HP borrowed from it.

Off topic, but I was similarly surprised (shocked) by how much of The Casual Vacancy had been borrowed from South Riding.

They are both children's entertainment that gets taken way too seriously by some adults.

stargirl1701 · 10/04/2023 10:40

No. Harry Potter is a mash up of The Dark is Rising and The Worst Witch.

I'd rather be friends with someone who took Harry Potter too seriously than with someone who took football (for example) too seriously.

Shit guys wait til you hear about the Bible.. or the Iliad. Or the Tale of Genji (sp?) Or the Labours of Hercules. Or anything by Diana Wynne Jones.

An 11 year old propounded this exact same theory to me yesterday!

I didn't even know Luke Skywalker was raised by his aunt and uncle.

Yes but the skywalker aunt and uncle were generally pleasant? Hardly the same as the potter relatives.
