To suggest Harry potter is a rip off of star wars?

Summerishere123 · 09/04/2023 21:26

NOT MY SUGGESTION!

DH has suggested it based on some random youtube video.
He hasn't watched either series. I have watched all harry potter and 10 minutes of star wars.

Any thoughts?

Most books (and pretty much all films) are derivative, Star Wars certainly was. Harry Potter too. Even the mainstays of some religions are pulled from others.

There’s frequently a push to discredit popular works just because they’re popular and, of course, there’s the whole attempt by a few very loud trans activists to pull her down for her sex matters views. But Rowling’s books were good storytelling. And they still are.

Itstarts · 09/04/2023 22:24

T4W - there are only 6(?) story structures.

OMG12 · 09/04/2023 22:38

Both are just an iteration of one of the oldest story arch’s -the hero’s journey

Cinpple · 09/04/2023 22:43

They both share some common tropes but I don't think HP is derivative of SW in particular.

PuppyMonkey · 09/04/2023 22:47

YABU to have watched 10 whole minutes of Star Wars. More than I could manage.Grin

JFDIYOLO · 09/04/2023 22:50

George Lucas was a great admirer of Joseph Campbell's Hero with a Thousand Faces which analyses the hero's journey concept. You'll find the same story in the Lord of the Rings, Aquaman, His Dark Materials, you name it. The scene in HDM where Lyra first meets Lee and Iorek is basically Luke meeting Han and Chewie in Mos Isley. Luke and Ben is basically Wart and Merlin in The Sword in the Stone. This stuff repeats and repeats.

Daftest thing I have ever heard. Confused

GettingThereCharleyBear · 09/04/2023 22:56

@DannyZukosSmile really?? Did you read the thread?

MinnieEgg · 09/04/2023 22:56

Why would you want to debate something that you know absolutely nothing about whatsoever? Grin How can that be interesting?

Does anyone have any restaurant recommendations for Krakow? I've never been and I'm never going.

Notellinganyone · 09/04/2023 22:56

Both of them, in common with many other films and novels, rely on some pretty basic tropes. Good v Evil, finding one’s true identity etc. That’s pretty broad though and the specifics are very different.

You should go MinnieEgg, it's a cool city. The perogi is amazing.

Crinkle77 · 09/04/2023 23:19

Have to admit I've not read Harry Potter but the premise of the first book sounded very similar to The Worst Witch. What with both books being set in witch/wizard school and learning to ride broomsticks and cast spells.

merryhouse · 09/04/2023 23:32

"Prior art, DH, prior art"

Deadringer · 09/04/2023 23:40

I lot of Disney movies, Roald Dahl stories and even books by Charles Dickens have a similar set up; 'good' orphan overcomes adversity and triumphs over evil. A person growing up in a nuclear family is likely to grow up happy and well and without any sort of hazardous life journey. Who wants to read/write about that?

theWarOnPeace · 09/04/2023 23:42

Dying at “R2D2 is given a sock”

The tropes definitely converge at points, but orphan and good vs evil, overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds with the help of a band of misfit friends, hero’s journey, touch of romance are always recycled across literature.

Even Jane Eyre is an orphan and has a fire and ice contrast running through it, nasty aunt and bastard cousins etc. Game of Thrones. On and on. We were listening to music today and were trying to guess the song from the first few chords - we kept getting them wrong because there’s apparently nothing new under the sun.

ErrolTheDragon · 10/04/2023 09:39

Someone upthread mentioned Narnia - thats entirely deliberately a rip off of the Christian story, with a side-helping of evacuated kids and talking animals.

DisquietintheRanks · 10/04/2023 09:44

MoggyP · 09/04/2023 21:29

Is your DH some sort of god, that means whatever shite comes from his lips is an opinion worthy of debate?

What is your opinion on this?

Amen

ErrolTheDragon · 10/04/2023 09:54

Wtf would anyone bother watching, let alone discussing, a YouTube video of two series they'd never watched? Maybe the OP and her DH are both very bored and could do with some book or film recommendations?

YellowGreenBlue · 10/04/2023 09:57

donquixotedelamancha · 09/04/2023 21:37

He's got a point, what with Harry being Voldemort's son, Hermione being his sister, Dumbledore dying in the first book then ghost-Dumbledore sending Harry off to train with his old master, Ron being a loveable rogue smuggler, R2D2 gets his freedom by being given a sock and....oh wait, no it's total bollocks

Grin Grin Grin

I can't tell if you are taking the piss or not!

And why are people discussing and having opinions in things they haven't watched or read? Confused

MammaWeasel · 09/04/2023 21:31

There are only so many storylines, there are bound to be parallels

Exactly

AllOfThemWitches · 10/04/2023 10:04

Isn't most fantasy a rip off of mythology

Kanaloa · 10/04/2023 10:04

They have some similarities, but you could say that about literally any two stories really. AIBU to say Harry Potter is basically a rip off of Buffy because they’re both about a chosen one with two school friends who are a boy and a girl, guided by a mentor, who then follow a prophecy to fight a creepy looking white skinned dude in a black robe?

Almost anything will have similarities if you set it out like that. It doesn’t make the one that came out second a ‘rip off.’

Well, I’m more interested in why the OP feels that a throwaway theory on something her DH knows nothing about is worth being posted on the internet and other peoples’ thoughts invited on it. Did she think we were all going to cry ‘GENIUS!’ and suggest he starts a YouTube channel called ‘Stuff I’ve never seen but will propound about’?
