AIBU to cancel?

We have a holiday booked in the summer. DC are 6 and 4. We'll all be sleeping together in 1 room for 10 days. DC 4 doesn't cope well with staying up late and wakes up stupidly early no matter what time he goes to bed. He's also a very light sleeper, as am I. DC6 has a fierce thumb sucking habit and it's so noisy it wakes me and DC4 up if we're in the same room. We're in hotel at the moment and DC4 has has meltdown after meltdown all day from being tired. On holiday it will also be hot, busy and over stimulating. AIBU to strongly consider cancelling? It's going to cost about 8k in total and that's a lot of money if it's going to be a total shit show.

Cancel and then you have £7600 to spend on something more suitable. Don't beat yourself up about it you identified the problem early on.

MsChatterbox · 08/04/2023 06:32

Cancel and book something with 2 rooms!

PoBaFla · 08/04/2023 06:44

All in one room, no way! That's not a holiday.
We always book an apartment for this very reason. Much more space and everyone doesn't have to go to bed/get up at same time.
Cancel and rebook something that actually meets your family's needs

totallybonafido · 08/04/2023 06:55

It's a shame because we really wanted the facilities, kids club, all inclusive etc and self catering will be really different. At least it will be cheaper.

Cancel sounds like a nightmare but check terms and conditions first there will be a cut off and you may end up owing money.

FlounderingFruitcake · 08/04/2023 07:01

Absolutely cancel. Losing £400 is annoying but it’s a hell of a lot better than 8k for a week of shit sleep, how much would you even enjoy all the facilities if you’re absolutely knackered? Book something else and prioritise separate bedrooms!

totallybonafido · 08/04/2023 07:01

If we cancel more than 60 days out we only lose the deposit.

Do asap then you will feel much better that many people in one room sleep deprived is my idea of hell.

Bridesmaidingreen · 08/04/2023 07:12

£7600 should still get you something lovely, shop around!

NoSquirrels · 08/04/2023 07:25

Cancel it. You can still get all-inclusive, kids club etc with a different room set-up. You don’t necessarily need 2 rooms, just a family room/suite that’s set up to allow 2 sleeping spaces. They are out there, although your choice of hotel/location/other compromises might have to be made.

This.

Honestly I don't think this type of set up would work for many families. I really think you'd be able to find what you need for the remaining money.

Hopelesscynic · 08/04/2023 07:49

Cant believe you were going to pay £8K for this kind of holiday. All in 1 room, even if no issues with the children is pretty grim - I wouldn't go if you paid me.

I've done holidays at self catered (nice) apartments for 10 day periods - beach location (abroad), cleaning services, dining at restaurants every evening. For 3 people still about 1/2 of your price. There are lots of other options within your holiday budget.

Portable white noise machine and ear plugs x

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 08/04/2023 08:39

When do you have to decide by?

We cured mychilds thumb sucking in 3 days by using that horrible nail varnish stuff after the dentist managed to convince them it was a bad idea. I'm a light sleeper but we use white noise when we're in the same room. Also if there is a pool on holiday- I found the kids slept loads later due to being physically exhausted through swimming. Lastly if there is a time difference (and it's in europe) you can keep them on uk time so they effectively wake up and go to bed later

Grumpybutfunny · 08/04/2023 08:50

Could DC4 have an afternoon nap to make it easier? Anti-histamines can be sedating or ear plugs for you maybe. You could get interconnecting rooms in another hotel but would that be a holiday for you and DH.

You can definitely get kids clubs at places with apartments, we've done it. We've always eaten out but sometimes there's a meal plan you can buy as well.

If you see somewhere you like you could look into booking direct with the hotel as sometimes there's wider range of rooms available. We did this to Greece a few years ago. I think it was Thomas Cook were only offering 7 or 14 nights to 1 bedroom apartment (which would actually be ok as 2 separate sleeping areas). We wanted 10 nights so we booked own flights and booked same accommodation directly and we were able to get 2 bedroom for very little more money

CleaningOutMyCloset · 08/04/2023 09:12

I'd cancel or book another room. We used to have to do this with our dd's. I would be in one room with dd, I'd go to bed with her and read. My dh would stay up with the older, go to kids club etc so she didn't miss out.

Snugglemonkey · 08/04/2023 09:29

I would cancel and book somewhere with another room.

billy1966 · 08/04/2023 17:32

Not a chance would I spend 8k for 10 days of utter misery.

LlynTegid · 08/04/2023 17:58

I'd cancel in your shoes.

Separately start to deal with the noisy thumb sucking habit. Spare your 6 year old annoying you and possibly from teasing or worse from children at school.

Cosycover · 08/04/2023 18:05

Where are you going?

Surely you could get a villa for 8k

Powerof321 · 08/04/2023 18:10

I would never have booked it under those circumstances so if i was you i’d take the hit of £400 odd & cancel. You can then look for something more suitable and cheaper with what you’ll he saving!

WellTidy · 08/04/2023 18:18

You can get a two bedroom suite in an all inclusive hotel on the beach with hotel-only guests using the water park in Crete that has kids club. We didn’t use the kids club but everything else about it was fantastic. Look at Fodele Beach and Waterpark hotel if you’re interested.

AbreathofFrenchair · 08/04/2023 18:19

Where are you going?

£8,000 for one room?!

I'd cancel tbh. Might be too late for this year unless you leave it till last minute for a last minute deal but I'd definitely start looking for next year
