To put the kettle on so early?

Day 2 in Canada, yesterday DS1 was awake from 3am, we came down around 4.30 to play Uno. Today DS2 has been awake from 3ish. We are down at 5 to build a Lego dragon he got in a magazine. I'm getting the brunt of this as 1)I wouldn't sleep through anyway as am a light sleeper 2)DH is doing all the driving on the wrong side of the road.

We are sharing the house with BIL and his partner, they have the only TV in the house in their room.

It's bloody echoey due to no carpets or curtains and minimal soft furnishings.

I really want a cup of tea though but the kettle will be noisy. Would I be wrong to put it on this early?

Could you bring the kettle to your room?

pussycatinfluffyslippers · 06/04/2023 13:12

No.
Kettles aren't that loud, just close the doors and keep your fingers crossed that they're heavy sleepers. Grin

Hazelnuttella · 06/04/2023 13:13

I don’t think kettles are that loud. Maybe switch it off before it gets to the final aggressive boil if that’s the loudest bit.

red78hot · 06/04/2023 13:14

Depends if it is a stove top whistle kettle rather than an electric one.

Jasminajo · 06/04/2023 13:15

Bloody hell sounds hellish

presumably you are very close to have travelled such a distance so visit

so hell yes

how old are your DC?

MoongazyHare · 06/04/2023 13:15

It would be quieter to boil a small pan of water on the stove, if you can get a pan out of a drawer or cupboard without making too much noise.

Jasminajo · 06/04/2023 13:16

No bloody way would I be taking DS to build Lego at 3am even if jet lagged

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 06/04/2023 13:16

I doubt a kettle is any noisier than building Lego or playing Uno.

Jasminajo · 06/04/2023 13:20

My heart would go out to my sister up at 3am with DC

Quite honestly I would probably get up and make her a cup of tea!! So yes op go for it

Jasminajo · 06/04/2023 13:21

Op you’re playing UNO???

Id be less inclined to agree to UNO than putting on the kettle if I was worried about noise!!

Hankunamatata · 06/04/2023 13:22

I'd totally put kettle on.

JMSA · 06/04/2023 13:23

Oh my Lord, I hope they're heavy sleepers.

Hazelnuttella · 06/04/2023 13:24

If they wake up they can lie there feeling smug that they don’t have to get up with children. You have my sympathy OP.

Bakingwithmyboys · 06/04/2023 13:24

DC are 8 and 4. Somehow being very quiet and amazing. They are tired bless them. Uno was being played quietly. The Lego building was just a magazine one so quick.

Although now demands for other games are appearing. Lol

I like the idea of boiling a pan of water.

So if they are tired, darkened room, and you quietly reading.

not bloomin playing card games and Lego?!!

I see you have extensive experience of majorly jet lagged children.

I do.

and if they’re tired, I wouldn’t have them up at 3am playing games.

EthicalNonMahogany · 06/04/2023 13:31

I doubt OP hustled them out of bed, I imagine she took a sensible call that getting them up and playing quietly might create a reset and they could go back to nap later. Why is it so hard to believe that she's are making sensible decisions based on sound judgement, given OP is sighted on more of the situation than you are?

JassyRadlett · 06/04/2023 13:32

Jasminajo · 06/04/2023 13:28

I do.

If it lets the other jet lagged people get over their own jet lag better, and the kids are clearly not going back to sleep, much better to let the sleeping person get on with it and keep the kids occupied.

If you've got such extensive experience you'll know that it's possible to have kids who are both tired and who have zero hope of going back to sleep. 'Darkened room while you quietly read and they happily lie there...' 😂

EthicalNonMahogany · 06/04/2023 13:32

Also tomorrow I'd have the TV out of the adults' room into a communal area. I wouldn't have kids watching TV for hours under any other circumstances, but jet lag is different.

I promise you that I’ve had years of jet lag experience with two young children and if they woke at 3am and were tired (as the op said), it would be remain in bed but I’ll read to them.

they would sleep, at least just to get through to 5am.

Jasminajo · 06/04/2023 13:37

Toddlers are different

but 4 and 8 aren’t toddlers 🤷‍♀️

Agree with this, as long as not a whistle type

Jet lag is tough although I usually find mine is worse than Dc

tattygrl · 06/04/2023 13:50

Best bet I'd say would just be to ask your hosts! Just a casual "hey, would it be a problem if I was to put the kettle on in the early hours when I'm up with the kids? Not sure how sound travels in this house and I don't want to disturb you". They can quickly let you know if it's going to be too loud and I'm sure they'll either be fine with it or eager to set you up with alternative snack and drink provisions for your early mornings.

Jasminajo · 06/04/2023 13:51

But she wants one now @tattygrl ! So would be awful to go an wake them to ask!
