Can't get to sleep & got to be up at 430am for driving job

My son has got to be up at 430am to get ready for work as a delivery driver for a supermarket. This is only a filler job until he goes back into the armed forces it's only his second week.
He went to bed early enough & has done everything he can to try to get to sleep but at 1am he's still awake. Should he ring in sick or try to tough it out? He will not have had nearly enough sleep to be driving around from 6am til 2pm. It's worrying me a lot.

It’s not unreasonable to worry about a loved one who is clearly not getting much sleep at all prior to driving most of the day.
Some of the replies on here are absolutely pathetic.
He may have to power through with lots of fresh air, windows open and caffeine to get through the day.

Hope it goes ok OP.

This thread is a prime example of Mumsnet posters being rude for absolutely no reason at all.
Isn't it.
I think you sound caring and helpful, OP, not nannying.
Shame people can't just shut up if they don't have helpful advice. What did he do in the end?

insomnia is horrible. But basic sleep hygiene includes not having your phone with you. Once you notice "I’m not sleeping" and start tracking that, all is lost, in my experience.

Typical first early syndrome 😀!
Once that one is out the way he will be fine.Very common amongst shift workers and we just crack on.He will be fine.but advise him not to come home and have a sleep, wait until this evening and have an early night.

@EmilyGilmoresSass well I asked the question because it's only the second week & didn't want to be seen as unreliable by ringing in sick so soon; but obviously sleep deprivation is not a good thing when driving is it.
And my arsiness is only aimed at the ones who cannot answer without sarcasm/swearing, not at the nicer pp who have answered in a more constructive manner.
As another pp has said this thread is a prime example of posters being rude for no reason at all. I'll leave it there, he's gone in & nothing has happened so all is fine.

I'm 35 and last year I drove 200 miles in one day after having 4 hours sleep. It wasn't great, but it had to be done. I couldn't go back to sleep anyway as I have 2 kids. But he does need to get into a good sleep pattern. I would struggle to get up at 4.30 every day. I'm naturally a night owl

I'm really surprised that so many people either don't know, or don't care, how dangerous driving with sleep deprivation is.
