Holiday buggy at 4, aibu?

Hi all,

We are going away in a couple of days and I am undecided on weather to take the buggy. We last went away with DD when she was around 18 months and it was god send. We didn't have to be back in the room for her nap, I didn't have to carry a changing bag and we could stay out past her bedtime.

This time she is obviously older but I am still thinking about taking it, it's meant to be around 27 degrees in the day time and although she isn't a bad walker, I still think she will find it tough. There is also a hope that she will nap in the buggy. I think with the queues at the airport at the moment I think it will be a bit easier.

Is it ridiculous to be pushing a 4yo in a buggy?

Personally I think a 4 year old should be capable of walking, but it’s your kid and your holiday so do what you like.

BrutusMcDogface · 05/04/2023 19:12

If we were going in a hot, sunny abroad holiday I’d definitely consider a pushchair for my four year old. We currently use a wagon thing for all the day out crap and he sits in it when his legs are tired! When we went to Florida we had one and wouldn’t have coped without it (kids were 3, 6 and 8!)

YomAsalYomBasal · 05/04/2023 19:14

Nope, totally acceptable.

Freetodowhatiwant · 05/04/2023 19:15

Yes take it! I had my two in a side by side double until the older was 5. especially on holiday. We got some funny looks (when in the UK not abroad) but in reality the eldest could walk for miles (a good 10k adult steps and more) but occasionally needed so sit down. Who cares what other people think.

Last holiday we went on my 3 1/2 year old refused to go in the buggy because “she’s a big girl” and I ended up giving it away when we were there.

We thought we would have this problem but when we take a buggy on day trips she still manages to fall asleep in it lol

Mine were out of buggies by age 3, but they used them on holidays up to age 5. Afternoon naps (which they wouldn’t have at home, but they were much longer days) and also going to sleep after dinner so we could stay out past 8pm - godsend!

Zola1 · 05/04/2023 19:18

Took 1 year old and 4 year old to Turkey last summer, 1 year old used the buggy obv but 4 year old regularly tried to sneak in as he is lazy/was tired from the heat

We are also hoping she will fall asleep after dinner so we aren’t stuck in the hotel room in the evenings.

People can sometimes be weird about children in buggies over a certain age but dont bat an eyelid at children being driven everywhere

Recently we had the school try to tell us we had to stop using the buggy for our autistic 5 year old !!!

OP you know your child best - if you think a buggy will be useful on holiday then take it !

SometimesMaybe · 05/04/2023 19:20

Definitely. Much more comfortable for them later in the evening to chill in the buggy whilst you are having a drink of whatever or not have to drag/carry them back to accommodation when overtired.

AliciaBurke92 · 05/04/2023 19:20

Thank you ladies, I think we will take it and hope that she doesn’t kick up a fuss using it. She has been fine using it in the UK so it shouldn’t be an issue. At least I can put all of her bits in the basket as well.

Take it! Who cares what anyone else thinks!!

Disneyblueeyes · 05/04/2023 19:23

Do it!
4 is fine !

KateAusten · 05/04/2023 19:23

We're going on holiday this summer somewhere really hilly and a good walk from the beach, driving down isn't an option as parking is v limited

I was thinking last night about DD who's just turned 4. If she gets tired and we're along way from the house on foot with big hills to walk up we may consider taking the buggy

I'd play it safe and take it OP otherwise you might regret it, you don't have to use it

bellsbuss · 05/04/2023 19:25

Take it

OhmygodDont · 05/04/2023 19:26

I’d say four is fine. Five starts to push it and by six it’s too old.

Theelephantinthecastle · 05/04/2023 19:26

It really depends on the sort of holiday. We are going to Chicago later this year and will be getting around on public transport and it will involve too much walking for my almost 4 year old. But we are currently away on a UK break where we have a car and haven't brought a buggy because we aren't walking much.

Hardbackwriter · 05/04/2023 19:27

I find it really hard to imagine having a four year old in a buggy, but then mine started school a few weeks after turning 4 so I guess that I think of four year olds as school age children and so maybe that changes how I see it. Will you be ok pushing a four year old round in 27 degree heat?! If so then I agree you should do whatever makes life easiest - it's a holiday!

We are going to Turkey and last time we went DD was 2 and the buggy was a lifesaver to put the bags in as we did a lot of walking.

Take it, if not for the four year old, for all the stuff you need to have with you for a 4 year old!

100% huge airport, tired child, take the buggy.

Girasoli · 05/04/2023 19:30

Will she still get in the buggy? S2 is three and tbh the buggy just becomes a bag carrier on long days out as he wants to walk with his brother.

Also will there be cobbled streets?

We still have it in the boot of the car and offer it to her if we are going to be out all day. Most of the time she is fine going in the buggy and will often fall asleep if it’s laid flat and the hoods over.
