Holiday buggy at 4, aibu?

Hi all,

We are going away in a couple of days and I am undecided on weather to take the buggy. We last went away with DD when she was around 18 months and it was god send. We didn't have to be back in the room for her nap, I didn't have to carry a changing bag and we could stay out past her bedtime.

This time she is obviously older but I am still thinking about taking it, it's meant to be around 27 degrees in the day time and although she isn't a bad walker, I still think she will find it tough. There is also a hope that she will nap in the buggy. I think with the queues at the airport at the moment I think it will be a bit easier.

Is it ridiculous to be pushing a 4yo in a buggy?

Same situation here, taking our just turned 4 year old abroad and thinking of taking one for testing tired legs/possible naps.

Does anyone have any recommendations for strollers which are good for bigger children? Going to try and source a second hand one.

I feel like we did when dd was 4, but she may have been 3. Think we did it for mallorca, cos palma airport is a long old stretch to march a 4 Yr old across and she was a stroppy cow at the best of times. We're also tall, with long strides. My kids had to learn to run before they could walk, so they wouldn't get left behind in a field somewhere.

We may have even binned it when we came home. It was a battered old mclaren and had served us well.

@wineandsun Venice is full of cobbles and bridges, so you’ll end up having to carry the buggy quite a bit. We did this when our daughter was 18 months and still worth taking the buggy, but it was a very light, travel buggy.

We didn’t take one with us on holiday to Japan, but ended up buying one for our 5 year old after a couple of days because we were doing so much walking. You can get cheap travel pushchairs that are fine for the average 5 year old (about £30 in John Lewis 10 years ago, so will be a bit more expensive now)

Moonlaserbearwolf · 05/04/2023 21:42

Just looked it up - the equivalent John Lewis one is now £60 (currently reduced to £54). Doubled in price since 2017!
That was fine for a 5yr old on holiday.

we had a cheap umbrella fold buggy that was great for holidays, even for 5 or 6 year old. it meant you could go out for a late evening dinner in portugal and then child could sleep in buggy and get pushed back to the hotel. plus carrying all the junk.

Oakyloaky · 05/04/2023 21:49

I definitely took a buggy for our children up to age of 5 …just do it ! Enjoy your holiday.

Noodledoodledoo · 05/04/2023 21:51

Was the biggest godsend when getting through airports or waiting in queues at them.

Take it.

TheFairyCaravan · 05/04/2023 21:56

We never took one for ours when they were that age, but I wish we had when DS2 was coming up to 4 because he was always really tired by the end of the day.

If you’ve got it and she doesn’t need it, it won’t hurt. And it will come in handy to lug everything to the beach should she not want to sit in it anyway.

anon90210 · 05/04/2023 22:03

Absolutely fine. I kept my 4 year olds buggy for holiday

LivvyA9 · 05/04/2023 22:17

We found it a lifesaver, we would also put DD down and get her to sleep before me and DH go out in the evening. It was also handy as she wasn’t potty trained so we changed her in the buggy

We tried a few different ones and ended up getting a MyBabiie one from Gumtree, I think we paid £40 for it and it had been used a handful of times. The basket is really spacious, the foot rest can go up or down depending if they are sleeping and it’s really nice to push.

I think if she is happy to sit in it and be comfortable then it's absolutely fine. My DGD is rather tall and the buggy we had for her at ours was outgrown by the time she was not quite four. This made life a bit difficult for a while until she was happy to walk longer distances - she also likes to use her scooter a lot. The being able to carry all the stuff on the buggy is also a big consideration.

lifehappens12 · 05/04/2023 22:44

Take it - you are on holiday and if it makes life easier - do it.

Plus kids get tired travelling, days out, heat so let them have a space to rest

Equalitea · 06/04/2023 11:05

I think it’s totally acceptable. I took a buggy for my son when he was 5 and we went to Disney. I knew he’d be shattered 🤷‍♀️
