To think illnesses have been utterly awful this year

lipikar · 05/04/2023 13:07

We've been ill most fortnights since the beginning of November.

What the fuck is going on? I'm so fed up.

Is it the 5 year old starting school? Or something else. He's actually been the least ill of us 4.

I'm drained.

AIBU to think we have multiple threads like this every year? Yes it’s usually related to having young kids at school they bring all sorts home.

lipikar · 05/04/2023 13:11

If mumsnet ran on unique thread subjects the whole place would have died out years ago.

Ok, YANBU, based on your anecdotal experience, to say colds have been much worse for you this year. Happy now? Have you looked into diet/lifestyle changes to strengthen your immune system?

MeMyBooksAndMyCats · 05/04/2023 13:29

At least it's just colds & bugs, be grateful it's not a chronic illness for life then you'll know what's it like to be drained.
YABU just take vitamins to boost your immune system.

TheChippendenSpook · 05/04/2023 13:31

Why is everyone so snippy on here these days?

No idea.

I don't think anything is any different from normal tbh, not been sick, never had covid, not at all healthy with lifestyle. I think constant mask wearing and sanitising everything may have weakened immune systems and made people less able to fight off a sniffle etc

Supernova23 · 05/04/2023 13:36

Been pretty standard for coughs, colds, D&V and flu in my hospital. The weather hasn't helped. It's been a horrible, cold, wet, grim March, so everything is still circulating. Hoping a warm April kills off a lost of the nasties.

lipikar · 05/04/2023 13:37

Maybe it's just been a very very unlucky year for us. Praying April brings warmth and wellness.

Yep. I had a bad throat, was coughing, and lost my voice. Happens most years. But instead of shaking it in a couple of weeks, it lasted from the end of November to the end of January.
I was exhausted.

My mum has had back to back colds and chest infections all winter.

Even DH has had multiple colds and he rarely gets ill.

I wouldn’t say the kids have been any worse than usual, but they have had colds.

Everyone I spoke to over December / January was the same. It was the sheer length of time it was taking people to recover that surprised me the most.

Thatsok · 05/04/2023 13:46

Tbf it does come across as a bit frustrating to moan about a cold to someone chronically/seriously ill as people are on this site. Praying for you...?

WinterCarlisle · 05/04/2023 13:47

Well personally I think that this winter has been really shitty!! I work in a hospital and we’ve seen far more flu / strep A / community acquire pneumonia than for a long time plus we’ve also had a spike in patients testing positive for covid. We’re normally settling down a bit now with the respiratory viruses but no sign so far.

I have a pretty robust immune system (years of NHS work) and so far I’ve had flu and a rotten cold and I’ve woken up this morning feeling like I’m getting something yet again. Apart from one episode of relatively “mild” covid in Feb 2022 I’ve not had a bug or virus in years.

My youngest is never ill and was v unwell (not hospitalised) with Strep A just after Christmas.

I know numerous families who’ve literally had one bug after the other. We also have had a nightmare in our school’s reception classes with one thing or another.

Bored of it now! Bring on the sun!!

What?!

Christ you can't moan about anything here in case someone else has it worse now?

My eyes are going to roll out of the back of my head !

(Soz to all those who can't roll their eyes obvs ...... 🙄)

FionnulaTheCooler · 05/04/2023 13:50

My DD seems to have been constantly ill this winter, we've had 2 lots of antibiotics for viruses that have progressed into tonsillitis/ear infection and she seems to have a constant cough hanging around her. I'm putting it down to her having started secondary school and mixing with about 5 times as many kids as she was at primary. It is wearing though, she's been off sick a few times so I hope her immunity builds up a bit for once she starts her coursework that will count towards exams in a couple of years.

Just think it's a bit dramatic... I'M DRAINED.

I'M LOLLING

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 05/04/2023 13:51

I thought it was generally acknowledged that this year had been awful for many, due to the fact we’ve all been isolated for much of the preceding years?

Laiste · 05/04/2023 13:51

And yes OP i think this winter has been the worst for a while for illnesses in our house too.

5 adults and one child (8) in the house.

Moreorlessmentallystable · 05/04/2023 13:52

Lockdown...let's just say our immune systems are "out of practice"...

Laiste · 05/04/2023 13:54

@Thatsok now i'm loling cos you're loling 😆

Backstreets · 05/04/2023 13:54

I have staffing responsibilities and can confirm there has been a lot of disease around, started late fall and hit some peaks in January. Please god let next winter be less of a bug circus.

Thatsok · 05/04/2023 13:54

Like not to be mean to people whose children have had strep A etc, that must be very frightening

But I just think "it is winter, there's common run-of-the-mill illnesses". That's it really.

earsup · 05/04/2023 13:55

It does seem relentless....i have had more colds than usual as have friends, am annoyed that a friend who has a shocking diet and smokes loads never ever catches a cold or flu or virus !! Yet I eat well, exercise and take loads of vits.

Toomanysquishmallows · 05/04/2023 13:55

we have had a terrible winter in my house , dd2 has had covid twice , and there seem to have been non stop colds .

Whatthediddlyfeck · 05/04/2023 13:56

We’ve spent the last 3 years locked up…no one’s immune system has had to work and is now facing an onslaught

Pixiedust1234 · 05/04/2023 13:56

Is it the 5 year old starting school?

Yes, its a very common thing. Start adding extra vitamins and fresh fruit to your diet to boost your immune system. Its the only period of time my DH had man flu. Once they start secondary it eases dramatically.

I think its partly because little ones invade each others personal space so readily. They hug, kiss, share things, huddle together with hair touching, aren't as careful with hand washing or covering mouths when sneezing etc. This also means you need to watch out for nits!
