To think illnesses have been utterly awful this year

lipikar · 05/04/2023 13:07

We've been ill most fortnights since the beginning of November.

What the fuck is going on? I'm so fed up.

Is it the 5 year old starting school? Or something else. He's actually been the least ill of us 4.

I'm drained.

It's not because someone has it worse than someone else it's because it's really over dramatic and attention seeking.
It's a virus that lasts a couple of weeks at best, then you have people with serious life long illnesses who don't moan at all.

TwilightSkies · 05/04/2023 14:00

People are snippy cus a lot of peoples immune systems are a bit fucked because they’ve had multiple covid infections. They get angry when you mention it though 😂

Yes, its a very common thing. Start adding extra vitamins and fresh fruit to your diet to boost your immune system. Its the only period of time my DH had man flu. Once they start secondary it eases dramatically.

I think its partly because little ones invade each others personal space so readily. They hug, kiss, share things, huddle together with hair touching, aren't as careful with hand washing or covering mouths when sneezing etc. This also means you need to watch out for nits!

WHEN THEY START SECONDARY!! That's years away

Oh for gods sake. I apologise to everyone and everything who has it worse than I do.

There, ok?

I agree OP and I think everyone has suffered as so many people have had covid so their immune systems have already had a battering even with getting it mildly let alone any worse.

I'm still getting over flu, it was horrendous and I had the jab, I was a full week in bed with dreadful fever. There's loads of flu around this year.

It doesn't help when you have kids at school, they bring everything home .

I keep hearing about people with Covid recently, from as far afield as Scotland, Amsterdam as well as more locally (England)

My elderly dad was in hospital with it last week, he's back out now though.

Uh huh. Welcome to parenthood 😂 To be fair it does diminish slightly by each year or if their friendship group goes down to only one or two close friends but when they go to secondary its a real light bulb moment of how much of a petridish they are as little ones. There was at least one (different) parent every pick up who quickly dropped their child's hand due to its disgusting slimy nature, whether snot or food or glue etc.

user1471538283 · 05/04/2023 14:09

I think this every year. The only year I was physically well was during lockdown and limited contact with everyone.

I've just got over flu and honestly I felt so rubbish. And I was the only one to pick it up!

But yes mixing, children at school and the bugs just run around.

lipikar · 05/04/2023 14:11

The baby is missing more nursery than not. I may as well take 500 pounds out of the bank each month and set fire to it with a lighter.

OP posts:
lipikar · 05/04/2023 14:12

And they eat more fruit than I can shake a stick at. That probably costs about £500 a month too

Hmm, mine are 14 and 18 and still bring home things.

tatteddear · 05/04/2023 14:13

It's certainly been my worst year on record for illness. I've been sick on and off since mid November.Currently on day five of not really being able to get up with what I assume is flu. Absolutely wiped out. About to cancel our Easter plans. As I had to cancel Christmas stuff, and things for my birthday, and bits of our wedding as one or all of us were sick. I'm actually very low about it and I just want to feel a bit better tbh.

It’s outrageous that you people are thoughtlessly typing all these replies when there are people in the world without fingers. So inconsiderate.

Why is everyone so snippy on here these days?

My two have had their worst year of minor illnesses, particularly DS1 in y7. It started in the first few weeks of term and he's just been hit by one after the other after the other, about 8 colds/ coughs/ general illnesses. DS2 has fared better, but the extreme heat in the summer triggered his asthma and it was well into the autumn before that was fully under control and not affecting school attendance. DH and I have had a normal range of colds despite DS1 constantly being ill.

The nursery years weren't nearly this bad, and typically they've had one day off ill a year. I suspect that DS1 has come off hardest due to moving to a secondary with huge catchment after a small local school and the stress of coping with secondary life (autistic). Plus it was a struggle to get outdoors and build up vitamin D last summer with DS2's asthma being so sensitive.

It has been widely reported as a difficult winter for illnesses.

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 05/04/2023 14:51

'What the fuck is going on' is covid.

Many viruses can dampen the immune system for a while after the acute illness. Covid is remarkably good at this, with dysregulation lasting up to 8 months (still uncertain, as more time passes, the period it is demonstrated to last gets longer)

So with covid in free circulation, with 3-5 peaks a year (and still pretty high background levels between peaks) there are going to be a lot of people getting it twice a year or more. Which means the immune system might not fully restore, thus leading to catching more illnesses and each illness being that bit worse.

Best thing to do is to step off the cycle of repeated covid infections (in addition, who wants to keep putting themselves at risk of long covid). So press for better ventilation (open windows, air filtration) and wear a mask when in crowded indoors spaces.

Laiste · 05/04/2023 13:49

What?!

Christ you can't moan about anything here in case someone else has it worse now?

My eyes are going to roll out of the back of my head !

(Soz to all those who can't roll their eyes obvs ...... 🙄)

Yep lol 🙄

That really made me laugh @Laiste 😂 And yes I have chronic, progressive illness and I STILL feel like I'm dying when I get a really shitty cold AND complain more about it than my actual serious illness 😂

SilhouettesOnTheShade · 05/04/2023 15:11

My poor toddler is on his 5th illness since November. He's currently sleeping on me having had another temp of 39. It's been between 39-40 for days now. He's got an ear infection and just a nasty virus. He was ill three times in his first 2 years. And in the last 7 months, 7 times😬

Seems to be everyone is struggling this winter😞

C1239 · 08/04/2023 16:47

How is everyone else managing to keep positive with the repeat colds/bugs? It’s starting to annoy me now

Oysterbabe · 08/04/2023 16:53

We've probably had slightly more bugs in the house than usual. I've been the most ill I've ever been recently, flu which turned into pleurisy. It's been more than 2 weeks and I'm not fully recovered.

DustyEmbroidery · 08/04/2023 16:54

@lipikar I agree we have had three incidences of illness since December and two of my friends families have been the same. I went to the Doctors for an annual review of a chronic condition recently and asked and my Dr said definitely worse and she thinks that peoples immune systems are a bit off currently.

C1239 · 08/04/2023 16:56

Im worried there’s something wrong because I seem to be picking up something every month or so , I shake it off then I get something else, it’s making me a bit anxious now ☹️

Inkanta · 08/04/2023 17:31

Yes OP same here. Since November it's been relentless. I went around 10 years without so much as a cold. I personally think it's some form of long covid.
