Gambling adverts…

stripeypetunias · 03/04/2023 12:09

Does MN really need to accept work from these sorts of exploitative companies?

I am sure there was a mother in here a few years ago whose DH committed suicide due to being hounded and re-ensnared by these companies, despite him trying to leave the addiction behind?

What does everyone think?

I’m fed up of the sex toy ads but the gambling ones are even worse!

YANBU gambling adverts should be illegal, and until that happens companies should have some morality in which ads they accept.

queenofthewild · 03/04/2023 12:13

YANBU. This is so insulting to the brave mumsnetter who has been campaigning so hard for change following the death of her DH

this ^
The ads are all over Twitter too.

stripeypetunias · 03/04/2023 12:24

@Albiboba I’m sure and late night tv shows too. It’s just that I like to think that mumsnet is better than all those other places…

I am pretty sure it's based on your searches.
I have no gambling ads on mumsnet.
Sites plop in ad banner which then works on your history afaik(note, it's doesn't have to be visits to gambling sites, but can be even articles about gambling etc)

Fairyliz · 03/04/2023 12:35

I’m not sure don’t people just scroll past? I’ve just checked my ads, the most recent one is for iPads at Argos. I don’t need a new iPad or indeed any technology so I just ignored it.

donttellmehesalive · 03/04/2023 12:39

Never seen a gambling ad on here. Is it based on your searches?

But surely MN still need to agree to those sites advertising on them?

And obviously if someone was a gambling addict then they'd be more likely to see the ads which is not helpful to them..

Now imagine in the past you had an addiction to buying ipads, it was a well known addiction, it has a devastating impact on people who struggle to control that addiction, and argos and other ipad retailers were well known for not complying fully with their responsibilities for ipad addiction.

Do you understand how addictions work?
If you tried to escape seeing anything about it and then all of a sudden it's thrown in your face it is very tempting.

On mumsnet I don’t think it is. Right now I have something to do with dyslexia and growing herbs. Never looked up a thing about either or even typed the words until now!

Should we bring back smoking ads then?

kitsuneghost · 03/04/2023 12:46

I particularly hate the daytime telly ones designed to specifically target lonely people.
Quite often these people are also unemployed or disabled with low income to boot

Also if you're within the demographic/categories set by the ad creators.
Ie you're in a certain location, certain sex, certain age, certain online behaviours, certain affiliations (eg public transport user etc)

Doingmybest12 · 03/04/2023 12:52

I have lot of on line gambling ones and as far as I know no one is gambling in this home. I have tried to monitor when these appear , like being linked to a certain type of thread but not sure if there is a pattern.

Doingmybest12 · 03/04/2023 12:54

I feel this strongly about celebs endorsing gambling on the TV and think about starting a twitter campaign about it. Ant and Dec looking at you .

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 03/04/2023 12:54

Mumsnet will allow a certain amount of ad blocks which are then filled with 'relevant' ads from search and display PPC.

The ads will be largely related to you as an individual (depending how good your privacy settings are) and can be targeted based on search history, characteristics, online affiliations, demographics, online behaviour etc.

If your privacy settings are fully set up you'll be served random ads that have very broad targeting settings.

I do believe that mn can choose to block certain ad types based on appropriate age range for example but things will and do slip through the cracks

StarlightLady · 03/04/2023 13:16

Sex toys are at the worst harmless on the other side of the spectrum they provide fun. I have no probs with the sex toy ads any more than any other ads. The purpose of advertising is to sell.

Gambling ads are another matter. I think they should be treated the same way as cigarette ads.

Festivemoose · 03/04/2023 13:16

YANBU

I’m getting gambling ads on this thread 😒

stripeypetunias · 03/04/2023 16:22

Interesting to hear how the ads work… no interest in many of the things personally. But I agree with @StarlightLady surely gambolling ads (delib spelt wrong to confuse the ad ppl!) should be banned like smoking adverts. They definitely shouldn’t be on mn in my view.

fwiw I see a huge range of ads with nothing much to link them up and I rarely use public transport. I also see ads for things written in a language in a country I haven’t visited for some years…!? Very odd!

The only thing that is on pointe (Sp?) is CONVERSATIONS I’ve had with people mentioning various things - no actual searches - nothing written down - however! Bingo - I see ads for related items. Hmm.

Yeah if you have any sort of device with sound recording capability (mainly phones and tablets) then it's very likely your privacy settings aren't as watertight as you'd like. They're crafty buggers in the world of digital.

Even if your settings are quite high, you'll be targeted with the broad search ads.

So for example if someone is selling 'blue jeans for women' and has a broad match on, their ad could be shown to you if you search for "blue tops for women", "jeans", "women's trousers", "blue hats for kids", "blue smurf costume" etc.

Then because you searched for blue smurf costume you'll be affiliated with "kids films", "comics", "Belgian media" etc and suddenly ads targeting those sorts of things will appear.

And round and round you go!

Nolongera · 03/04/2023 17:14

I use duckduckgo to access the forum as it prevents trackers.

I have never seen a gambling advert on here.

Wasn't there a politician a few years ago complained of seeing porn adverts and it was pointed out to him this was based on his internet usage?

OnedayIwillfeelfree · 03/04/2023 17:41

They will never be banned as the gambling industry brings so much revenue to the Governments coffers. The warnings are pathetic ‘Know your limits ‘ ‘Don’t gamble if you are upset’. If people had that much resolve they would not have an addiction. It’s like printing ‘maybe don’t drink today’ on all bottles of spirits to help alcoholics. The tragedy is that where alcoholics can avoid situations as they recover, it must be so difficult with gambling ads on TV every hour of the day. Even now, as I am watching the chase it is sponsored by a gambling company.

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 03/04/2023 17:44

Hate that Ray Winston promoted gambling.

G58 · 03/04/2023 17:46

I worked for William Hill and left it after seeing what a cut throat horrible organisation they were. They destroyed lives and were only concerned about how much money they made. They really do not care about their customers at all, beyond what they legally must.
