Do you get the Sunday scaries? What an odd phenomenon

I used to get it all the time and it definitely happens to me less now that I am in a job I love, but I get a really strange feeling on Sunday nights almost like dread of the end of the weekend. It’s hard to put it into words exactly, maybe somebody else who gets it can do a better job than I have. Sets in around 3/4pm if I’m going to get it and sometimes find myself unable to fall asleep no matter how tired when I don’t have that problem any other night of the week.

It’s absolutely fine by Monday morning, in fact I don’t even mind Mondays quite enjoy getting back to being busy. Weird

YABU - I don’t experience this

YANBU - I do, fairly regularly and ikwym

I like my job and still get it.

I’ve just changed my working pattern to not work Mondays any more and tomorrow is the start of it. It will be interesting to know if the dread creeps in Monday night instead.

wildlifeobserver1 · 02/04/2023 21:19

I used to when I didn’t like my job, but not anymore!

GobbieMaggie · 02/04/2023 21:21

Worked long days/nights since I was 21 so weekends have no meaning for me.

EnchentButteler · 02/04/2023 21:25

This is why I don't work on a Monday. It used to ruin my Sundays. And weirdly I don't get it on a Monday.

HereLiesBetelgeuse · 02/04/2023 21:26

We call it the Monday Doom
I get it even if I'm not working a Monday. It's just signals the beginning of another week of daily shite grind...get the school ironing done, school runs, packed lunches, work, living by the clock etc

Yeah and the Antiques Roadshow theme tune brings it on! Definitely a hangover from when I was a child.

I can hear the tune in my head now! Followed by songs of praise and last of the summer wine. The worst telly has to offer on a Sunday night.

I've not felt the dreaded back to school feeling in a long time. I love my job though and don't work Mondays, which I highly recommend! Not great in May with 3 bank holiday Mondays off though.

maddiemookins16mum · 02/04/2023 21:31

Just mentioned the Sunday blues to DMIL, she said it was always ‘Sing Something Simple’ that gave her the jitters for the next day 50 odd years ago (she was a District Nurse).

Yes, this! The theme tune absolutely fills me with anxiety and nostalgia and I can’t watch it. And I’m a grown adult with no homework I’ve forgotten to do and no PE kit that I never brought home for washing. It’s bizarre.

This is known as The Glenroes to Irish people of a certain age.

Grin

I don't get it these days but have in the past.

We work full time and have small children. On particularly trying weekends, Sunday night feels the way Friday used to Blush

Oh me too! Makes me feel sick!

HashBrownandBeans · 02/04/2023 21:41

I’ve always had it no matter what job I have. I’m currently in a new job and feel very unsettled so it’s worse than ever!

pompomdaisy · 02/04/2023 21:43

YABU- I never think about work until I wake up Monday morning.

Was going to say this!!

Alittlenonsensenowandthen · 02/04/2023 21:51

This thread is just making me miss Sunday TV!

But yes, I also get the dread and it's not even work related - I just start thinking of my various to do lists for the week.

PonyPatter44 · 02/04/2023 21:59

I have never had it before, because up until now I've been in challenging, interesting jobs that I've loved and looked forward to. Right now though, I am in a horrible job that I hate and that makes me cry most days, and my Sundays are AWFUL, with the prospect of having to walk back into that bloody office in the morning.

To anyone else suffering through the Sunday Scaries, I hear you.

Jacketspudtunamayo · 02/04/2023 22:12

I get Sunday downers. But not because I dread the Monday. Monday is my favourite day of the week surprisingly. But Sunday is my worst. They depress me, I get so lethargic, bored, drained. I despise Sundays with a passion.

FunnysInLaJardin · 02/04/2023 22:15

I dont really get it these days, but I do know the feeling.

I really enjoy my job, although do know I go to bed too late on a Sunday and so am always always tired on a Monday morning. I need to start work at 12pm really!

Luckingfovely · 02/04/2023 22:25

The Sunday Blues! Love what I do, love Mondays, yet my anxiety ramps up from lunchtime onwards till I'm borderline hysterical before bed and won't sleep a wink for many hours now.

Why? I wish someone could unpack this!

Hard relate to The Glenroes!

Ha ha you beat me to it

BewilderedPiskie · 02/04/2023 22:42

Both teachers in our house with a son at sixth form. Sunday jumpies felt by all though DH and I in the last year have found due to excess stress caused by poor management and dreadful student behaviour that it's kicking in from Saturday morning! Not sure such a lifestyle is really sustainable.😭

MyopicBunny · 02/04/2023 22:43

I used to get it when I was at school.

BonnyLassie99 · 02/04/2023 22:49

My American friend called it the “Sunday Sads” and I think it’s very normal, Sunday is my least favourite day of the week, there’s a sadness to it & I always feel lonely on a Sunday.

BadNomad · 02/04/2023 23:05

It was the Heartbeat theme tune that used to trigger it for me. 😭

JimmyDurham · 02/04/2023 23:13

Never had this while at work. Was a bit pissed that the weekend was over but that was about it. Used to get it every Sunday night when I was at school though.
