Do you get the Sunday scaries? What an odd phenomenon

I used to get it all the time and it definitely happens to me less now that I am in a job I love, but I get a really strange feeling on Sunday nights almost like dread of the end of the weekend. It’s hard to put it into words exactly, maybe somebody else who gets it can do a better job than I have. Sets in around 3/4pm if I’m going to get it and sometimes find myself unable to fall asleep no matter how tired when I don’t have that problem any other night of the week.

It’s absolutely fine by Monday morning, in fact I don’t even mind Mondays quite enjoy getting back to being busy. Weird

YABU - I don’t experience this

YANBU - I do, fairly regularly and ikwym

100%! In my house we call it the Sunday blues

Londre · 02/04/2023 20:47

I did but now found a new job. Don’t get it anymore and look forward to going to work

EezyOozy · 02/04/2023 20:49

I used to get it at high school, which I hated. I also got it on jobs I hated. By now I have a job I like and two small children so Monday is “my time” and I look forward to it!

Grapewrath · 02/04/2023 20:51

I like my job but get the Sunday scaries. They started when I went to a junior school. I absolutely hated it there. Also my dc 3 has additional needs and every school day was a battle so this didn’t help

MrsDoylesDoily · 02/04/2023 20:51

I always got the Sunday Scaries (love that phrase!) until I finally got a job I love and coincidentally I don't work on Mondays anyway (Saturday worker).

But it was always Songs Of Praise and Antiques Roadshow that triggered it!

LouLou198 · 02/04/2023 20:53

I used to, but now I'm self employed, so that feeling has gone! Smile

Ugh I have that today. Not dread but sometimes I get nervous about the week ahead and who I’ll be seeing or what meetings are on.

Warmcandle · 02/04/2023 20:06

Yes, from about 3pm it all becomes about ironing uniform, packed lunches, cooking a roast dinner, sorting out ironed clothes, and then thinking about the work I’ve got on. Again tho, actually don’t mind Mondays themselves 🙈

This is me, but I dropped the ironing about 6 months ago!! BlushSmile

UnsolicitedOpinions · 02/04/2023 20:55

Yes - I’ve had it since childhood too. Associate it with Antiques Roadshow, Songs of Praise, Bullseye and Mastermind!

I don’t work Mondays now, so I don’t really get it at the moment!

Cicily · 02/04/2023 20:56

And this thread has just reminded me to make my sandwiches for tomorrow!!

QueenOfThorns · 02/04/2023 20:56

Yes, I really struggle to get to sleep on Sunday nights and have no trouble the rest of the week. I’m not lying awake dreading the next day, I just can’t seem to go to sleep!

2023forme · 02/04/2023 20:56

@strawberryjeans - I hated living away from home when I first went to Uni so Sunday nights of dread started then as I had to leave home to go back. Continued through jobs I hated.

we have a friend and he had a job he hated so much, he used to get this feeling of dread on a Friday afternoon before he’d even finished up for the week!!

QueSyrahSyrah · 02/04/2023 20:57

Yep. Even if there's nothing especially on my mind about work I struggle to sleep well on a Sunday night; worse since I took a more responsible role.

I've now got a Sunday night routine in place to try and combat it (gentle TV, herbal tea, early to bed with lavender spray and a book).

Oldnproud · 02/04/2023 21:00

For me, this started from about the age of six or seven . A horrible feeling of impending doom deep in my gut that sucked any enjoyment out of Sunday afternoon and evening.

bizzywiththefizzy · 02/04/2023 21:01

For me it was when Onedin Line or Howards Way or some such rubbish ( in my opinion) came on on Sunday night , gulp it made me hate Sundays more . I really did hate School , I struggled .

imnotthatkindofmum · 02/04/2023 21:02

This is why I don't work Mondays. For some reason I don't feel it so much Monday night 🤷🏻‍♀️

I dislike my job sp I'm always stressed about it but this helps with the worst Sunday night stress! I have my day off to myself which I think helps, weekends with 3 kids aren't particularly relaxing!.

I'm a teacher so I also use my day off to do any extra work if necessary though I try not to but it does help me feel more "ready"

Peckhaminn · 02/04/2023 21:02

How weird, was just saying to my DP how I hate Sundays and as soon as the sun goes down I almost get Sunday depression! Even though I like my job

ActDottie · 02/04/2023 21:04

I used to when I had a manager that was bad for my mental health, now I have a better manager I actually look forward to Mondays :)

sweetdreamstenasee · 02/04/2023 21:05

Oh it's annoying isn't it? I

I work for myself, my upcoming week should be fairly easy and yet I still have it. I actually like Mondays and the feeling of a fresh new week.

I thought it was to do with drinking/hangovers at the weekend, but I've not had a drink in the last six months because I'm pregnant.

Maybe it's a muscle memory thing with me, like I've been programmed to feel this way since being a kid and having school the next day.

Whatisthisshitimwatching · 02/04/2023 21:05

I too used to have a Sunday bath, listen to the top 40, then my mum would dry my long hair in front of Last of the summer wine 😅That was as a young child, in my teens it was finishing homework and London’s burning on tv

Whatisthisshitimwatching · 02/04/2023 21:06

I don’t get it now as I’ve managed to deliberately work things so that I haven’t worked on Mondays for around 6/7 years.

LubaLuca · 02/04/2023 21:09

EggbertHeartsTina · 02/04/2023 20:07

Yeah and the Antiques Roadshow theme tune brings it on! Definitely a hangover from when I was a child.

Used to be the 'That's Life' theme tune for me.

I still get Sunday evening dread. I've been quite stressed at work recently, and the feeling of impending doom started as soon as my eyes opened this morning 😣
