School ski trip cancelled due to chaos in Dover - fuck the tories

1000 replies

TheColourofspring · 02/04/2023 10:57

My 15 year old son has just spent 17 hours in a coach in dover waiting to go on a much anticipated ski trip. It’s cost us over £1500 over a year and we hoped, given everything our kids lost over covid, it would be a positive experience.

The school just notified us to say that now- due to health and safety, drivers hours etc- the trip needs to be cancelled and the kids are on their way back from dover.

Absolutely FUCK the lying Tory cunts - they ruin everything. They try and blame the French yet all of this lies at their door. Fuck them all for ruining 100 kids trip (and probably thousands more) and ruining everything they touch with their stinking corrupt lies and their lies about brexit.

My son was in tears.

OP.
I really feel for these teens.

I'm seeing so many young people via my work who are struggling mentally and seeing the worry for their families.

Covid contained their lives at home, but they continued growing, just without the usualage related experiences.

And now, a fun thing, big event that really does add memories to the memory bank is now cancelled mid-journey and got to return home. No offense OP but you are probably not the place they want to be at (though the bed will be welcoming).
Another load of crapness.

Just as you think the barrel has been scraped... 🙄

Bit like your comment, I'm pretty glad I voted brexit if people like you suffer blaming all your woes on it and the conservatives.

People like me made the most of it so if you didn't only yourself to blame. 😁

Maireas · 02/04/2023 15:41

I agree, @MaryDerry - such a shame. No coach trip with teens is fun, but it doesn't matter when you have a destination. This just sounds like 15 hours of hell, followed by bitter disappointment.

Wonnle · 02/04/2023 15:42

From what i've read the ferry companies have booked 15% more coaches than they can handle !

That doesn't help create free flowing system does it plus everyone now has to have their passport checked and stamped .

anchorbuttercakes · 02/04/2023 15:42

@Maireas there's some amazing skiing to be had in Europe right now, not to mention the experience of getting away from UK to a different place with your school friends and teachers.

OP I’m so very sorry for your nephew and his schoolmates plus the teachers who will have spent much time planning this trip.

I agree except it’s not just the tories, I feel their just puppets and even if it was labour the same shit would be happening cos it’s about who the real power is behind the scenes

Who are they puppets for? Enlighten us who is pulling the strings in the background?

Sucks @TheColourofspring.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 02/04/2023 15:43

The ferry companies have all said that their checking in process is free flowing though. There isn’t a delay there. The ferry companies have the capacity to load at their normal rate. They haven’t got enough coaches to load purely because they are stuck the other side of border control

Interesting ...

On another note let's hope the travel insurance companies will pay out for all these ruined trips. With some uncertainty about the main cause of this and everyone blaming everyone else, it doesn't take a genius to imagine them working out something to avoid it

Oh so you agree that Brexit is something bad that you have to “make the best of” then?

Not at all I've never been so well of but thanks your concern 👍

RedEyeBaby · 02/04/2023 15:38

I don't know why you've got a bee in your bonnet arguing with me. I have organised many school trips from the UK to France and we always favoured a company that provides two drivers. A single driver means a cheaper quote but if they were an experienced company they would have known to expect delays during the Easter holidays. The law says they need to rest for 45 minutes every four hours, which with a single driver adds a lot of delay to the journey for the kids.
Pegasus is just one example of a coach company serving the uk-alps route that offers two drivers.
This thread is insane.

A 45 minute rest every 4 hours…. Great.

no need for a second driver though.

Villssev · 02/04/2023 15:46

Most school trips will want a break every 4 hours!

Yep! I thought exactly the same. This poster has similar vile form on other threads so clearly trolling is their pathetic hobby.
Oh and by the way @Sockloon, it is "you're so bothered." At least you have hopefully gained something positive from your post. 🤷

Villssev · 02/04/2023 15:48

@RedEyeBaby

In you first post you said that when you were a child your coaches had two trips

Now suddenly you have arranged “many school trips from UK to France” and all had two drivers

🤔

Nikkidolphin · 02/04/2023 15:51

That’s terrible. My son was also caught up in the chaos at Dover and stuck there for 10 hours. They got to their ski resort at 10 last night after leaving school lunch time on Friday. He would have been devastated if they’d turned round as it was 3rd time lucky for his trip and his last chance as he’s year 11. So sorry for your son. I hope he gets to go at some point.

Celeriacsoup · 02/04/2023 15:44

Oh, but it is worth it to show the EU and the French what we think of them.
Plus it means we have taken back control of our borders.

Nocutenamesleft · 02/04/2023 15:52

Is it not just the sheer volume of traffic though rather than Brexit?

Fifi1010 · 02/04/2023 15:53

If it was £1500 per child why aren't the school insisting on flights ? It's quicker.

midsomermurderess · 02/04/2023 15:53

Imagine being that person so smugly, horrifically Uriah Heepish that they call school kids going on a trip and being bitterly disappointed about it now not happening, entitled. ‘What an entitled thread!’. Imagine being that person, imagine having that person in your family.

MaryDerry · 02/04/2023 15:53

There might be 2 drivers. But neither may be getting in their proper rest break if messing around at the port, making it unsafe for the rest of the journey ahead especially if travelling through a few other countries.
I'm sure the decision to turn back won't have been lightly by them.

ThankmelaterOkay · 02/04/2023 15:53

Always wondered what would be the final straw for the Tories. Never thought it’d be Easter Ski Trip nightmares.

Its the final straw…right?????

It's coming up to Easter so it would be busier than normal I've crossed many borders in non EU countries, it's quicker to fly.

EarthlyNightshade · 02/04/2023 15:54

myoldmansatrendydustman · 02/04/2023 14:14

I never said that at all and please don't put words in my mouth.

Easter, like Christmas, is one of the busiest times for travel and this should be factored in when booking a trip anywhere.

Sorry for putting words in your mouth, I was trying to understand.

How should they have factored this in when booking the trip?

HannibalHeyes · 02/04/2023 15:54

So much revisionism going on! There was no "public demand" for a referendum. The EU (which actually protected us from much of the very kind of immigration that the racists voted against), was not an issue for the British people until the non-dom newspaper owners and Tory donors wanted to avoid having to pay tax on their hundreds of millions in this country. That led to a concerted campaign against the EU, which in turn led to the Tories insisting on a referendum in order to placate them.

And this has led us to the current shit show, ably assisted by Russian money and Social Media bots.

And to the numpty insisting that "the public" can do their own research - I presume she hasn't met many of "the public". They get all their information from the media, which was more than willing to print lies in order to get the result they wanted. And the BBC which was cowed into submission (where it's been ever since) by a simple threat to cut it's funding, and a craven editorial insistence on "balance" as opposed to "facts"...
