School ski trip cancelled due to chaos in Dover - fuck the tories

1000 replies

TheColourofspring · 02/04/2023 10:57

My 15 year old son has just spent 17 hours in a coach in dover waiting to go on a much anticipated ski trip. It’s cost us over £1500 over a year and we hoped, given everything our kids lost over covid, it would be a positive experience.

The school just notified us to say that now- due to health and safety, drivers hours etc- the trip needs to be cancelled and the kids are on their way back from dover.

Absolutely FUCK the lying Tory cunts - they ruin everything. They try and blame the French yet all of this lies at their door. Fuck them all for ruining 100 kids trip (and probably thousands more) and ruining everything they touch with their stinking corrupt lies and their lies about brexit.

My son was in tears.

No but it was a public reaction to what had happened previously. Surely everyone understands that?

No, it was some voters allowing themselves to be manipulated by a campaign that targeted the basest part of them. Jealousy, greed, fear, toxic nationalism etc.

Did you not see the heightened security after Munich terror attack

Bit different to Easter holiday traffic Hmm

I can go back many many years pre brexit

all number of reasons I am tesding

strikes
increased traffic
systems broken
immigrants

Floofyduffypuddy · 02/04/2023 15:08

@RedEyeBaby

😂😂😂

Your poor son and all his peers stuck. It's horrendous. It seems to happen at the beginning of every bloody holiday though? Always something somewhere. We are trying to get to Germany but trying to navigate Heathrow strikes and French air strikes. Trying to get away has become so stressful

The ferry companies have all said that their checking in process is free flowing though. There isn’t a delay there. The ferry companies have the capacity to load at their normal rate. They haven’t got enough coaches to load purely because they are stuck the other side of border control.

^^ That’s very interesting Another76543

I’m only going by what P&O and DFDS are posting on their Twitter feeds. They’re saying that their check-in is free flowing and as soon as coaches get to check in, they’ll be on the next sailing. There doesn’t seem to be a delay with loading. I suppose there might be an argument that if the coaches got processed quicker at border control, it might start to back up at check in.

Scyla · 02/04/2023 15:11

Those of us that stay at home over the Easter school holidays because of the sheer numbers of people heading out like lemmings all expecting to be served first and instantly at all times can smile to ourselves at our sensible planning.

Rosebel · 02/04/2023 15:11

Isn't it down to bad weather and high volume of traffic?
I'm not sure I'd want my 15 year old in France at the moment anyway. Still shit for your son though, must be so disappointing.

Floofyduffypuddy · 02/04/2023 15:11

@Villssev

Do you think these people need to pass a test to be able to vote? Or just banned from voting altogether.

Is being illiterate or having sen a sign of not being a critical thinker?
What scope and depth of research should one do to make such a descion?

@Villssev a poster claimed that there have been delayed every Easter at Dover, while the UK was in the EU.

I for one would be grateful if you could provide a link or links to evidence of this for each of the year the UK was in the EU.

Else there is a danger people will conculde that the claim is a bit like those on buses.

Oh don’t be daft

if you are illiterate how are you going to get to the nub of any political issue?

Why is the situation so much worse at the ferry terminals?

I have given the answer to this several times.

There is an optimum speed at which a ferry can be loaded.

The ship has to be stable when it sails that is called "trim".

Ferries have a draught of about 20 feet - ie that is the depth of the ship below the waterline. They have to put lorries and coaches in the hold to act as ballast. This causes the ship to sit lower in the water and makes it more stable. They have to do this first and do it evenly to keep the ship upright, They know how many lorries /coaches are booked but not necessarily exactly when they will arrive.
They cannot start loading cars unless they have a certain number of lorries on board or the ship would 'turn turtle'.
All lorries and coaches have to be chained down in the hold to stop them moving about. This takes time.

You could have 100 people checking passports but that won't speed up the loading. Travellers are advised to get to the terminal 90 mins before sailing during 'normal' times.

For those of you complaining about this all I have to say is "Herald of Free Enterprise"

I do hear what you’re saying. I know ferries take a while to load safely, and everyone would prefer a few hour delay to a compromise on safety.

I suppose there’s an argument that if border control processed the coaches more quickly, the coaches would then just end up waiting at check in and loading.

It’s probably a combination of border control inefficiencies and sheer volume of travellers. You’d think that the ferry companies would only accept bookings if they knew they could load them in time though. They surely know how many coaches are booked onto a given sailing and are confident that they could load all those booked in time, assuming they’ve turned up to the port in plenty of time.

Blueisthecolour1 · 02/04/2023 15:16

Ah that’s such a shame for your son, poor lad. You saved up for so long too. It’s such a disappointment for him, & all the kids. I do feel for him x

Well I posted two

but honestly…. Just Google

“Dover Easter delay - insert year”

and literally every year…. Delays over Easter

🙄 the public wanted a referendum, the government gave the public a referendum, the public voted for Brexit. That’s called democracy, like the outcome or not.

The public didn't want a referendum. The ERG and UKIP wanted a referendum and Cameron was willing to gamble the entire country for the sake of the Tory party's psychodrama.

HappyValet · 02/04/2023 15:16

Thatladdo · 02/04/2023 12:05

Oh Dear.
Heres a tissue - it would be more accurate to blame to majority of the population who voted for it not the political party who were duty bound to impliment it.
Very bad planning on your schools part to travel on a known extreemly busy time of year expecialy with the added troubles in France at the moment.

The Brexit referendum was the product of divisions in the Tory party. It doesn’t seem to have healed the divisions either. So of course it’s their fault.

My DS was one of the “lucky” ones. After a 12 hour queue at Dover and an unplanned stop over he has arrived on his holiday 24 hours late.

So sorry for your DS Op.

As an aside, I do a lot of work with the Farming community and know several Farmers who can't read and write but have more brains and life experience in their little finger than even a very politically aware me with my 2 degrees and a postgrad.

Floofyduffypuddy · 02/04/2023 15:21

So you do want a test before people can vote and you don't think illiterate people can know their minds or see what's going on or get information any other way??

Funny how the Tories and their voters aren't so keen to take responsibility for breaking the UK.🙄

Clearly it didn’t require two drivers

otherwise… there would have been two drivers on board 😂

Then that's a consequence of the school booking a cheaper coach service.

Ineedwinenow · 02/04/2023 15:23

I got stuck in the 2013 and 2014 Easter delays at Dover/Calais ( I was a sucker for punishment back then) There is a delay most years around this time unfortunately and prior to 2016 we couldn’t blame brexit! Those two years I travelled were miserable and vowed to never travel again at Easter 😆

Sorry about your son I hope you can get some money back
