To think 32.5 hours is full time?

I'm at work 35 hours a week (5 x 7 hour shifts) with a 30 minute break, so technically it's 32.5. AIBU to think this is full time work?

Was out with some of my mum friends the other night and was straight up told how "it must be quite nice to have part time work even though the DC are in secondary school". My DC are in secondary school yes and I'm working full time because of that? (Not implying people have to of course, but it's full time surely?)

My 36 hours is classed as full time, i work 37.5 but paid 36.

Nat6999 · 31/03/2023 23:09

It would be better if there wasn't such a divide between full & part time workers. I worked 18 hours but when I got home had to do at least 35 hours a week for my disabled then husband so in effect I worked at least 53 hours a week. I used to get comments like are you going home to put your feet up or it can't be bad, going home to sunbathe, when in reality I was going home to sort out a husband who was more like a 21 stone toddler, probably have wet himself several times, maybe needed picking up off the floor or needed help with his physiotherapy. Most people work however many hours they need to earn enough money to live yet to try & still have some kind of life.

MiniDinosaur · 31/03/2023 23:11

35hrs (7hrs x 5 days) is full time here. Nobody can be more productive working 48 hr weeks.

LadyLapsang · 31/03/2023 23:21

It’s definitely part time.

KnickerlessParsons · 31/03/2023 23:25

I work full time and I do 35 hours a week, just like everyone else where I work.

Bellie710 · 31/03/2023 23:26

I'm at work 35 hours a week with 0 breaks and I am classed as part time.

No breaks? That’s not legal, surely? Are you in the U.K.?

Bayleaf25 · 31/03/2023 23:30

37 hours is full time to me so apart from 2 hours I’d say you are full time.

dizzygirl1 · 31/03/2023 23:32

ADHDadvice · 31/03/2023 20:37

37 is standard in the whole of Civil Service as full time

32.5 would be classed as part time.

Exactly as this poster. Any breaks are unpaid, so it's 37.5 hrs plus your 30 min breaks =40 hrs for a full time week. I used to work 32 hours, it was part time.

AngelineGarcia · 31/03/2023 23:41

36.5 is full time where I work. Lunch breaks aren’t included in that.

PrettyMaybug · 31/03/2023 23:41

It's not full time. It's almost full time, as some jobs have full time positions that are 35 hours a week, 9 to 5 (with an hour lunch.) It IS classed as part time though 32 hours. Does seem odd to label it part time, as it's ALMOST full time. What else can we call it though?

Morewineplease10 · 31/03/2023 23:42

At my company full time is 35 hours. Your hours are practically full time in my view!

Ignore daft comments like your friend made. A few hours is by the by really.

PousseyNotMoira · 31/03/2023 23:27

Yip 100% not legal but well paid so we all kind of go with it at the moment but not sustainable.

We can pretty much pick and choose when we are on holiday, and can also tell the bss what we are doing but still totally wrong.

SazCat · 31/03/2023 23:49

We get paid for breaks so we don't take them into account, full time is 40 hrs. I do 3 days which is 24 hours, and to 4 days soon which will be 32 hours - classed as part time. I guess the difference is you do 5 days tho

it doesn’t matter what peopke on here consider full or part time. It’s in relation to what your place of work considers full time and therefore if you work less than that you are part time. My company considers 35 hours to be full time, I work 28 hours a week so therefore o get paid 28/35 of a full time salary, it is irrelevant if Sue on mumsnet says 40 hours is full time or 32 hours is full time because you are paid in relation to what your company considers full time.

This is clearly correct, and I think it's not just in terms of pay but in terms of what it 'feels like' that the only really relevant factor is what is the norm where you work. I work 32 hours a week which is 0.89 for us, but because I compress them it means I only work four days a week - so that definitely feels part-time, there's a day that everyone in my team except me works. In my workplace if you worked 7 hours then you'd presumably be getting in later or leaving earlier than nearly everyone else so again it would 'feel' part-time. If this is the standard working pattern where you work then neither of those will apply.

SD1978 · 31/03/2023 23:54

But it's not. Close to, but not. Also don't see why anyone else would give a crap

Runnerduck34 · 31/03/2023 23:54

Where I work 37 hours excl lunch breaks is full time.
DH full time contract is 36 hours, excl lunch and DSs full time contract is 40 hours ,excl lunch
So I'd say 32.5 hours is part time but only roughly an hour a day less than full time, and the way your hours are spread out over 5 days it probably feels pretty full time - although you'd probably feel the extra hour per day if worked standard full time hours-
I think your shorter days sound fab!

Xmasbaby11 · 31/03/2023 23:54

It is technically part time but nearly ft so really, hardly any difference. It’s what, 90%?

I work 28 h per week on a 80% contract, but over 4 days so I have Fridays off. I usually tell people that if needed .. at my work there’s anything from 40 to 100%.

Hardbackwriter · 31/03/2023 23:55

I also think that your friend (who should maybe mind her own business in general!) may be interpreting your shift pattern as you being more part-time than you are. I think she sees you having either mornings or afternoons off and thinks that you're basically working half-days, which isn't true at all given your start/finish times.

imnottoofussed · 01/04/2023 00:03

I operate payroll for a number of companies and most full time are either 37.5 or 40 hours. I guess it depends on what your company says. If most employee contracts are more than yours then you're not full time.

caringcarer · 01/04/2023 00:15

I think 37 hours or more is classed as full time. You work part time but as working every day it probably feels like full time work.

caringcarer · 01/04/2023 00:19

@bonkersbirdie, but Teachers are also on site for more than those hours. Before school duty, lunch duty, after school bus duty and not to mention most Teachers go straight back to their rooms and either mark work or lesson prep. Teachers mostly do double number of hours contracted each week.

GrannyWeatherwax23 · 01/04/2023 01:40

40 hours a week is considered full time. 35 hours a week is plenty to work however and should be the goal for everyone.

lifekeepsgoing · 01/04/2023 05:40

As a teacher my contract is 30 hours a week. I start at 7.50 and finish at 3.15 with one hour ten for breaks. Yes you work full time. I am on site for over 7 hours a day, it's a full day of work.

Is thar rubbish? Does that mean they have to make up the rest of the time unpaid?

Yes…. If you work it out properly we’re actually paid power than minimum wage
