Pregnant sick leave and inappropriate messages from boss!

Currently heavily pregnant and signed off for a couple of weeks with various issues.

My boss has made it clear he isn't happy about it. I emailed him yesterday to say I was hoping to be back next week, all being well, and he replied to say that spending a week with my team has highlighted many things that need to be implemented and that it had been interesting.

For context he's been most 'off' with me basically since finding out I was pregnant.

I'm quite upset by this message. My team are high performing, I'm very conscientious and work very hard.

I assume the message is meant to make me anxious or worry (well at least that's the effect it has had).

AIBU to think this is really out of order? Or just being sensitive?

Had something similar happen in October. I was signed off at 36 weeks. My boss ignored all my messages for 3 weeks 🙄

As they should have done. Why were you messaging when you were too unwell to work? Your situation is the opposite of @sadfacesmileys.

a call to ask about welfare and any idea on return to work is standard practice

No this isn’t correct. If he has concerns about her work, it should be discussed when back. Not implied while signed off! Nothing to do with being pregnant.

Pregnant Then Screwed might be worth checking with - boss is being an arse - deeply unreasonable to engage in this type of stuff when someone is off sick. Mind yourself OP Flowers

It's sad what women have to go through in the workplace. We can't even be pregnant in peace. Most of the time the oppression is coming from the men.

For me personally, no boss of mine will make me feel guilty/uncomfortable at for being pregnant or sick. I wont accept it, I know my rights. I am especially happy that I work for a large company who has a great external HR department.

That's such a horrible message to send to your employee given the circumstances.

Please start taking notes of conversations and a timeline of interactions with this manager. You may need it for constructive dismissal claim. Best to get your ducks in a row so when you do have a conversation with him you are prepared and not blindsided and on the back foot to get ‘evidence’ that your team performs.

I was signed off for pelvic pain (I wanted to work but my GP said I had unsafe working conditions) - I was told by my union if I wanted to talk to my team and manager to relay some important information, I could. My manager was just being rude as he knew this was the case. I have a role which requires a thorough handover.

If you have a supportive union and HR then you should know that sick leave is led by the employee and what the employee feels comfortable doing - not by a handbook.

If it's a medium or large company with staff above him, HR will absolutely rinse him if they hear about this.
My old line manager was sacked for similar (but the person was long term sick rather than pregnant)

I think the timing was inappropriate, it could have waited, he should have brought it up in your next one to one.

But a manager commenting that some things need to be addressed in the workplace is perfectly appropriate if that is what they have noticed.
