Is this 'middle' or 'working ' class

FarmerSamon · 30/03/2023 13:07

Back in 2013, I put on Facebook that I'd just shopped at a local weekly outdoor farmer's market set up in our area, and I was proud of myself for buying local, fresh, produce from a small, local, independent retailer - all locally sourced food in paper packaging - not a nasty piece of plastic in sight!! I put a status to this effect on Facebook - yes smug I know.

My Fb friend commented that this sounded 'very middle class' and I said - no you could argue it's more 'working class' as working class people are more likely to have jobs in the primary industries - so I'm supporting the local economy

Any thoughts ?

Very smug which is in turn very middle class. Very pricey compared to budget supermarket own brand which in turn is also very middle class.

Abcdefgh1234 · 30/03/2023 15:09

Is it important?? 😂😂

are you rich enough to be considered middle class or not?

i’l earns six figures and still considered myself working class. Because i’m not posh looking. Lots of people here really wants to fit in the middle class categories, really trying to look posh and act posh and speak RP, but doesnt have any money to help them to do it. So they really struggling trying ti be middle class.

i dont think its important anymore to be honest. Even when i’m earning millions in the future i still considered myself a working class.

Glad you put that you know you are smug at the end.
This post is just so obnoxious you must have made it up.

If someone is shouting, "paaaand a paaand yer bananas, come and get them while they're banana-shaped" it's WC to be there and shop there.

If it's artisanal goats cheese soap, it's MC.

But then look, realistically -

We're all told by the media etc to look after the environment - which arguably shopping locally does

Also, people are often critical of these large, global, multinationals and are genuinely sad when they put small, local butcher etc. - out of business - I saw this happen with Sainsbury's years ago near where I live.

So surely my post contains good intentions ?

If I ever shop at a farmer's market I make sure to do a shop at Iceland within the next few days. Similarly if I ever get a coffee from an independent café that uses ethically sourced coffee beans, I always get a sausage roll from Greggs after.

It's a perfect way to avoid any troublesome 10-year identity crises.

Lol - thing is, in relation to your first paragraph - someone was shouting that in my house - that was exactly the way my ex spoke - 'wosser ma'er wivvya?' Grin

But yes goats cheese soap is very middle class

There is no wrong time for Greggs sausage rolls. Did you see the nativity scene with one as Jesus? Priceless.

Are you my aunty?
She talks like that.
With absolutely no understanding whatsover that so many people just cannot afford the prices of "Farmers' Markets". People are scraping pennies together to buy a bag of carrots from Aldi or the cheapest pasta there is and then we have others with their smug posts on facebook bragging about how great they are helping the environment and so on, often with accompanying pictures of their "haul" of artisan bread, organic shallots and who knows what.

I find it unbearable how a certain section of society (I'm not assuming this applies to you OP), are suddenly preaching to us about the climate change emergency and how we need to buy locally-sourced produce, not wrapped in plastic; swap cars for electric vehicles; consume less and so on and so forth.
All of these things are driving prices up and up making life for the poorer people ever harder and those poorer people were not the ones flying around all over the place and polluting willy nilly until just a couple of years ago when it became "cool" to display green credentials.

You went to a farmer's market 10 years ago. I don't think Greta has any competition just yet.

roarfeckingroarr · 30/03/2023 15:35

It comes down to cost and choice. Being able to prioritise the latter is a privilege of the middle class.

FarmerSamon · 30/03/2023 15:43

@Ganlonz - fair enough. I'm honestly holding my hands up here and saying I feel I may've used the term 'Farmers' Market' inadvertently in a misleading sense. To be honest, it's possibly that at the time it wasn't even marketed as a 'farmer's market.' So I'll ditch the term 'farmer's market' and say -

It was an outdoor market every Friday set up in the town's local shopping area. It was arranged and promoted by the county council. The stalks would appear in a different major town within the council boundaries each day of the week presumably to circulate the. county's produce to as many people as possible. So on reflection, I don't think it was a traditional farmer's market in the way that people think of. To be fair it was excellent though .. the produce was delicious

And of course smug posting is actually terrible for the environment. Social media is a huge power drain.

Yeah, I’d think you were a smug middle class so and so with not much going on in your life if you posted this.

guess it depends how it was done but the way you talk about being proud of yourself makes it sound smug rather than just promoting a supplier

OK, fair enough. It was a normal market.
Some of us have been shopping in normal markets for the last 40 years without posting about it on facebook.

There is no class involved in your post or thread whatsoever. Just a rather foolish status that’s aged poorly in the last 10 years.

Fifi1010 · 30/03/2023 16:05

A lot of farmers markets are wanky with the artisan aspirational branding. Olives aren't grown here. I'm betting a lot of the wanky artisanal cheeses with fancy packaging are not locally sourced or the deli meats which many are protected and imported from Spain and Italy 🤣🤣. To actually go local you go to your local farm and ask for their produce ,it doesn't come in wanky packaging but it's nice. Still get your antipasti from Waitrose as there's little difference still imported and it's cheaper.

NurseCranesRolodex · 30/03/2023 16:12

Interested to know why this seems to be bothering you now. You do say that your post sounded smug and you're right. Unless you're genuinely interested in promoting the market for the benefit of the farmers, traders and for locals to gain feedback and hopefully go along themselves, boosting the local economy then it seems virtue signalling wank.

Surely it's obvious that your experience of the whole thing and the fact you live somewhere that hosts a farmers market answers your class question.

Is this a Journalism dissertation question?

BellaJuno · 30/03/2023 13:14

Farmers markets are achingly middle class to me - a stereotypical working class market would be one that Pete or Ian Beale worked at (totally showing my age!!)

@BellaJuno I thought exactly that

DoTrollsShitInTheThreads · 30/03/2023 16:17

The pertinent question is
Have you been using the farmer's market regularly for the last 10 years?

CocoFifi · 30/03/2023 16:31

if you work; you are working class! This snobbery makes me laugh. I know people that look down on others, as they think having the right car, wearing the right clothes, living in a bigger house, going to certain shops, makes them superior. Most of these people are in debt up to their eyeballs and the people they look down on own everything outright
