Is this 'middle' or 'working ' class

FarmerSamon · 30/03/2023 13:07

Back in 2013, I put on Facebook that I'd just shopped at a local weekly outdoor farmer's market set up in our area, and I was proud of myself for buying local, fresh, produce from a small, local, independent retailer - all locally sourced food in paper packaging - not a nasty piece of plastic in sight!! I put a status to this effect on Facebook - yes smug I know.

My Fb friend commented that this sounded 'very middle class' and I said - no you could argue it's more 'working class' as working class people are more likely to have jobs in the primary industries - so I'm supporting the local economy

Any thoughts ?

Yeah I suppose the other aspect is, at an educated guess, w/c people are more likely to stay and work close to the area they grew up in - m/c are more likely statistically to move away. So buying local is supporting w/c

Literally no. That’s ridiculous. I don’t live where I grew up but I start making jam now and selling it then it’s “local” jam and you’re supporting the “local” economy by buying it. The wine bar down the road from me is owned by a guy from Italy. It’s still a “local” business. There’s no indication that local businesses are from people who were born and raised locally, let alone that those people are working class.

What is this whole 'middle class' nonsense? At the risk of sounding like a GCSE student, as far as I'm concerned there are only two classes, the working class and the non working (rich) class. If you work for a living, you are working class, that's it, no need to divide ourselves up further.

Unrealistic POV, imo. There's a vast difference between the life experiences and struggles of a person working every hour god sends at Asda to make rent, and a GP or consultant working at their job. Yes, they both work, but to say they are in any way of the same social class is ridiculous.

queenofthebongo · 30/03/2023 13:26

Are people confusing a market with a farmers market?

Where I am from, the market is up on a Saturday selling cheap fruit and veg, meat and cheese, clothes, hoover parts. It's working class.

The farmers market sells expensive meat and cheese, artisan breads and olives and it is super expensive. Middle to upper class.

I'm middle class now I think, and I can't/don't want to afford the farmers markets!

I could be wrong but I think, statistically, working class people work fewer hours than middle class people. The entire definition is somewhat blurred.

I'd just shopped at a local weekly outdoor farmer's market

I was proud of myself for buying local

fresh, produce from a small, local, independent retailer

all locally sourced food in paper packaging

local producers/traders visit a different town in the county each day

showcase and sell local produce

Think we need you to confirm if it's local produce before we comment...

Freespiritwannabe · 30/03/2023 13:31

Being aware of economics and environmental issues was very middle class in 2013.

And then you go ahead and buy the produce and post about it smugly.... 2 extra middle class behaviours.

Like a game of "middle class bingo"

This is astonishing, you are talking about something inconsequential a decade ago and you posted on face book you were proud of yourself as you bought something at the local market?

bloody hell.

Fifi1010 · 30/03/2023 13:32

No working class people generally only shop at supermarkets cause it's what they can afford. I sometimes go direct to farmer as I live very close to one which isn't really anymore expensive than super markets . Farmers markets are way more expensive than direct farmers as people think it's fancy etc.
If you want cheapish and good go directly to the farmer.

HappinesDependsOnYou · 30/03/2023 13:32

Supporting local businesses has nothing to do with class. You can be a billionaire and still buy local produce at your local farmers market or buy clothes from a charity shop. What divides the classes is the job you have and the income. Farmers markets are more expensive then Aldi or Lidl or regular markets so it's is more likely middle class people shop there then working class as they have a bigger disposable income. Working class are not banned from there so you might be working class attending a farmers market but if you are then you are likely the minority

Everanewbie · 30/03/2023 13:32

I just can't assign a class to myself, I expect there are similar people out there. I like and do some things that are traditionally seen as working class, but also enjoy some middle class things. Possibly have higher income than an average working class, but not the trust fund and leg ups enjoyed by traditional middle class. Just do what you want to do, no need for a label.

Honestly though,

I bought something from a local market a decade ago. Was this a middle class act or a working class one.

😂

This its the not the base products you would get from a farm🤣🤣. I love olives and cheese but I hate the way they put artisan label on to increase the price by 50 percent.

This has been playing on your mind for a decade?

Middle class to do it as part of your weekly shop.

Working class to post on FB about it. Dead giveaway and awfully gauche OP!

If you go to a market and there isn't a butchers van with a loud haler yelling out the bargains for the day with no mention of the words "grass fed" it's middle class.

MintMa · 30/03/2023 13:41

Beyond middle class (with or without Morton Harket)

Decade old anecdotes are best when they involve some juicy sex details or a confession of criminal wrongdoing.

😂 dogging in the tractor for some local sausage? Followed by a saucy joy ride and an organic cabbage?

Megifer · 30/03/2023 13:46

No its not middle class to shop at a farmers market. At all. Its definitely aspiring middle class to post about it to tell everyone though.

More importantly, this was 10 years ago, why are you still thinking about this go and eat some quinoa or something 🤣
