FluffyUnionSocks · 30/03/2023 12:42

For March so far not including tomorrow’s shopping delivery of £230, I have spend £970 on groceries this month. Including tomorrows shop the last of the month the grand total will be £1200! Wtf this time last year it was about half that amount.
How much are you all spending? We are a family of 5 the 3 kids are aged between 11-16.

There’s only 3 of us. I was spending about £120-£130 a week at Tesco. I’ve recently swapped to mostly Aldi and cut down the spending to about £80-£90 a week.

RockyReef · 31/03/2023 21:20

We don't spend quite as much as you, but I reckon I spend £100 every 4 days on shopping so almost £800 a month, that includes basic toiletries, cleaning stuff and dog & cat food. We are a family of 4, 2 adults, 2 children (12 & 9). We're all very outdoorsy and into loads of sport so I guess maybe we eat more than other people, the children certainly eat way more than their friends who are much more sedentary (my kids are out training every night and play football in the garden every spare hour they are at home). We eat pretty healthily which has a cost implication (it would be far cheaper to buy processed freezer food for every evening meal than to buy the fresh ingredients and cook from scratch as I do). We eat a lot of fresh fruit and veg too which is pricey. A year ago we were spending no more than £400 per month, and often only £300, on groceries so it's more than doubled over the last year. We haven't changed what we eat particularly, as we buy a lot of value range things anyway, and don't eat a lot of meat. I'm shocked at how much food has gone up in such a short amount of time.

nocciola · 31/03/2023 21:22

We spend between £70- £80 a week. For 2 adults, teenage ds and cat. That's everything- inc fruit, lots of it- mostly veggie/vegan, packed lunches, cleaning products etc and some snacks for ds.
I shop to a meal plan, we cook from scratch and eat really well. I tend to shop online, as if in store with dh we spend loads more. I always check for whats on offer. Mostly Tesco and once a month lidl for pasta, olive oil etc.

3WildOnes · 31/03/2023 21:27

Jesus christ that is so much. I spend about £400 for a family of five, though mine are younger and only one has a packed lunch. Her packed lunch is a sandwich, either cheese, smoked salmon or ham, an apple or banana & a little pot with hummus and veg sticks. Her lunches probably work out at about £6 per week.
Fruit I buy apples, bananas, Satsumas and a pineapple fresh and then I buy berries and mango frozen. Mango I use for smoothies and berries in porridge or smoothies.
Breakfast is porridge or cereal or toast in the week. Pancakes or cooked breakfast on the weekend. I am one if those people who can make a large chicken last for three meals so that will do us a Sunday roast, a chicken and veg stir fry and a chicken and sweet potatoe curry. Then we would usually have spag bol one night, sausage potatoes and veg another, pizza and salad and then salmon potatoes and veg another.
Snacks, I buy a couple if packs of biscuits, a few packs of crackers, and a couple if multipacks of crisps (whatever is in offer usually). They mostly have toast or crumpets and milkshakes made with bananas and frozen berries for snacks though.

£400 a month for a family of 6. 8 month old twins so this includes formula and nappies. And 2 hungry teens. What on earth are you eating?

BlueJellycat · 31/03/2023 21:41

Under 400 for 6 of us because I don't have much option

Kinniewins · 31/03/2023 21:45

Not sure if other people have mentioned this.

I’ve tried all the recipe boxes, and would definitely recommend gousto for a family, it’s about £50 for a large box for 2 adults 3 children. You can get discounts from topcashback etc too. You could do that, then top up snacks and pack lunches from there either with online shop or through Aldi etc.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 31/03/2023 21:55

We average £800 a month which includes alcohol, top up shops. And that’s averaged across the year. Slightly less when the dses are at university but more in the holidays.

It’s a lot of money! DH bought 3 packs of penguin biscuits today for £7!!

Unhappy53 · 31/03/2023 21:55

Just worked out we have spent £958 in March for two adult humans, two cats and two dogs. It’s outrageous isn’t it? 🤬

AnnieSnap · 31/03/2023 22:22

BansheeofInisherin · 30/03/2023 12:56

You are not doing anything wrong. Other people have different food habits, dont have teens, don't eat meat or don't drink.

I agree with you. That said, our £958 in March for two of us and 4 small pets doesn’t include alcohol (we don’t drink) or meat/fish (we’re vegetarian). We cook all our food from scratch though and I’ve heard processed foods are cheaper than those made from fresh ingredients.

Butterwicky · 31/03/2023 22:31

About £100 a week for 2 adults, 2 kids & a dog. Half the humans are vegetarian and only one drinks alcohol. We shop at Aldi and Asda.

Thatladdo · 31/03/2023 22:33

"Sorry but, wtf are the two of you eating?"

Fresh fruits, meat, just general quality stuff.
I dont look for cheap stuff or offers I just pick stuff up.
In my defence I dont drink or smoke either, pet food would add another easy 150 onto that.

Alternately, if i smoked 20 a day and drank a £5 bottle of wine a night that could easy counter that with £465 and we could eat cheap low quality food and knacker our health.
You pay your money, you takes your choices..

MummyBee40 · 31/03/2023 22:40

2 adults, 2 teenagers (18 & 13) and 2 children (9 & 11) I spend £500 a month at Waitrose. (That includes toilet paper, kitchen roll, Dreft washing powder etc)

I cook from scratch a lot and take advantage of the 2 for £8 meat deal quite a lot too.

We eat very well, things like jambalaya, jerk chicken with rice and peas (peas are kidney beans), risotto, fish every Friday (Plaice, lemon sole, cod etc) steak a couple of times a month, beef casserole, pie & mash, roast dinner every Sunday, a full English once a month etc.

I also have £100 a month on top of that in my budget for the treats shopping. We don't always necessarily need to use that whole £100 but it's for things we don't eat all the time; sweets, stuff for movie nights - popcorn, ice cream, big share bags of crisps, snacks or we might use it for a takeaway etc.

Stuff like toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, misc sundries etc I buy as and when from either Savers or Wilko if they're not on offer at Waitrose.

But not all cheap food is low quality
I mean if I had the money I would be buying prawns, sushi, more exotic fruit and veg etc

But I don't so I manage. But I still eat fruit and veg (wonky, frozen, in season, cheaper stuff), decent meat (high quality sausages etc), nice cheese, greek yoghurt. Tend to pick plain tortilla chips over crisps for the sake of less additives
Probably the only cheaper thing I buy that isn't the best is cooked meat for sandwiches and mayo

I don't drink or smoke either but it's a bit.. when someone says you choose, on min wage I can't afford £900 on food

Family of 4 at home - about the same

No way! How is that even possible? What donYOU eat? Air? Rice cakes? I spend that in a week for 4 including cleaning and household stuff.

Good God, what a tremendous waste of money. Do you not ever just fancy a simple meal? You must be eating a huge amount of expensive processed convenience foods to spend that on one adult and one child.

Fedupdoc · 01/04/2023 00:06

About £400 pcm for 2 adults and a 7 year old
my daughter has school dinners but this includes lunches for adults
i do 2 x online shops fortnightly for approx £150-170 and then some top up bits in between
we eat a lot of fruit, but don’t drink much of buy many packaged snacks. Sometimes this is slightly higher if I’ve used up lots of cupboard staples

Zerrin13 · 01/04/2023 00:34

I dont track what I spend and I dont have a food budget but its easily £1,000 a month. Husband and I, son 19, daughter 18, little dog. I find it disgusting to be honest but I dont have much say in it. If they don't all get what they want to eat they complain and moan that life is too short to eat cheap basic food! My husband is the worst. He likes lamb 3 times a week.

verdantverdure · 01/04/2023 00:35

I can t see how food inflation will fall while we pay the highest electricity prices in the world in the U.K. and Brexit causes staff shortages and delays that add cost to everything.

Just had a shock, how much do you spend on groceries a month?
Mamanyt · 01/04/2023 00:41

I am by myself. I run between $100-$150 USD, but I have a VERY boring, restricted diet. Take supplements. I do NOT recommend it.
