To buy a new pram?

We still have our Ocarro that we bought in 2017 for our first DD, we would just need to give it a good clean as hasn't been used since 2020 I would say and buy a new car seat. I'm assuming it's all still fine to use otherwise?

We are now expecting our 2nd, MIL kindly said if we were buying a new pram she would pay half and we have looked at getting a Flip XT3. I also have vouchers from work to put towards it I got, to cover the rest essentially.

AIBU to be buying a new pram at all?

With my insomnia currently it's playing on my mind alot.

Have you seen the pram refurbishment companies? They can make them look basically brand new and you save the cost of the new pram plus it's better for the environment. I'd look into that first and save the vouchers for something else.

Roselilly36 · 30/03/2023 05:05

I would get a new pram OP.

somuchtolearnabout · 30/03/2023 05:08

Life's too short. Get the pram

Anonx · 30/03/2023 07:49

No idea why I almost feel guilty for potentially getting one!

I wouldn't but then I don't feel the need to buy everything brand new. Waste of money and not great for the planet.

Desperatelywantinganother · 30/03/2023 07:56

I’d consider getting a different sort of pram/buggy that complements the one you already have. So maybe one that folds up tiny for car/plane trips. Or one that does proper off road terrain well or that you could go jogging with.

Thoughtful2355 · 30/03/2023 08:13

i personally would never spend over £350 for a pram, dont see the worth BUT its up to you what you buy.

StylishM · 30/03/2023 08:37

Waste of money IMHO. Prams and travel systems are a license to print money, I've just bought a second hand iCandy for £120 off FB marketplace, it's pristine and cost the owner over £1400 new. I've said £1280 on the cost of new, and all I've had to do is put the fabrics through the washing machine. What else could those vouchers go towards?

Wrongsideofpennines · 30/03/2023 08:40

I wouldn't but would probably get a new carseat to go with the travel system. Our pram was the only thing we bought brand new though.

But if you feel like your pram doesn't fit your lifestyle now then I can see why you might want to. Sell or gift your old one on so someone else can use it it there's nothing actually wrong with it.

Makingamess4212 · 30/03/2023 08:47

I wouldn't, only reason being that the flip XT series are a lesser pram than the ocarro! If you already have a top of the range pram why buy a "sh*tty version" ? I was recently in mamas and papas, having a push at all the prams. The flips basket is so much smaller than the ocarro and its rickety when pushing. Give your ocarro a good clean and get a new car seat.

PurBal · 30/03/2023 08:48

I wouldn’t. Just put the covers in the washing machine.

Emilyanna · 30/03/2023 09:29

If you hated the Ocarro, or you have different needs now (like you've moved to a rural area and now need all terrain or something) then yes, get a new pram that suits your needs. Or a second hand one.
If the Ocarro is fine, but just a bit muddy, use it again. Think of the planet!
Prams don't have an expiry date. We got ours on marketplace, second hand 2014 model. I walk at least five miles a day and it was heavily used when we got it. It's absolutely fine. It hasn't melted because it's eight years old 🤷

Bunnyhascovidnoteggs · 30/03/2023 09:37

Multiple dc here. Lots and lots of hand me downs. Always had a new pram though. Nowt like pushing your new baby in a new pram ime!

halfshutknife · 30/03/2023 09:41

This probably makes me sound mental...
Get the pram. Get the one you want.

I had the occaro and hated it but used it for both. I now have massive pram envy and know I'm not having another baby so can never get it.

Obviously the main issue is never having another baby but I also feel cheated at never having the pram I want 😂😂😂

gogohmm · 30/03/2023 09:43

I wouldn't unless the current one doesn't meet your needs. Seems a waste to replace a perfectly functioning pram. I wouldn't buy a new car seat either assuming it's been stored properly eg not dropped or had heavy things on top

PensionPuzzle · 30/03/2023 09:49

I'd take up MIL offer to contribute but divert it to the new car seat that you do need. Unless your existing pram hasn't stored well, or there was something about it that you didn't like that made it hard to use, in which case get the new one 🙂.

Elsamit · 30/03/2023 09:52

All these "save the planet" comments 🙄Get your pram! If your old one is recycled i.e. passing on to someone who could use it, then I fail to see how buying a new one is damaging the planet in any way at all. It has already been manufactured and whoever gets to use your's would have had to get a pram from elsewhere. Do what makes you happy OP. What does your husband think?

Goldbar · 30/03/2023 10:16

You need a pram which meets your needs and which you are comfortable using. It doesn't have to be new. If your old one no longer does this, YANBU to change, given it's an item you use everyday.

I wanted a different pram with DC2 as I found the uppababy vista I had with DC1 too bulky (we get public transport a lot during busy times) and not great off-road so changed to a Babyjogger city mini gt. I still find this quite big and difficult to manoeuvre, so will be changing to a smaller pushchair once DC2 is out of the bassinet.

nuttynet · 30/03/2023 10:18

Id stick with the old one. Give it a clean up

Then get a new stroller's when baby's about 6m and can sit up

TruffleShuffles · 30/03/2023 10:23

I wouldn’t get a new travel system, if you did want a new pram I would get something like the babyzen with the newborn pack so you have two different types of pram and the babyzen can be used until the child no longer needs a pram.

BaileysBreakfast · 30/03/2023 10:26

You don’t get much for yourself as a new mum. If the pram will make you happy then just make sure you sell the old one or gift it to a women’s refuge then nothing is wasted! I had a lot of prams/ buggies for my 2 but they all went to good homes afterwards.

KnittedCardi · 30/03/2023 11:13

I had something like a forth/fifth hand. Big old fashioned large four wheeled job. Bounced across our fields no probs. Slept in it, folded down and fitted in the boot of my Golf. Went straight into a cheap fold up job when older. Car seat also handed down within family. Most of their clothes too. Being the last two girls in a range of 15 cousins has its benefits!

These new systems are lovely, no doubt, but my goodness the price and the marketing are also off scale. Are they honestly, really, worth it?

fruitbrewhaha · 30/03/2023 11:36

I had no idea people did this, if the one you have is fine why buy another?

Do what you want, though. Or just buy your self something nice instead.

Potterurotter · 30/03/2023 11:37

I have the cybex travel system cost me over 1200 I’m pregnant again and want a bugaboo but know I would regret it so I will make do! As others are essentially paying / gifting I’d get what you want!

amylou8 · 30/03/2023 12:03

Buy the pram 😁

Mine are in their 20s now and I remember converting a Graco Travel system (yes I know it was the 90s!) I'd have have loved that pram but couldn't afford it, still pisses me off 25 years later 🤣

You get them little for such a short amount of time, if you have the means absolutely get the one you want.
