To buy a new pram?

We still have our Ocarro that we bought in 2017 for our first DD, we would just need to give it a good clean as hasn't been used since 2020 I would say and buy a new car seat. I'm assuming it's all still fine to use otherwise?

We are now expecting our 2nd, MIL kindly said if we were buying a new pram she would pay half and we have looked at getting a Flip XT3. I also have vouchers from work to put towards it I got, to cover the rest essentially.

AIBU to be buying a new pram at all?

With my insomnia currently it's playing on my mind alot.

Is there anything wrong with the old one, did it annoy you or not work well for your lifestyle?

If you want a new one then that’s fine too, just wondering if something is putting you off the old one. We spent a fortune on the pram for our DD which was probably a bit foolish but I use it frequently and it’s a lovely looking thing - I get lots of compliments on it.

Did you only have one pram last time? I haven’t heard of that flip one but it might be an idea to put the money towards a travel buggy or off-road/running buggy (even if you’re not into running - they’re life changing)!

I used the same pram with all four of mine. Had to buy a new chassis for it when third born was a baby as it snapped, but new one did fine and kept going with the youngest. I liked the pram a lot so got my money's worth out of it!

Do what you think is best OP. It's your choice.

So we don't have the car seat, it's the only thing that we didn't keep, so definitely need to get a new car seat/isofix base regardless.

I think it was just more to upgrade it a bit and go for the lighter version as the Ocarro was fairly heavy but actually we have a much bigger car now so space etc isn't an issue. The one I've seen is so lovely and a lovely colour etc but obviously this is just aesthetics and liking the thought of something new (materialistic, probably)

I have considered something like the Babyzen actually so that's a good point that if I am going to go new then to get something like that instead which I might prefer over time.

The Ocarro I loved but as it is quite bulky in general we went for a Joie stroller in the end if we were nipping out or on holiday.

Maybe it's just pregnancy brain making me not think straight 🙈

Honestly if you do want another pram then I would keep the occarro but then get a totally different pram like the babyzen to give you more options

we had an icandy for our DD1 and with DD2 who was Jist born we bought the babyzen. So we have the option for both depending on what we are doing and it works really well- and it works on planes

i don’t see the point of replacing one big pram with another especially given the carrycot phase doesn’t last very long at all and soon you will want a lighter pram anyway

Itsbytheby · 30/03/2023 13:08

Just googled the two you mention and they look exactly the same! So for that reason I wouldn't. I agree with others, get something different if you want something new. With DS he inherited DD's bugaboo (with new covers) and when he was six months we got a baby jogger city mini which we used SO much because it was so much lighter, easier to maneuver and to fold. We only really used the pram when we were walking far or he needed to sleep, everywhere else was the baby jogger. I could run with it too as we have good pavements.

So I think it's pointless to get the same thing in a new/ different version, but definitely jusifiable to get something new but different (yoyo, baby jogger etc).

I would keep the Occaro if it's still matches up to your lifestyle then buy a babyzen yo-yo or similar for travel and just " nipping out"
My friend used her babyzen yo-yo during a trip to Paris and said it was great

I’d get yours properly cleaned and use that. Spend the money on something more fun!

AIU · 30/03/2023 14:13

Get a new one, a pram is something you use daily and so worth the investment imo

shelbaba · 30/03/2023 14:14

Buy it and sell the other one.

I kept my travel system for the first year when I had my 2nd. Sold it once she was out the car seat at a year old. Got £200 for it and was able to buy a new buggy that I really liked and still use.

I can't believe people are so shortsighted as to think you don't do environmental damage by buying a new item if you pass the old one on because "it's already been manufactured". Buying new is what drives the manufacturers to make more and more items! Of course you don't need a new pram unless something is actively wrong or unsuitable about the first one.

I would say realistic rather than short sighted. I am not anti save the environment; far from it. I do what I can, wherever I can. However, whether we like it or not, we live in a society where people regularly update or replace things, often when the original still functions perfectly well e.g. cars, fitted kitchens, home decor etc. In an ideal, perfect world, we would all completely change how we operate but realistically, you will never stop people from buying what they want whether we think it is right or wrong. If the OP wants a new pram, then that is her prorogative. I also understand the supply and demand argument but also appreciate that this provides people with jobs and their livelihood. People will always need prams ergo they will always be manufactured. The occasional mum buying a second one is hardly a crime nor likely to make a massive impact in the overall scheme of things.
