How much would you spend to feed 1 adult per week now?

Just curious really, as I don't live in the UK anymore and keep reading how food costs are rising. When I left 5 years ago, I spent between 20 and 40 quid per week feeding myself, depending on how much meat I bought, what store cupboard items needed replacing, etc. I ate extremely well on that and while I did keep an eye on costs, I basically ate anything I fancied.

I did live near M&S where I got great yellow stickers hauls every now and again which kept my freezer full.

What sort of budget would you estimate you need now for a good, varied diet for one person?

£60 and that's me really trying to cut back!

Anonhopingforbaby · 29/03/2023 19:41

My sister is 23 and does it for £30 a week

BansheeofInisherin · 29/03/2023 19:42

I spend about £30 pp but we don't eat meat and everything cooked from scratch, mostly. Don't feel deprived though.

Greensleevevssnotnose · 29/03/2023 19:42

Depends on you store cupboards and freezer. Apart from milk and cigarettes I've not shopped in March for food.still Christmas leftovers and I had 40 kilo of chicken in December too.i will be interested to see.

Hotvimto3 · 29/03/2023 19:43

If it was just me I could easily feed myself on £20 - 30 a week

RaininSummer · 29/03/2023 19:43

About 40 for me alone I would think assuming I stay vegetarian and have my spices, oils etc in cupboard

Okunevo · 29/03/2023 19:43

£30 per adult/teen

Cakeykid · 29/03/2023 19:46

I spend around £90 twice a month for 2 adults, so that would be approx £22.50 per adult per week. All healthy home cooked meals, lots of veg, beans and lentils for bulkers, that doesn't include toiletries or anything else though.

I batch cook and neither DH or I have an issue with eating the same meal a few nights in row but I know this doesn't suit everyone at all!

TorchwoodWho · 29/03/2023 19:46

We're a family of 4 - 2 adults and 2 toddlers, and spend a little under £100 a week on shopping, so say £30 per adult as toddlers eat less.
That does include unnecessary items though (sweets, chocolate, branded items, alcohol, occasionally nappies...). It would be less if we cut back to the basics.

Wazzzzzuuuuuuup · 29/03/2023 19:46

I could do it for £40 I think. I am vegetarian, although my family eat meat so I buy meat/fish for them, and it's easily the most expensive part of my shop.

Some of my favourite meals are really dirt cheap, chilli, curry, spaghetti in tomato sauce with chick peas. If I lived on my own id make a big pan of chilli, eat it with rice one day, with pitta and cheese one day and topping a jacket the next. I could literally eat chilli in different combinations every day.

Mamamia7962 · 29/03/2023 19:48

I hardly eat meat and eat a lot of pulses which are cheap. I do like fish though which is expensive. I reckon I could feed myself for £20-£30 a week.

Ragwort · 29/03/2023 19:48

It's so hard to generalise ... one person's good, varied diet could include red meat, posh cheese, a couple of bottles of wine etc. (I spend at least £8 a week on my favourite ground coffee for example).

If I had to budget I could eat a good, nutritious diet for around £25 a week ... but I am very happy to spend more and enjoy decent coffee, red meat, wine etc. So I would guess around £60.

BansheeofInisherin · 29/03/2023 19:55

Yes, the definitition of a good varied diet is very individual. I also have a lot of spices and store cupboard essentials.

FrenchBoule · 29/03/2023 19:58

How long is a piece of string?

Depends on so many factors- appetite, activity, age, dietary requirements and earnings- what you can actually afford.

Teaandcaaaaake · 29/03/2023 19:59

Agree that everyone's definition of a varied nourishing diet is different, but the answers give an idea of what things are like now. Thank you for all the replies!

What I do miss are takeaways and eating out. Which I find very poor value for money these days.

strawberryjeans · 29/03/2023 20:05

Probably 50 ish

Againstmachine · 29/03/2023 20:06

20 to 25 quid and that includes having meat too.

Lovemusic33 · 29/03/2023 20:08

I spend £60 for 2 of us so would expect to spend £40 for one.

Mum2jenny · 29/03/2023 20:11

If my groceries bill is under £150 a week for 2 adults and 1 spoilt dog, I’m happy. But this includes all toiletries, cleaning products, loo roll, wine and other items ( birthday cards, garden items, plants)

BrioNotBiro · 29/03/2023 20:18

£50 a week (including other supermarket spends). Non-meat mostly Aldi/Lidl, ready meals when reduced from M&S for the freezer, and meat from the farm shop. I'm not much of a drinker which saves a bit luckily!

FernFairy · 29/03/2023 20:20

£60 ish for one person. Not including coffee beans, cat food, loo roll, cleaning products and toiletries or wine. Plenty of fish, decent quality food, meat, fruit and veg. That feeds me for at least a week often with leftovers frozen, breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Ace56 · 29/03/2023 20:48

I spend £30 on my weekly shop but then also eat out/get a takeaway at least once a week.

determinedtomakethiswork · 29/03/2023 20:51

I'm keeping quiet. Life on £20 per week for food sounds really miserable.

HuntingoftheSnark · 29/03/2023 20:53

I spend about £20 and think I eat really well! No meat or alcohol.
