How much would you spend to feed 1 adult per week now?

Just curious really, as I don't live in the UK anymore and keep reading how food costs are rising. When I left 5 years ago, I spent between 20 and 40 quid per week feeding myself, depending on how much meat I bought, what store cupboard items needed replacing, etc. I ate extremely well on that and while I did keep an eye on costs, I basically ate anything I fancied.

I did live near M&S where I got great yellow stickers hauls every now and again which kept my freezer full.

What sort of budget would you estimate you need now for a good, varied diet for one person?

I feed 3 adults on £25-30 a week. I buy in bulk and cook from scratch and use lots of ‘wonky’ vegetables.

Veg is very cheap anyway if you buy things like onions, carrots, sweet potato, butternut squash, cauliflower, cabbage and so on. What protein are you buying for £10 per person per week?

@Mum2jenny we're the same. 2 adults and a lovely dog who deserves all his treats for £150/ week. We must be shopping in the same place .

@Okunevo we eat a mainly veg diet so lots of lentils and stuff for protein, I do usually buy a whole chicken and butcher it and that stretches for a couple of meals. But mainly we eat veg and eggs.

Also, Lidl do a bumper pack of sausages which I buy sometimes and I turn them into sausage casserole :) very easy to make that stretch to more than one meal per person

I was at home last week on my own for 7 nights .Spent about £25 food ,ran dishwasher twice and one cycle for washing machine…saved a fortune!

Student DS (6'2" teen) is managing on £25/week. No booze or meals out, some junk food.

I buy the 10 for £4 pack of sausages which I make into 8 serves of sausage casserole with onions, butternut squash and a tin of beans. Eggs I buy the 15 pack for £2.50 (when they have them). It all seems to add up though and I couldn't feed myself and my teen for £20!

IVFfirsttimer91 · 31/03/2023 21:13

@Okunevo it does all add up but it’s definitely doable! Tinned tomatoes and tinned chickpeas are definitely a staple in this house. And we have a lot of soup 😂. All our money has been spent on IVF which it looks like we’re going to have to repeat, so we have a really tight budget for everything else at the moment. We definitely don’t eat glamorously, but we aren’t hungry either.

I have a student DS too he is only 5'8" no way could he feed himself or could I feed him for £25. We mostly shop at Morrisons.
