...coronation street party.

"Ooh, look - there's going to be a street party for the coronation! How lovely!"

"I think I shall give that a miss, thanks."

"Oh, why? Is this some kind of anti-monarchy stand?"

"I suppose I could say so, but nah, not really."

"You don't have to do anything. The residents committee are doing all the bunting and everything."

"Oh, God - bunting?"

"There'll be sandwiches and cake and probably samosas - you like samosas."

"Not enough to go to a street party."

"Oh, come on - it's a family occasion. The girls will love it!"

(Voices from living room) "No, we won't. We're not going!"

"Ohh. Well, will you go for me? With me?"

"No. We can go away for the weekend if you like. All four of us."

"I think you're being very unreasonable."

"Ah, well - there are people I can ask about that..."

Sorry meant to add - it sounds like someone else has done all the work and planning, you’d literally have to pick up a bottle of something you’d like to drink and turn up. There’s going to be “organised fun” up and down the country so might as well lean in

maybe claim suddenly blinding headache after an hour if it’s too much and retire to your bed.

ilovesooty · 29/03/2023 20:19

I like my neighbours. Still don't want to have anything to do with a street party or celebrating the coronation.

JingsMahBucket · 29/03/2023 20:31

Isseywith3witchycats · 29/03/2023 19:44

unintentional but we booked our holiday to start om May 6th so i will be able to avoid it altogether as i will be on a plane leaving the country

@Isseywith3witchycats same here. We’ll be in Germany that weekend because I’m attending a conference and the husband is tagging along. It wasn’t until later we realized we’ll be gone during the coronation. SWEET. That said, our (Scottish) town doesn’t really get all mucked up with that kind of stuff either.

User639762456 · 29/03/2023 20:45

I quite like our neighbours but I don't think I would want to socialise and make merry with them, it would be similar to a work do

Shoxfordian · 29/03/2023 20:59

Are you the one who wants to go? Yabu
or the one who doesn’t? Yanbu

SummaLuvin · 29/03/2023 18:58

genuinely thought this was going to be about a Coronation Street themed party, damn, what a shame...

So did I 😆

TennisWithDeborah · 29/03/2023 21:08

The person who wants to go, can go.

Not surprised about the kids’ reaction. Aren’t under 25s pro-republic on the whole these days?

Then, maybe it would be pleasant to spend a couple of hours drinking wine and eating cakes, chatting with them outside, having the road closed so little ones can play safely, and being outside no one has the pressure of having hosted?

I just can’t bring myself to arrange anything for Charles, but sometimes it’s nice to have an excuse to catch up with neighbours.

No thanks.

What for? The last time we spoke to any of them was the last street party, for - I’m not sure what - did some Royal get married about seven years ago?

I mean, they’re having a wheelbarrow race. This is the kind of people we’re talking about. They own wheelbarrows. And they’re going to decorate them.

I very sincerely have nothing against them and I just as honestly hope they have lovely time. But the prospect of being involved fills me with a dyspeptic dread, like the date for a minor operation or an imminent maths exam. Actually, either of those would be preferable as one would be, respectively, anaesthetised or left alone for three hours.

Another one here who thought it was for the TV show.

I live in a block of flats so I doubt any of them will be doing anything.

User639762456 · 29/03/2023 21:22

Things like this are not dissimilar to a work Christmas party, it's having to spend time being jolly with some people who you may be a bit friendly with and others that you dislike. So a bit of a trial really

cartagenagina · 29/03/2023 21:28

YANBU.

I am thinking of going abroad to avoid it all.

Floofydawg · 29/03/2023 21:29

@LimeCheesecake you lost me at 'little ones.' I don't have any of those, so I'd rather poke out both my eyes than spend my BH weekend with other people's.

bellac11 · 29/03/2023 21:30

We're away for the weekend, the place we're going better not have some street thing, its a village.... I should have thought this through

User639762456 · 29/03/2023 21:33

I don't think I would want to go away though as it's a bank holiday, we always try to avoid those as it's busy, nobody up our street will bother with parties so it will just be a normal day in the house I guess

Gladiaterf · 29/03/2023 21:36

YANBU. Fuck the royals.

whumpthereitis · 29/03/2023 21:37

Am fucking off to France that week.

Alexa, play La Marseillaise

Our street is having one, but it’s a bit like “any excuse for a party” in this street.

I can’t wait. One resident makes amazing burgers. Two of the ladies make cake to die for. DH and two of the Dads take charge of games for the kids on the grass.

I get to sit on my arse, drink wine, occasionally chat, eat food prepared by someone else all whilst other people entertain my kids. And our contribution for this this time round was less than £20.

I cannot wait.

likely won’t see a single bit of the actual coronation, but never mind.

5foot5 · 29/03/2023 21:47

That's genius. I own a wheelbarrow. Mind you it has a flat tyre and the last time I used it was to spread manure in the shrubbery. Still I can see the attraction.

I am old enough to remember the Silver Jubilee. Our village celebration included a decorated bicycle competition. I spent hours on my entry but it paid off I won first prize. Got a Jubilee mug I think.

User639762456 · 29/03/2023 21:49

We have a wheelbarrow too, it's not that unusual, how else do you get stuff from the front to the back of the house and down the garden

ilovesooty · 29/03/2023 21:58

I got my arse handed to me previously for objecting to road closures for street parties. Thankfully I doubt my street will be doing anything. If any of my clients are prepared to take appointments on the day of the coronation I'll be working.

mondaytosunday · 29/03/2023 22:03

I stand corrected. My 17 year old has decided 'we must go'!

Fairislefandango · 29/03/2023 22:14

Not a fan of the royal family (individually or as a concept). And although my neighbours are perfectly pleasant (almost exclusively elderly people, mostly with spaniels), I have no particular desire to socialise with them. Dh and ds are even more republican than I am, and dd would say it wasn't her vibe. None of us are 'miserable'. It's just not our idea of fun.

I have no idea. We have a little man who comes in from the village to do that sort of thing. I imagine he’s called Stan, though I’ve never asked.
