To speculate on the Typical Mumsnet poster ?

I've been thinking about the typical Mumsnet poster and I'm thinking it would typically be the mum in the 'Outnumbered' family -

Middle class

Living in London

Living in traditional house as opposed to on an estate

OP posts:

1/3

purplemunkey · 28/03/2023 18:50

mumsnet say they have 7million unique users a month - so I don’t think there is a ‘typical’ user TBH

FuckNuggets · 28/03/2023 19:06

Working class northerner, living on an estate.

HoneyPotBee · 28/03/2023 19:08

I think the average MN user isn’t a mum, spends a lot of time online, reads Harry Potter, watches This Morning, and gets hysterical over everything. She likes to claim she adheres all the MN tropes (chicken that lasts all week, no loo brush, husband earls £100k+, etc) but I suspect she shops in Asda (and calls it Asdas) eats junk food and lives in a rough estate.

Riapia · 28/03/2023 19:42

Someone with a vivid imagination.

sunshineandstrawberryjam · 28/03/2023 19:47

As far as I can tell, massive Harry Potter fans, probably know their Pottermore House, tend to live in houses, not flats, mostly work part time around the kids because their DH has a very important job and a busy hobby (cycling or golf), and are constantly on a diet to avoid ever being so much as a half stone overweight.

I sort of agree but think you’ve conflated 2-3 different Mumsnet “types” into one.

Yerroblemom1923 · 28/03/2023 20:11

I think she's more put together and less stressed than Clare from Outnumbered, similar build though - size 8/10. Works full time as does her dh. Both earn average £60,000 each. Goes to the gym. Has a labrador. Shops in Waitrose or Ocado delivery. Has a weekly cleaner. Double oven. 4 bedroom house. 2 bathrooms and downstairs loo. Garden.
They all eat together as a family most nights, except when children have sports clubs etc Has a daily takeaway coffee from Starbucks on her way to work.
Goes to the salon every couple of weeks for manicures etc.
Holidays in Greece and Portugal.

Zhougzhoug · 28/03/2023 20:27

I think a lot of people here are more "extremely online" than they let on, and odder than the MN stereotypes would suggest. The branding of the site lets advertisers imagine they're reaching a large clique of very normal Joules-clad breton top and puffa coat middle class 45 year olds, but I think the reality is closer to a raggle taggle band of total fucking fruit loops. Bet the demographic overlaps more with Reddit than you would expect but they don't get as many Ocado vouchers over there.

Chippy1234 · 28/03/2023 20:31

I think there are a lot of teachers on Mumsnet

allthebestmumsusethefword · 28/03/2023 20:31

grey hair, scruffy as arses, jeggings covered on dog hairs, t-shirt, doc martens, lots of thick cat eyeliner, council house waiting to downsize, tiny income, married to 2nd bf still, empty nest, no more fucks to give what wiv being perimenopausal and a late life diagnosed autistic and adhder (me).
(also doesn't care that i didn't answer the brief properly) 😜

PrettyMaybug · 28/03/2023 20:32

What is a 'traditional house?'

allthebestmumsusethefword · 28/03/2023 20:32

@Zhougzhoug '... raggle taggle band of total fucking fruit loops...' 🤣 exactly 😛

Ohyoudodoyou · 28/03/2023 20:33

My new plaything Bing AI generator thinks we look like this. One in white a bit like me after a few drinks like.

NGL, I would have a LOT more in common/a lot more to talk about with you, than the 'I earn £90K a year, but my DH is on way more, and has a long commute' feckers, who eat tofu and avacado on toast for brunch, salmon for breakfast, and whose children went to/go to private school, and who went to a posh uni themselves and have a masters. (That's if ANY of it is actually true!)

I agree. Teachers clearly have plenty of spare time to post here, seeing as they finish work at 3-30 and get 13 weeks off a year.

I tend to switch between three different characters in my head.

First one is a woman in her early 30s, stay at home mum to two young children. She has anxiety issues and ocd but is also very middle class and judgy. Depends on her husband too much but also let’s him get away with a lot of shit

Second one has a very impressive career. Earns lots of money. She’s just entered her 50s. Probably a boss at work and the boss at home. Her children are in their teens. She’s very sure of who she is and has some very strong views.

Third is an artsy type, lives in a cottage in a small village with a couple of primary aged children. An older mum who had them in her late thirties. She’s creative and smart but also has some strong political views which she is able to discuss without it turning into an argument. She bakes and crafts with the children. Has a lot of friends because she’s lovely. They have 3 Labradors which they walk in the woods nearby in all weather.

lol writing this down has made me want to have the third one as my mum!

freetheunicorn1 · 28/03/2023 20:53

I think the typical MNer is probably full of shit 😝

Abcdefgh1234 · 28/03/2023 20:58

Nope.

i’m not from england. I’m from south east asia.

i am high earner but i dont think i’m typical middle class UK because i’m no way near posh and elegant. Especially indont speak RP accent, i have my own accent.

live in east of england

i’m have a house though and not live in estate.

but still consider myself a working class, but a very educated working class.

Devoutspoken · 28/03/2023 21:06

Female?

Mark19735 · 28/03/2023 21:37

Claire Skinner - the mum in 'Outnumbered' - is fabulous and I look at that family's sitcom life as totally aspirational, but way beyond the wildest dreams of most real people. See also Anna Maxwell Martin in 'Motherland'.

L1ttledrummergirl · 28/03/2023 21:43

I live in house Confused

Zhougzhoug · 28/03/2023 21:47

I hope some advertisers are reading this with their head in their hands. Cat Bin Lady, now she had a mumsnet energy.

WandaWonder · 28/03/2023 21:48

Something like hyacinth bucket, shameless and outnumbered/motherland

Littleloveydovey · 28/03/2023 21:49

Op there is about 12 million folks on here. I think you’ve maybe got confused, it’s not some small members club. It’s a mammoth forum and covers more than London. Or even the uk for that matter.
