DH thinks rice crispies are a suitable breakfast

That's it really, DH would happily send children (3&6) off to school/childminder on one bowl of rice crispies and a bit of fruit in the morning. I feel very strongly about filling kids tummies properly before school, and while i have no problem with a bowl of rice crispies now and then, that they are ultimately just puffs of air, and the children need something more nutritionally dense.

We argued about it properly this morning, and now he's in a huff about me undermining him. I just want to guage what others think - is a bowl of rice crispies and a bit of fruit enough to keep a child's energy levels up all morning?

I get it OP, and I'll be unreasonable with you.
My children tend to have porridge or weetabix, it will be loaded with all of or a combination of banana/grated apple or pear, raisins, sunflower seeds. Usually honey or something too. THEY STILL WANT A PIECE OF FRUIT AFTER AND ABOUT AN HOUR LATER COMPLAIN THEY ARE HUNGRY?! Think I'm going to start giving them a piece of toast with it. I don't know where they put it!

We do absolutely buy cereal and they love it, but I wouldn't give it to them on a busy day where they're out all day as it wouldn't be enough fuel for them. We do other things sometimes too, toast, crossiants, crumpets, pancakes etc... but rarely. Some children are okay on a bowl of coco pops and that's it. Which totally blows my mind. A bowl of cereal and a piece of fruit wouldn't be a substantial enough breakfast for being out all day here.

They offer it on hospitals to adults :)

Hospital food really is NOT the epitome of a healthy diet though!

ArcticSkewer · 28/03/2023 08:53

well they aren't good for gut health if they are topped up with sucralose and acesulfamate k (and are not allowed in food for young children either)

Ive been told countless times by GPs and hospitals to make sure I eat them when taking antibiotics

Personally I dont use the low sugar ones, my OH does because thats what his diabetic nurse advises.

Phonemonkey2023 · 28/03/2023 08:57

pretty much what I had everyday before school when I was a kid, my DS had them for supper last night 😂

Thanks all, interesting reading for sure.

To clear a couple things up - not that Im sure most of you read the updates- it's in the pantry because DH does the shopping sometimes? It doesnt bother me whatsoever and he's a brilliant husband and father!

The argument was actually started by him, when I mentioned that I usually fed them more, I wasnt picking a fight about cereal!

And lastly although I have no problem with cereal generally, as part of a balanced diet, Im really surprised so many people have said it's fine, simply because it's marketed as healthy breakfast and has found it's way to the cereal aisle.

You started the argument by telling him what you usually gave them for breakfast.

What was the purpose in pointing that out?

SVRT19674 · 28/03/2023 08:58

Absolutely fine. Mi daughter had rice crispies this morning, a mix of of white ones and chocolate ones. I had crispies or corn flakes for breakfast during my childhood and here I am, a strapping 5 foot 10 woman. Calling something like that starvation is laughable.

Smilethoughyourheartisaching · 28/03/2023 08:59

This is the nutritional value of those Rice Krispies. I wouldn’t say it was terrible. Plus they’re getting vitamin a and c, iron and potassium

there are much worse things they can be given.

Rice Krispies and fruit will provide a quick burst of energy, being essentially sugar.

If they're having skimmed or semi-skimmed milk with their Rice Krispies and are only eating a little bit of fruit (ie not a whole apple or whole banana) then I think they would benefit from a little more fat in the meal, to provide some more long-lasting sustenance.

I would suggest giving them full-cream milk or perhaps adding some cream to the milk. Instead of Rice Krispies, try bite-size Shredded Wheat or Weetabix.

A more filling breakfast would be scrambled eggs or beans on toast or fish fingers etc - but many people can't stomach a cooked meal in the morning (myself included!).

picklemewalnuts · 28/03/2023 08:56

Cereal fans, have you ever weighed a serving? Most people have a double serving by instinct, I think. So the salt/sugar content is likely to be twice what you think you're having.

I was so surprised when I leaned what a serving should be. It’s so small lol.
I dont eat cereal often because when I do I probably eat 4 times what I should lol but then I do feel ridiculously full after 😂

SunshineAndFizz · 28/03/2023 09:00

YABU they're fine.

Are there better things? Yes. It's it worth a huge argument? Definitely not.

Lancasterel · 28/03/2023 09:00

When my daughter was a bit younger, 4/5, she often didn’t want much for breakfast and if she ate a (small) bowl of rice crispies I took it as a win!

Now she is getting on for 7 and suddenly wants to eat everything in the world for breakfast 😂

Nap1983 · 28/03/2023 09:01

I think you should report your DH to SS for neglect, Imagine your poor kids felt a bit hungry after a Perfectly normal breakfast!!! In all seriousness, no wonder there are so many overweight kids with the amount some folk are feeding them in the morning (and other times) honestly your kid is not going to suffer from being slightly hungry for 2hrs before snack time

hyacinthbluebell · 28/03/2023 09:01

Rice crispies wouldn’t be my first choice but some kids won’t eat much . At that age my two were still having porridge and banana as they got older it became harder to persuade them and they moved onto cheerio’s .. then weetabix .. now as teens finally back to porridge . I would not expect any breakfast to keep a child going all morning though and I’d expect them to want a snack by about 10.30/11 .. most kids have something at first break at school .

I think you are wrong to not factor in something later in the morning . Your husband is wrong to not give a child more food when they say they are hungry .

I keep the worst sugary horrible breakfasts as school holiday treats

I’m a nutritionist and the answer is no, it’s not adequate. Your children need protein and fat to keep them fuelled for play and learning. Cereal comes under the umbrella of ultra-processed foods, which are bad for every aspect of health and linked with long-term health issues like obesity, T1 diabetes and heart disease later in life. They’ve clearly managed to do some very clever marketing since so many parents seem to believe they are a healthy option.

Obviously it’s fine to have a bowl of sugary cereal from time to time but it isn’t an adequate every day breakfast. Anything with a sugar content over 10% is considered ‘high’. Sugar puffs contain 22% sugar. A 100g portion of sugar puffs would exceed the NHS recommended daily limit for sugar intake in a child under 10.

So what is the perfect breakfast?

Mumof3confused · 28/03/2023 09:03

I‘m sorry I just re-read the post and realised it’s rice crispiest so about 1/2 the sugar of sugar puffs. However, it’s still an ultra-processed food and it’s best to avoid giving children too many rice-based products.

Rice based cereal and snacks may be harmful in excess

Out of interest, what would you give for breakfast instead of cereal?

What grown adult would eat Rice Crispies for breakfast?? I try not to give my kids crappy foods that I wouldn't eat myself.

I'm a grown adult and I had a bowl of chocolate kraves for breakfast, so did my kids it was lovely and chocolatey, great way to start a day

Surely it's only sugery if you actually add sugar? I don't add the suger my kids enjoy it actually took dd till high school breakfast club to notice some people suger their cereal

No, it's already full of sugar - that's why it tastes so sweet!

WimbourneWasps · 28/03/2023 09:06

It's rice crispies not heroin

This is overfeeding. Massively.

😂

Spidey66 · 28/03/2023 09:08

It’s maybe not as healthy as porridge or a whole grain cereal like weetabix or shreddies but it’s fortified with vitamins, low in fat and sugar, they’re getting protein calcium and vit D from the milk and potassium etc from the bananas. It’s fine.

Probably one of the many that would eat them themselves? You can't seriously be unaware that not all grown adults are ultra healthy and would be bothered by Rice Crispies?

Well fair point. I do remember being served bouncy potato’s lol.

ScottishLavender · 28/03/2023 09:09

thisismyheart · 28/03/2023 08:00

Interesting!

Thanks all, my argument is not against cereal generally - just opting for something more substantial. I'd come down later in the morning, and the children were asking for more breakfast and he was insisting they were fine. I usually feed them as much as they ask for - toast, weetabix, granola, porridge, fruits, etc...totally appreciate that some children eat less sometimes tho- not the case for mine. Unless DH is getting them ready apparently ha!

So as you've said you come down later, leaving your DH to do the breakfasts, I'd say it's his decision. You don't like his choice?

Get up and do it yourself. 🙄
