DH thinks rice crispies are a suitable breakfast

That's it really, DH would happily send children (3&6) off to school/childminder on one bowl of rice crispies and a bit of fruit in the morning. I feel very strongly about filling kids tummies properly before school, and while i have no problem with a bowl of rice crispies now and then, that they are ultimately just puffs of air, and the children need something more nutritionally dense.

We argued about it properly this morning, and now he's in a huff about me undermining him. I just want to guage what others think - is a bowl of rice crispies and a bit of fruit enough to keep a child's energy levels up all morning?

If my dc had a bowl or rice crispies and fruit each day I’d be very happy! It’s not a bad breakfast at all !
one of mine has ASD and arfid and nibbles at a choc chip cookie each morning 😭

WildAloofRebel · 28/03/2023 07:50

It’s fine.

In our house it’s weetabix+bran flakes, and an actimel. No hope of protein in the am. I’d rather they fill their tummies with carbs rather than reject and argue about other foods!

well, I would leave out the actimel, that is just a high sugar con

Zola1 · 28/03/2023 08:36

Literally will accept whatever I can get into the kids before school. Rice crispies are popular with 8 year old, he'd moan if he was hungry for sure as he doesn't hold back in ordering more food.
12 has Greek yoghurt with blueberries and honey because she is super extra, little 4 and 2 have toast and sometimes banana and/or yoghurt. They all take banana, grapes or cereal bar for first break (except 2, shes a food hoover and eats whatever nursery put in her path).
Rice crispies definitely won't do them harm and surely if they were hungry at school they'd tell you

YRGAM · 28/03/2023 08:37

So your husband gets up with the children and sorts their breakfast out (the kind of breakfast which is fine for many grown adults), then you eventually "come down" and have a go at him about it in front of the children? Lucky man

Goodadvice1980 · 28/03/2023 08:37

YABU OP. You undermined your own dh with the children.

He gave them breakfast cereal not crystal meth.

Have a 🥓 sarnie and a ☕️.

I assumed @CockPits was being sarcastic.

You never know with some of the odd balls on here

MommasTired · 28/03/2023 08:38

Yeah I think it’s alright with some fruit too as you said.

do you have any reason to be concerned they're nutritionally deficient? I see you said they’re asking for more food, maybe give whole milk with the cereal and a more filling fruit banana or something, but it’s a fine breakfast

What grown adult would eat Rice Crispies for breakfast?? I try not to give my kids crappy foods that I wouldn't eat myself.

Thanks all, interesting reading for sure.

To clear a couple things up - not that Im sure most of you read the updates- it's in the pantry because DH does the shopping sometimes? It doesnt bother me whatsoever and he's a brilliant husband and father!

The argument was actually started by him, when I mentioned that I usually fed them more, I wasnt picking a fight about cereal!

And lastly although I have no problem with cereal generally, as part of a balanced diet, Im really surprised so many people have said it's fine, simply because it's marketed as healthy breakfast and has found it's way to the cereal aisle.

No you started the argument by criticising his parenting presumably in front of the children!

Exactly what my own DC has Rice Krispies and an apple or banana.

Breakfast club offer toast, cornflakes, rice krispies or shreddies with fruit.

Oh this has just reminded me being hopsital… they always offer cereal or toast with fruit.
some hospital stays there wasn’t choice of toast , it was rice kirsipes or cornflakes with fruit.

aSofaNearYou · 28/03/2023 08:40

Of course it's fine. If they're still hungry, just give them more or something else, but it's a totally normal cereal.

PurplePineapple1 · 28/03/2023 08:41

"Processed" is the new carbs on here isn't it.

Sillysheep · 28/03/2023 08:41

The extrusion and overheating of cereals makes them pretty unhealthy.

oh the carbs hate, what a blast from the past. Atkins got me good 😂

Hoolihan · 28/03/2023 08:42

Tbh the obesity rate in this country is soaring precisely because of empty rubbish like breakfast cereal and all the other ultra processed foods that the multinationals have invented to make money out of us!

Plenty of adults eat cereals like rice crispies for breakfast. It's a cheap as easy option. I can't imagine caring enough to comment on what other adults eat, let alone sneering about how it's a crappy food you wouldn't ever think about eating. Hmm

They're not even cheap?!

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 28/03/2023 08:44

Bowl of cereal with milk plus piece of fruit = breakfast. I like a toastie as well but whatever.

There are some kids who eat a ton of breakfast as their main meal and very little the rest of the day, but if your kids were like that your DH would know about it.

Enko · 28/03/2023 08:45

If they are asking for more they should be allowed more imo. However rice krispies and fruit is fine for breakfast imo.

Some like a lot of breakfast others less so. Its about listening to your body.

TrainersAltonTowersWontKill · 28/03/2023 08:45

Oh god, my friend is like this, paranoid the kids will starve to death because they've had a perfectly normal breakfast of cereal and fruit.

She's spent so long shovelling snacks into them that they feel the need to constantly eat now, years down the line. They have some serious problems controlling it.

CattySam · 28/03/2023 08:45

I spent the first 6 years of my eldest DCs life encouraging/battling them to eat porridge/yoghurt&nuts/eggs for breakfast every morning because I thought cereal was the food of the devil. They wanted cereal because that’s what their friends have.

When DC2 came along I relaxed a little and my life is so much easier. Kids eat & it only takes a fraction of the time to prepare. Win win. As long as the rest of their diet is nutritionally balanced then it’s fine!!

How do you know the poster doesnt use the sugar free ones

They're pro biotics and good for gut health

How?? Rice Krispies are extruded. And I’m telling you when I make fried rice the rices gets dang hot! Does that make it instantly bad for me. Confused

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 28/03/2023 08:47

I prefer meusli but Rice Krisipies (and the cheap own brand variants) are one of the lowest salt and sugar cereals.
