DH thinks rice crispies are a suitable breakfast

thisismyheart · 28/03/2023 07:46

That's it really, DH would happily send children (3&6) off to school/childminder on one bowl of rice crispies and a bit of fruit in the morning. I feel very strongly about filling kids tummies properly before school, and while i have no problem with a bowl of rice crispies now and then, that they are ultimately just puffs of air, and the children need something more nutritionally dense.

We argued about it properly this morning, and now he's in a huff about me undermining him. I just want to guage what others think - is a bowl of rice crispies and a bit of fruit enough to keep a child's energy levels up all morning?

Aren’t Rice Krispies just grains of rice puffed up? So it’s like eating a bowl of rice? Which is not unsubstantial.

Happy to be corrected on that!

mrsfennel · 28/03/2023 08:18

As long as its with milk and piece of fruit I think its fine. The only 'mainstream' cereal I buy ( for myself, I dont have kids) is shredded wheat as its the only one that has no added sugar.

But would they eat that? I like it with a banana chopped in or blueberries, but if im honest my perfect breakfast would be half a box of coco pops with cream.

Dismissing it as dreadful based on just assuming that it must be because it’s cereal is really silly.

Where did I dismiss it as dreadful? I actually said it was a normal, reasonable breakfast and that the OP was unreasonable to object.

Having just googled, it does have more sugar content than some other cereal options, so my initial point stands that I can understand why the OP might prefer a less sugary option.

ChocSaltyBalls · 28/03/2023 08:19

You sound controlling and that you over feed them. In any event this is an overreaction. He’s not sending them to school starving. Give them a snack for break if you’re that concerned. Not worth arguing about.

Newnamenewname109870 · 28/03/2023 08:19

It’s not the best cereal but it’s not the worst. A bowl of that with some fruit is plenty. You don’t exactly want them overeating! Don’t have them in the hosue if you don’t like them as cereal?

DataColour · 28/03/2023 08:20

I kind of agree with you. My kids would be hungry by mid morning if they had that for breakfast. But they are young teens. Might be enough for a 3 and 6 yr old.
I never had cereal growing up so no experience of it but DH says he was very hungry in an hour or so after a breakfast of cereal which was his only option in the morning growing up.

Aw I was going to say I think it’s fine but if they are still hungry then they need bigger portions or add in some toast or something. It’s not ok that they are still hungry.

She didn’t say they were still hungry. She said they were asking for something else. That’s two different things.

LookItsMeAgain · 28/03/2023 08:20

I grew up only having a bowl of rice krispies and milk and sometimes I chopped a banana over the krispies as well. That was the entirety of my breakfast before going to school.
My parents (usually my mum) would make me a packed lunch and I'd have to wait until "little break" which would be around 10:30 or so before I could have anything else to eat. Then it was wait until lunch time for my sandwiches.

It's perfectly fine as a breakfast.

Have you ever thought that your kids don't want your stodgy breakfasts and would prefer a lighter breakfast? Have you actually asked them what they want for breakfast?

Also, give your DH a break. What he served his kids is literally and actually sold in the breakfast cereal aisle in supermarkets. It's sold as a standalone breakfast.

WonderingWanda · 28/03/2023 08:21

Could add a bit of protien with a dollop of yogurt.

My kids can make these breakfasts themselves on weekdays.
Yogurt, cereal, fruit.
Bagel, cream cheese, fruit.

Toast, marmite, baby bel and fruit.
Bagel, peanut butter and banana

suzyscat · 28/03/2023 08:21

I don't like cereal for breakfast personally and it used to be a hill I'd die on but I'm over it now tbh.

I hate this idea that kids must be stuffed to the gunnels at all times and fed a snack before they can feel even slightly peckish.

Its ok ti feel peckish. It’s ok to feel hungry and ready for lunch.

I’d go so far as it’s very important to feel hungry. Feeling hungry is normal. Grazing and snacking all day when there is no sense of hunger is not healthy.

Parents seem to travel with bags of snacks these days, stuffing the kids every two hours, like they’re newborn lambs.

No child should eat a minimum of:

Cereal + toast + yogurt + fruit + eggs

Anything less than this is practically starvation

What do you serve them for lunch or dinner if that's what they get for breakfast?

DustyLee123 · 28/03/2023 08:22

Me and mine eat cereal only for breakfast, no fruit. So YABU.

Oysterbabe · 28/03/2023 08:22

I can't believe you had an actual argument about this. They are perfectly fine as a breakfast and you should apologise to him.

My children have Lidl's knock off Rice Krispies for breakfast often.

Setting them up for obesity there! 👍🏼

ComeTheFuckOnBridgett · 28/03/2023 08:22

Fucking hell there's nothing wrong with cereal and fruit for breakfast!

Whinge · 28/03/2023 08:23

It could simply be that these kids are used to their mum making them food constantly in the morning so they’ve got used to eating till they’re stuffed rather than till they’re satisfied.

I agree. OP admits to feeding them as much as they want in the morning, so potentially 2 or 3 different thing every morning. Then I can easily see children grumbling that they're still hungry, even if they're not. Simply because they've only eaten cereal and fruit and they expect another 2 or 3 different things before leaving the house.

Tirrrrred · 28/03/2023 08:23

Mine eat 4/5 cookies every morning. I wish they would eat rice crispies.

That's exactly what it is. It is rice. Puffed up.

I alternated my breakfast of Krispies with Corn Flakes or Sugar Puffs (as a treat). Again, all were perfectly substantial.

JessicaBrassica · 28/03/2023 08:24

If there's no role for rice krispies in breakfast, why are they in the pantry?

MajorCarolDanvers · 28/03/2023 08:24

Perfectly good breakfast

DataColour · 28/03/2023 08:24

If they were "unpuffed* won't they be just a tablespoon or 2 of rice, which isn't substantial even with milk?

LookItsMeAgain · 28/03/2023 08:25

To make krispy buns for cake sales???

Mouk · 28/03/2023 08:25

A bowl of cereal and a piece of fruit is more than enough for them.

My youngest eats like a bird, I wish he'd eat a breakfast like that.

Sirzy · 28/03/2023 08:26

thisismyheart · 28/03/2023 08:00

Interesting!

Thanks all, my argument is not against cereal generally - just opting for something more substantial. I'd come down later in the morning, and the children were asking for more breakfast and he was insisting they were fine. I usually feed them as much as they ask for - toast, weetabix, granola, porridge, fruits, etc...totally appreciate that some children eat less sometimes tho- not the case for mine. Unless DH is getting them ready apparently ha!

It sounds more like you are over feeding rather than him under feeding.

one bowl of cereal and some fruit is plenty!
