DH thinks rice crispies are a suitable breakfast

That's it really, DH would happily send children (3&6) off to school/childminder on one bowl of rice crispies and a bit of fruit in the morning. I feel very strongly about filling kids tummies properly before school, and while i have no problem with a bowl of rice crispies now and then, that they are ultimately just puffs of air, and the children need something more nutritionally dense.

We argued about it properly this morning, and now he's in a huff about me undermining him. I just want to guage what others think - is a bowl of rice crispies and a bit of fruit enough to keep a child's energy levels up all morning?

I wouldn’t have been happy with a bowl of Rice Krispies when I was a child. It was Coco Pops or Frosties only for me.

The best treat was that cookie crispy cereal. I can still taste the leftover milk… chunky with bits of cookie in it. So delicious.

I don't think I had realised how many people are very very uptight about breakfast, and in particular the evils of cereal.

Yeah if it was served for every meal, or with spoonfuls of sugar on top, fair enough. It's one breakfast, one day. Amongst dozens of other meals and snacks.

As for referring to Rice Krispies as dessert... 😱 That's one of the worst things I've read on MN in over a decade.

Although yes, Frosties was a classic everyday. I always had mine with a banana chopped through it and ate it right away, I need them crunchy. DH waits for his to turn to mush.

I'm with you.

My dc do eat cereal but I try and buy porridge, weetabix, iron rich hoop things, cheerios wheat etc.
I do try and break it up with Greek yoghurt and honey and fruit.
And on the weekend dippy eggs or scrambled eggs.
However really they are not good at all.

I also get the point from posters saying she's undermining him.
I think I am massively guilty or this.

What I think though is that dh lends towards the lazier side of things and I dint think he's ever thought of them eating a balanced diet. He wouldn't think... X had this last night and the night before.. Let's give some variety. That's why I get frustrated.

If we ever had shared parenting I don't think he would feed them a thoughtful nutrition balanced diet.
I do try and it's hard enough as it is.

The answers on here are wild. Of course rice crispies are not a nutritious, balance meal. No wonder half the nation are unhealthy and overweight. Try a bit harder people. It’s not hard or time consuming to toast some bread and scramble an egg. Oats in the microwave with some fruit and yogurt, takes 2 minutes to prepare. Cereal is one of the most processed food available on the planet. And honestly, just cause you had it as a kid and turned out fine… doesn't mean you should not evolve and try to do better for your kids.

Cereal in the morning is our culture. I'm not going to fuck around with an egg in the morning unless it's the weekend.

They’re absolutely fine and v normal, but like you I’d prefer porridge or something more filling. Maybe offer toast as well after cereal or a banana.

Breakfast is hugely important and infact I'm much healthier not having it.
The point is eating stuff like that this doesnt "sustain" them at all. It does raise sugar, doesn't fill them up and doesn't give any nutrients so yes.. As the odd go too fine but generally it's rubbish.

I’ve never had those ones. I loved having loads of milk on my Coco Pops so I could drink all of the chocolatey milk afterwards. It was my favourite breakfast growing up.

Oh yes, the chocolatey milk. I used to have a plastic coco pops bowl with a built in straw so I could drink the coco pops milk in a civilised manner.

Not you in particular, just the sheer number of posts saying that eggs and avocado are much healthier. There have been a lot of those types of posts on this thread. Most seem to be about the importance of protein at breakfast so I doubt oats would be seen as good enough either. I eat porridge for breakfast quite often on the days I don’t skip breakfast but I wouldn’t have eaten it as a child.

But my children do eat steel cut oats/porridge at least three times per week. That is what they have been exposed to and they wouldn't think to ask for cereal vs. oats as we have never had cereal in the house.

You don’t need to sell me on oats, I already eat them Wink I had major issues with textures when I was younger though and couldn’t stand porridge back then. I think a lot of children struggle with certain textures and flavours that they grow out of as they get older and you have to pick your battles if you have one of those children.

Read the side of the box and remember it does not give you the nutritional value or calories of the milk you pour on it.

Each parent knows the needs of their child and can make choices based of those needs. I am sure you can tell that I feel passionate about nutrition but my children don't have texture issues and that makes things easier.

I guess they are more filling - only helpful if someone is actually hungry which many aren't very early in the morning. I'd prefer Rice Krispies for that reason

Thank you for asking and not being sarcastic. I know food can be a touchy subject on here. I have spent the past 10 years or so really diving deep into learning about nutrition because I believe that food + sleep are the basis overall good health. As a general rule we don't keep packaged food, processed foods in our house. Our toddler doesn't really ask for these things but we tread carefully because I don't want them to have an unhealthy relationship with food. I don't limit/make a big deal about food when are are out or traveling and they can generally have what they want when we are eating out or traveling (like juice, ice cream, cakes, etc).

A typical day (and our toddler + baby eat the same way we do but baby will have theirs pureed/no salt).

Breakfast: scrambled egg with a green vegetable, mushrooms, avocado; or steal cut oats with a nut butter and fruit; or homemade bread with avocado.

Lunch: I have a big salad and try to eat as many vegetables as possible in this meal, probably around 12-15 + protein (chickpeas; salmon; chicken; etc). Children will have a variation of this but I tend to add some carbs like a grain or homemade bread. We also make soup once/twice per week and so we will have that with salad too.

Snacks: homemade hummus; cut up vegetables (our kids love peppers, lightly steamed asparagus); snap peas. We make a healthier version of muffins once per week that uses oats as the base (kids love them; I find them to be okay). Lots of fruit and kale smoothies. A plus to not having rubbish in the house is that I never have to say no to what our children ask for, they can eat when they are hungry and they make good choices (and I think that has to do with the fact that the other options just aren't in the house).

Dinner: protein + carb + vegetables. Last night was white fish with faro and homemade pesto and sautéed dandelion greens; the day before was roast chicken with roasted cauliflower, carrots; broccoli (with a generous amount of garlic and olive oil) and quinoa.

Dessert: a couple times per month we have ice cream in the house but its going to be one with very limited ingredients (cream, sugar, things we know and recognize).

We would never eat seed oils, fake sugar, anything that we don't recognize the name of on an ingredients list.

I think when people think of healthy foods they think of what I listed for dinner (protein + vegetables) and that sounds so boring and it can be if it isn't cooked well. We love cooking but we also have very young children and demanding lives and so we work to find meals that are healthy, easy to make and really good. I can share some recipes + other resources if you'd like?

Ice cream is my vice. I keep it in the house all the time but maybe limiting it to buying only a half gallon twice a month would work, ice cream is my hardest thing to limit. You’re right, it’s important to not have a lot of these foods in the house.

I tried steel cut oats last week and couldn’t get over the texture. I did research the kinds and in the end decided to go back to old fashioned oats which take 5 minutes to cook which is at least better than the instant oats and though it’s obviously still more processed than steel cut, it is fairly close in nutrition to it and just a few notches more on the glycemic index.

Love avocado toast, right now I use the Ezekiel sesame bread but I wish it didn’t have soybean in it, I wonder if that interferes with hormones. Omelets with cheese are a regular breakfast and in the summer spinach and pineapple/mango smoothies. I could start adding vegetables to the eggs. Thank you for the suggestions.

Try to do an apple and a baby bel cheese for snack.

Love salads but should put more and varied vegetables in. I had to look up what farro is 😆and dandelion greens I’ve never tried. My family loves broccoli and and are generally pretty good with I’d say 3/4 of vegetable options. I would like a good healthy bread recipe that tastes good. I have a bread machine but usually only make rosemary bread with bread flour. I have some white whole wheat on hand but like I said, haven’t found a good recipe. Would love recipes and resources! Thanks! 😀

I have to make my guys in the house meat most nights. I could easily be vegetarian. If I make them beef tacos, I will have a bean dish instead. Last night I had one steak (too expensive to buy more) and cut it into strips and cooked with peppers, onions, broccoli for my husband and son. And that was their dinner. My son has type 1, so he eats fairly healthy anyway, I limit carbs for his meals, not keto though I feel that is too extreme. obviously his diet is not perfect though. But he never had a sweet tooth ever. His vice is chips or crackers. I’m ok with a grilled cheese and a salad for dinner. Tonight is chicken thighs and sautéed spinach. I need more ideas.

Oh, I make pancakes with maple syrup and bacon on the weekend! Which is very carby and fast spiking I know. It’s usually once a week at most or a couple times a month. Sorry for all the posts. I’m trying to make better meals that still taste good.
