DH thinks rice crispies are a suitable breakfast

thisismyheart · 28/03/2023 07:46

That's it really, DH would happily send children (3&6) off to school/childminder on one bowl of rice crispies and a bit of fruit in the morning. I feel very strongly about filling kids tummies properly before school, and while i have no problem with a bowl of rice crispies now and then, that they are ultimately just puffs of air, and the children need something more nutritionally dense.

We argued about it properly this morning, and now he's in a huff about me undermining him. I just want to guage what others think - is a bowl of rice crispies and a bit of fruit enough to keep a child's energy levels up all morning?

Do you want to die on this hill? Pick your battles would be my suggestion - you're making this more than it is.

Pretty sure the OP has many, many hills like this. Her poor husband.

Curiosity101 · 28/03/2023 13:05

@Hardbackwriter and @Antiquiteas 🤣. I relent that they're not as nice as done in a pan. But the nutrition is the same and the trick is to 'undercook' them and use the little bit of uncooked egg that's left to cool down the hot cooked egg to stop it from overcooking.

If you overcook it (very easy to do) then it's a grey squeaky mess 🤢. Done properly in a microwave they're only a little bit different to pan. But yeah, pan is definitely better 😃, just takes way longer.

'It's actually shocking that so many parents don't understand that childhood diets shape what's to come, and healthy eating starts young.'

Eating disorders do start young. Watching your parents arguing about Rice Krispies is probably a good place to go about starting to get one.

Robinni · 28/03/2023 13:08

She has a pantry. This explains things.

OP if you want to be snobby, or overly concerned about the sugar content then change to weetabix, granola, or porridge as you’ve already said. Get them to bed earlier and up earlier if you want to insist on the 5 courses but as I said before; little and often is better to sustain them, than sending them off so full they fall asleep in class.

To placate husband, perhaps suggest Rice Krispies for the weekend only, healthier alternatives for the weekdays.

The Continent, darling. You know… where the children are so polite and never whine or cry, and everyone is beautiful but natural of course, never too much makeup or fake nails, just naturally elegant, and of course they don’t wear those tacky British clothes, they wear natural fabrics in gorgeous cuts tailored to fit them. They’re all so naturally elegant that you can spot the fat slobby ugly tacky Rice Krispie gobbling Brits a mile away at every airport. The Continent.

PS don’t forget hot chocolate for dipping your bread in. Classic on The Continent.

Oh, so sorry, of course - THE continent. I went there on holiday. I was there for three days and in that time could see that every aspect was superior, of course. How could I forget about the continent?! Probably impaired mental function due to being fed cereal as a child, alas.

but what hill could be more important than filling right up children’s tummies in the morning??

I don't know exactly where 'on the continent' is - Finland? Portgual? Somewhere in between?

I do know that in both France and Italy nutella on white bread is a totally normal breakfast for children, in case we're getting into the 'oh everyone else does it so much better' game, which I always find so tedious (and weirdly full of British exceptionalism)

Standard breakfasts in France are Nutella on French bread, pain au chocolate or other pastry, chocolat chaud or froid. Hot or cold. They serve honey, jam and butter with the pastries/bread.

Cereal is or was a newer trend and more for children.

ShepherdMoons · 28/03/2023 13:12

I'm amazed at the niff naff people are worried about. Of course a bowl of cereal and some fruit is fine, your husband must think you've lost the plot.

Codlingmoths · 28/03/2023 13:13

I don’t allow it and fortunately Dh goes along with this, left to himself it wouldn’t have crossed his mind that cocopops aren’t a great start to the day. But since he lives wiht me he agrees that cornflakes are a Sunday breakfast (and we buy the own brand ones as they have less sugar). It’s weetbix and muesli on school mornings for my children.

Being a bit silly about this @thisismyheart

It’s a cereal - puffs of rice, not air!!

Totally fine with milk and fruit for a 3 & 6 year old. You could add in toast or a small yoghurt or something but anyone and you’ll stuff them!

They should have a snack about 10.30 and then lunch, followed by further snack about 3.30/4, then dinner, then bedtime snack… am I making sense here, they need frequent food not stuffed in one sitting.

This snack business is ott as well. Sorry to be an old fart, but kids these days are seemingly continuously with something stuffed in their mouths. And don't get me started in the constant need for water.

But as I said, I am old, and therefore quite adequately fed and watered on a regular three times a day basis.

TeaAndTwoSugars · 28/03/2023 12:29

I think something like porridge, shreddies, cheerios or even toast is a bit healthier and more substantial.
Rice crispies you'd have to have a lot lol and theres not much nutrition wise.

I'd say Cheerio to the Cheerios !!

Ya, The Continent. Maybe if you had mashed some sardines on toast this morning instead of stuffing your head with sugary puffs of air you would have remembered where THE Continent is. I mean it’s not like there’s more than one of them.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 28/03/2023 13:18

The Continent gave us the portal to sin that is the continental quilt. So I wouldn't have faith in anything they do or say there.

Outnumberedmummy2022 · 28/03/2023 13:18

mine Have a bowl of cereal and take a snack for morning break. They have never complained of hunger

To be clear, I gave my children sugary air this morning but I didn't eat that shit, of course.

(I had a hot cross bun at 10.30 instead)

Antiquiteas · 28/03/2023 13:19

Nah, I refuse to believe a poster who likened Rice Krispies to fags and chocolate is not on a wind up, @CallintheClownies 😆 and if you’re not, you’re endlessly entertaining without meaning to be.

What is the quote - 'on the continent people have sex lives, in England they have hot water bottles'?

Netrandom · 28/03/2023 09:22

I give mine homemade muesli and eggs from our hens with occasional fruit treats, but hey you do you

I hope your hens are free range and organic and your muesli sugar free, or it's child abuse.

Littleloveydovey · 28/03/2023 13:21

They are his kids too op and he gets to make decisions just like you. His decisions are just as valid. A bowl of rice crispies with some fruit is totally fine. I think you should apologise.

SpongeBob2022 · 28/03/2023 13:25

I don't think rice crispies are all that healthy but in relation to the actual question I think they are fine as a breakfast. A bowl of cereal is literally marketed as such.

I have a bowl of wheatabix with a bit of fruit on for breakfast and I would struggle to eat more than that first thing, even as an adult. I do eat a snack mid-morning but then I assume this can apply at school too.

a far more godly pursuit to hug a water bottle than to be rolling about like a naked pagan under a continental quilt.

northernbeee · 28/03/2023 13:26

A bowl of rice crispies (with milk) and some fruit is more an enough for a 3&6 year old. They will get a morning snack, they won't starve.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 28/03/2023 13:27

Rice Krispies and fruit is a decent breakfast imo

You need to google what rice crispies are cos they're not 'puffs of air' 😅

It's Puffed rice, so it is really
