DH thinks rice crispies are a suitable breakfast

thisismyheart · 28/03/2023 07:46

That's it really, DH would happily send children (3&6) off to school/childminder on one bowl of rice crispies and a bit of fruit in the morning. I feel very strongly about filling kids tummies properly before school, and while i have no problem with a bowl of rice crispies now and then, that they are ultimately just puffs of air, and the children need something more nutritionally dense.

We argued about it properly this morning, and now he's in a huff about me undermining him. I just want to guage what others think - is a bowl of rice crispies and a bit of fruit enough to keep a child's energy levels up all morning?

Rice crispies are largely sugar...so yes crap

WilsonMilson · 28/03/2023 09:42

It’s totally fine, I think you’re being ridiculous. It’s not as if they ONLY eat rice crispies for every meal. This is not a hill I would die on.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 28/03/2023 09:42

Thing is, anyone can call themselves a nutritionist. There's politics and money on both sides, but one side have training and certification.

Mumof3confused · 28/03/2023 09:34

No, I am not a dietitian. Dietitians predominantly work in hospitals with people who are already sick - for example those with T1 diabetes or chronic kidney disease. Nutritionists are more concerned with optimal health and nutrition, and preventing disease, which is surely what we all want for our children and society as a whole. The NHS is on its knees, mainly due to entirely preventable disease caused by lifestyle choices perpetuated by the ‘Big Food’ industry - think Nestle, Coca Cola etc. And by the way, those companies are sponsors of dietetic education.

I’d be careful with that attitude on dietitians vs nutritionists.

Anyone can call themselves a nutritionist. Most of them are just charlatans and give terrible advice as they have no expert knowledge or qualifications.

Also YABU calling the food cupboard a pantry 😂

It's ultra processed and has added sugar and salt so different to a bowl of rice.

I meant in terms of filling you up, as in it seems like puffs of air but there is actually something to it?

Is one puff one grain of rice? We need an episode of Inside the Factory!

Rubbish. Unless they are coco pops then they do not have added sugar at all and are actually one of the low sugar cereals.

Bree82 · 28/03/2023 09:37

omg I remember pop tarts!

They where the best 2 of them before school was a great way to start the day

FfeminyddCymraeg · 28/03/2023 09:43

I’m lucky if my DD (15) picks up a pop tart (chocolate fudge, too) or a croissant on the way to the school bus these days.

There’s no way she’d sit down and eat the infamous MN breakfasts of porridge, fruit, toast and eggs when there’s hair and make up to be done…😇

853ax · 28/03/2023 09:44

If concerned about them not being full a happy medium could be a weetabix in with rice crispies.
When we have the nice cereal ( rice crispies, crunchie nuts ECT) they usually mix bit porridge oats or weetabix in with them half half.
Use full fat or super milk( added vitamins) think that the good part breakfast anyhow

Kanaloa · 28/03/2023 09:31

Why is toast better than cereal with milk and fruit? Toast is just bread. Why is a slice of bread more ‘nutritious and filling’ than a bowl of cereal with milk and fruit?

Cereal is very refined and has a lot more added sugar , if you have a decent wholemeal bread with maybe avocado or nut butter I think it is much better.

PurpleWisteria1 · 28/03/2023 09:44

i Know where you are coming from OP. Rice kirispies have nothing nutritious about them really and they don’t keep anyone full for long.
But then cereal generally is pretty much junk food in the main anyway.
Some kids need more in the morning and some kids just like something light. I have both types of kids!
If your kids are saying rice Krispys are not enough then I agree they need something more filling. Just down to personal preference of each child surely?

jays · 28/03/2023 09:45

I would have sent my child out on a bowl of rice crispies no. There’s zero nutrition and loaded with sugar. Either a more substantial wholegrain sugar free cereal or muesli with fruit or preferably scrambled egg on toast for the protein.

Whiteroomjoy · 28/03/2023 09:45

Snowpaw · 28/03/2023 09:17

I agree with you. There is a noticeable difference in my daughter's concentration, energy and ability to sit and play independently depending on what she's had for breakfast. I try and rotate between eggy bread, boiled egg and soldiers, pancakes with fruit, porridge with nut butter or nut butter on toast and fruit. Basically, some fat and protein in there somewhere.

Ok, but not everyone has time for that on working days. Weekends yes.
And a lot of kids are intolerant to egg based dishes at young age. Took it a while to realise one of my DS projectile vomiting within 2 hours of a meal was down to egg based breakfast or lunches. But as he got to teens it suddenly was ok. I know, post menopausally find I’m the same- eggs in stuff with a bigger meal is fine but a poached egg on toast for lunch, or a boiled egg for breakfast will have me vomiting and diarrhoea within 60 mins. Such a shame.

Hoolihan · 28/03/2023 09:45

Instant porridge takes about one minute to make.

GimmeSleep · 28/03/2023 09:46

Got to page 11 and now I'm off to have a Pop Tart 😋

How do you know the poster doesnt use the sugar free ones

They're pro biotics and good for gut health

They are a TOTAL con

Just thinking about my childhood diet in the 80s seems so bad right now lol. But it was so good. So many fun foods haha

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 28/03/2023 09:47

I’m thinking of doing eggy bread for my nephew when he comes over at the weekend, how is that better than rice crispies if it’s fried?!

Don’t worry I usually have porridge and blueberries, low sugar alpen, fruit loaf, fruit bagels and normal bagels plus shock horror strawberry jam, peanut butter etc!

vamptable · 28/03/2023 09:48

I wouldn't have breakfast at all from being young as it made me feel sick to eat so soon after waking (I am still the same). It made absolutely no difference to my development or performance at school.

So YABU - rice crispies & fruit is substantial enough. Not the most nutritionally dense cereal but definitely not a big enough deal to be getting worked up over

Hoolihan · 28/03/2023 09:48

I remember Weetabix from when I was a kid, cold mushy hell in a bowl. My mum sonetimes added some mushy banana on top to really enhance the experience.

I work too. Boiled egg takes 8 minutes. In the time that's cooking I lay table, make the toast and drink and its done. Pancake batter I make night before and leave in fridge. It doesn't take that long.

You can give muesli without a lot of sugar plus there is fibre etc in fruit not just added sugar like in rice Krispies. Also you can give plain yogurt.

Of course there are lots of low/no sugar options instead of cereal. My point was that if you’re going to choose any cereal off the shelf, Rice Krispies is one of the lowest in added sugar. That’s a priority for me.
