Toddlers - Disney movies - Please vote

NC for this - I am fuming!

So, I have a DS that goes to a gymnastics class for 3-4 year olds with parents present.

The instructor asked the kids last time who is the princess that likes snow and some kids replied “Elsa” . Then the instructor asked “And what Elsa does to things with the snow? They make them…” and then she expected the kids to say “Freeze”. She did all of that to teach them how to “freeze” and stop moving.

My point is that Frozen and many other Disney movies are not recommended by Disney to be watched by kids less than 5 years old and they should be watched with parental supervision up until 8 years old as there are some upsetting scenes.

For this reason our 3 year old DS has never watched Frozen, Moana etc. He just watched Peppa Pig, Bluey, Paw Patrol, Hollie & Ben etc.

Was it appropriate for the instructor to expect the 3 year olds kids to have watched Disney movies in order to participate in the class?

I honestly felt so sorry for our DS during the class! He is a very reserved and shy boy when in public and this whole thing just made it all even worse.

What do you all think?

YABU - Frozen is fine for 3 year olds
YANBU - Frozen is not fine until 5 year old as advised by Disney

I think some of us MN mums are reacting to the "fuming" comment

As I said earlier, I suspect it's a PFB thing

I hate to tell OP that my older DCs had my youngest watching Power rangers and ninja turtles before she could walk..! Disney /Pixar movies so much better and more suitable... Grin. And if baby of our family had kept Daddy Pig snorting & being obstinate any more than she already did, I might have banned that...

So many positive messages & behaviour in the more recent Disney and Pixar movies

deveronvalley · 27/03/2023 15:14

The teacher was just trying to be relatable, obviously it worked in some cases as some kids did know the answer. Now your kid knows the answer and might answer if this crops up again. FREEZE! He'll know it means stay still and can easily participate next time they do it. He doesn't need to have seen the movie and there will be other children in the class that haven't seen it - they will now be at the same advanced level of 'freezing' as the Frozen watchers, no harm done :)

I can't believe how many people here let their children watch inappropriate films. My neighbours cousin let her child watch Frozen and Frozen 2 aged 4 and then the next year her child's teeth started falling out!

Let that be a warning to you all.

Oh no! Her toothapeggers fell
out?! The shock I'm sure . Wink

I also have a 3yo boy who has never seen Frozen. I don't think I would be "fuming" if a group leader asked his something about Frozen and someone else answered, though. Hmm

How did it stop him participating in the class? Someone else (child or instructor) will have said Freeze and then they all crack on practising freezing.

If he asked you about it afterwards you could have just said eg Yes, Frozen is a story about a princess who can freeze things.

For the record I did watch Paddington with mine when he was 2.5 and that is (unexpectedly to me) pretty scary. All the scary bits went totally over his head.

TiaraBoo · 27/03/2023 15:18

My first child didn’t watch Disney until, well no idea. Definitely not at 2-3 as she didn’t have the attention span. She did have Disney books and colouring pictures and things like that.

Does it really matter though? It’s all a learning experience. Not everyone knows or cares about Elsa.

RichardHeed · 27/03/2023 15:19

This does make me laugh because peppa pig has. 4-6 age rating if you Google, some sites say Bluey is 3+. Common sense is truly a dead concept isn’t it.

JulieHoney · 27/03/2023 15:25

That is one massive overreaction.

The songs are great. Even if you're sure he shouldn't watch the film (it's Frozen, not Nightmare on Elm Street) he'd probably very much enjoy the soundtrack. If he's at nursery they probably play it. Disney playlists are pretty common.

Frozenprincess · 27/03/2023 15:26

Just to clarify things, firstly the word “fuming” as I said was too much as a word.

Secondly, he participated well at the class but this is not the point of the thread. Of course, this Elsa thing during the class was a very small part of the class but I felt sorry for him that he couldn’t understand what the instructor was asking.

Thirdly, of course I mentioned nothing to the instructor! I am a polite and sensible person, just different on what a 3 year old should do.

Also at this age, kids should not be exposed to screens more than an hour every day. This is the recommendation from WHO. Are you all against that too?

How much Peppa Pig/Ben and Holly/Bluey do you let him watch? The nursery will use screens too. You're probably going against that some days without even knowing it.

Realistically, we're all just doing our best. You don't need to start being shirty because people have told you you're being dramatic.

Prinnny · 27/03/2023 15:28

DD has been a firm fan of Disney since 2, and more so the older scary ones..here’s your precious princess etc, she loves it, I love it, all her nursery friends love it. We had a fab time at Disneyland, love Disney on ice and have most of the fancy dress costumes.

Are you sure your fuming-ness isn’t faux concern for those poor children who’s parents aren’t as responsible as you…

shakeitoffsis · 27/03/2023 15:29

What the hell. My 3 year old knows every word to frozen and encanto she's obsessed. I love her getting in character and copying them it's adorable. Lighten up.

ThanksItHasPockets · 27/03/2023 15:29

Soundtracks aren't on screens, OP.

Some children will have watched the full films from start to finish but most children at this age are familiar with Disney characters through songs, short clips, or branded merchandise such as colouring books.

thaegumathteth · 27/03/2023 15:30

Oh OP you'll tie yourself up in knots googling everything about parenting and abiding by millions of rules.

Trust your instinct. Seriously, parenting is hard enough.

Well done on your mother of the year award. Sadly I missed out this year as I let my kids watch TV for hours a day while they eat haribo and smoke fags.

Sitting on a Sunday cuddled up on the sofa with your 3 yo watching a Disney film is lovely, doesn't mean they are ruined with too much screen time. Many of the early Disney films are 80/90 mins long. Not Titanic levels or anything. These guidelines are there to help people who have no common sense, not a rule book to follow to the letter.

ThanksItHasPockets · 27/03/2023 15:31

Do you have any parent friends, OP? Maybe from baby groups or similar?

GoodChat · 27/03/2023 15:31

Just put the subtitles on and he'll be reading

Fags are really bad for them, at least get them vapes!

Lovelyring · 27/03/2023 15:32

I voted yabu, although I don't let my toddler watch Disney yet either. There will always be popular culture references that individuals won't understand. It's not like the teacher was talking about the Exorcist. Sounds like your ds wasn't the only one not to know the answer.

My DC doesn't watch Pepper Pig but I wouldn't get upset if their teacher mentioned it.

You are really not coming across well with comments like this.

I am real!

My son will turn 3 years old this week actually. He is just about 3, not close to 4 and a bit speech delayed and bilingual.

I don’t know any frozen songs, we have only been to two birthday parties (they only two friends from nursery had) and there was no frozen music to none of them.

I don’t have any older kids and so he doesn’t have any bigger siblings to get exposed to things that are bot age appropriate.

He sings things like twinkle twinkle little star and incy wincy spider.

Is this not normal for a just about 3 year old?

OP I mean this with kindness but you really need to chill a bit (no pun intended) otherwise you are going to emotionally exhausted by the time he goes to school,

There are worse things for little ones than a bit of supervised Disney. I say this as someone who f'ing hates Disney.

Agree with pp about Peppa Pig. Grin

I know you are joking but there is a significant body of evidence about the positive impact on children's literacy of subtitles!

Yep, most Disney movies are five and over. I was always surprised when dc's peers were/are into things that weren't recommended for their age. As proven by this thread, most parents
don't care apparently.
You know your child and you chose what is appropriate for them - don't feel pressured (or surprised) by what is popular.

That's one hell of a reach about the parenting of others Confused
