AIBU to worry this might kill me?

Ok, slightly dramatic title. I know it won't kill me but, as an emetophobe, I have concerns.

Cooked a roast turkey dinner yesterday. Popped left over turkey, veg & roast potatoes into a tub ready to go in the fridge once cooled. Totally forgot as didn't go back in the kitchen before I went to bed.

Did put in the fridge at 8am this morning when I realised I'd left it out over night.

Will this be safe to eat? Am I being ridiculous? Light hearted, please be kind.

I wouldn't eat any poultry or fish that I'm not 100% certain about and I happily pick up and eat food dropped on the floor or food that's past it's date but seems good.

Cigarettesaftersex1 · 27/03/2023 16:29

Another one voting for yes, I regularly do this as I always forget to put the chicken in the fridge after I've stripped it off the still hot carcass....still here to tell the tail

SmallAngryPenguinWoman · 27/03/2023 16:30

It's been freezing here overnight (-3) so I'd be fine eating that, once reheated. How warm was your house overnight?

But the turkey wasn't in the garden...

piedbeauty · 27/03/2023 16:49

Op, I wouldn't. You can't smell or see bacteria!

All the advice is not to leave any turkey out of the fridge for any longer than two hours. It's not worth the hassle/risk/worry IME.

BookishBabe · 27/03/2023 16:50

I would. I never put a takeaway in the fridge. Usually just put it in tupperware tubs and heat it for 3 to 4 minutes in the morning (usually have it for breakfast) and never had a problem. That's pretty much my rule on all leftovers. Never threw up and not yet died.

InSpainTheRain · 27/03/2023 17:01

I wouldn't eat it - unless your kitchen is freezing.

🙄
No, but if the heat wasn't on in the house overnight, the house could be quite cool. Ours certainly would be.

Christ, MN is getting more and more nit-picky.

Peachy2005 · 27/03/2023 17:07

My granny used to put the Xmas turkey on top of the chest freezer in hallway outside the kitchen and everyone walking past would graze on turkey for DAYS afterwards. Nobody was ever harmed; it might have had foil over it, maybe not… I sometimes forget like you did so I would eat it myself in your situation but not give to the kids, I would try to use it up today and nuke it a bit extra in microwave.

Upsidedownagain · 27/03/2023 17:17

I have never given myself food poisoning and eat food beyond the sell by date etc, depending on what it is. I've done similar to you and hastily put it in the fridge in the morning. But I have a queasy relationship with turkey - once left the Christmas carcase in a (cold) cupboard for a couple of days by mistake and threw the whole lot away. I'm just not that fond of it to take the risk. It's not worth it.

ASGIRC · 27/03/2023 17:22

I regularly leave cooked food out overnight, and particularly when its still cold, I would not worry about it. If it was peak summer, during a heat wave, Id probably worry a bit more (and do a smell test before eating it)
Food does not spoil that easily.

waterlego · 27/03/2023 17:24

I would but my kitchen is absolutely freezing.

joongkivincenzo · 27/03/2023 17:26

I leave cooked chicken in the oven (when cooled, both oven and chicken) and eat it the next day, never poisoned my family.
I often forget or family forgets to put leftovers in the fridge, no one's had food poisoning. That said, I wouldn't do it in the height of summer- for those few days!
My mother and grandmother always used the cold oven as a food store for chicken, meat etc. once cold it stays insulated and cold!

Wallywobbles · 27/03/2023 17:43

It'll be fine. Meat should not be wasted. A living being has died to feed you.

AgnesX · 27/03/2023 17:47

It's only overnight and unless you live in Bali rather than somewhere with temperatures like Basildon you'll be fine

I wouldn't and am fairly blasé about other things, poultry is a no!

Why is poultry a no? It’s fully cooked!

Herbiebanannas · 27/03/2023 17:51

It’s no worse than putting a sandwich in your car and then desk draw or bag for hours until you eat it. It will be absolutely fine.

KrisAkabusi · 27/03/2023 14:07

My mother never put the turkey in our tiny fridge after Christmas dinner, just though a towel over it until it was all eaten by the 27th. Never did any harm. I'd happily eat yours.

Haha me too! I think our kitchen must have been freezing!

Time4achangeagain · 27/03/2023 18:08

Ps I sometimes forget to put the chicken in the fridge until the next morning as well. It’s always fine. I don’t think I’d do it in a heatwave though

Feebeedeebee · 27/03/2023 20:43

Thank you! Bit of a split decision. Some asked about the heating. My thermostat hasn't been above 18 all winter and the heating isn't on overnight.

It passed the sniff test so I chanced it. Veg and roasts turned into bubble & squeak and everything was cooked throughly.

How long does it take for food poisoning to kick in? Confused

CheersForThatEh · 27/03/2023 20:45

It's fine. The point of a fridge is to keep things cool to prevent bacteria growth. So there may be faster growth if left on the side but I wouldnt expect harmful levels in that timeframe. Not long ago people only had pantries. X

As I'm sure you know...

The reason for concern with poultry is when it's uncooked/ not properly cooked.

Those concerns don't apply after it has been properly cooked.

I'm really surprised this needs saying on MN

Surplus2requirements · 27/03/2023 20:51

@Feebeedeebee good for you. I hate unnecessary, ill informed food waste. Especially meats.

Dammit I'm hungry now!

In this instance, food poisoning won’t kick in on your lifetime because there won’t be any.

The fact that people would throw that out and genuinely think it might make them ill blows my mind.

What percentage of the worlds population do these people even think own a fridge?

Epicstorm · 27/03/2023 20:52

I wouldn’t eat it but I have a very weak stomach. Have you got a dog? It won’t upset him/her.
