I do not understand snacks

Yellowdaffodila · 27/03/2023 10:52

So I'm not from the UK and I hear and read about the snack thing all the time.
What is a snack? When I take my children out I'm asked to bring snacks. They will be home for food after our trip. They eat breakfast. Why a snack?

People eat fucking shock horror.
People like food.
People eat when hungry.
People eat when not hungry
People eat when something looks tasty or they have a friend round.
People just eat
You don't need to understand
Food isn't the devil.
Do.dont.its just food.
Eat when you want.need.
Let your kids ha e snacks.its OK. You don't need to understand it.

The concept of a small snack between meals is hardly specific to the UK, nor would I term it an obsession. Even if you are having 3 meals a day it's hardly earth shattering to grab an apple or a bag of crisps or even shock horror a BISCUIT in between.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 27/03/2023 12:09

It wasn't a thing when I was younger but snacks seem to be pretty standard now - hence the UK's issue with obesity. It's rare to see any child or adult walking around these days without food or drink in their paws.

The problem with snacks is control. Healthy snacks are fine. The occasional non healthy one is fine too.

The main issue with kids who are used to snacks 2 to 3 times a day is when they get their own money and allowed out alone. They believe that snacks are ok if hungry and will think nothing of buying crisps, biscuits, bars etc...from the corner shop or eating a whole pack of biscuits coming home from school rather than the 2 or 3 they were allowed before.

Threads about teenagers eating all the snacks in the first few days of shopping are frequent enough.

Obesity is a massive issue and now it's affecting a forever increasing number of teenagers and kids. Snacks are a significant if not the main contribution of the problem.

Wrong

OP I don't understand why you don't understand snacks. I think you do but your being faux naive.

This thread is making the word “snack” appear really strange to me.

My DS gets very hangry. That is easily solved by giving him a banana.

Absolutely. But bananas are healthy .
Not what I’d call a snack!

We’re not really a snacking family but I understand that people sometimes get hungry between meals. If I’m going out somewhere I’ll bring a snack for the kids so we don’t have to rush back for lunch. A ‘snack’ doesn’t have to be unhealthy! It can be fruit, veg sticks etc

Itsgottobeme · 27/03/2023 12:13

Weird too how the world obsession with bodies, weight stigma, snacking food issues and diet culture also correlates with our "obesity problem"

My 11 month old gets more than 2 snacks 🤣 but he's happy and healthy.

Stravawindow · 27/03/2023 12:15

A most odd thread. My DS doesn’t like a big meal. He eats 5 or 6 small meals a day instead. Could be a snack I suppose. Might not. May be a mini meal.

I hope you only let them lick an apple and sniff some milk for breakfast, wouldn’t want them having too much and getting all fat. 😂

Snacks aren't an everyday thing for most people until they have small children at which point you basically never go anywhere without a snack.

I try not to snack as an adult.

peachgreen · 27/03/2023 12:17

My kid doesn't have snacks because she doesn't need them. She doesn't really get hungry between meals and eats a good portion at mealtimes. Her best friend turns into a raving MONSTER without snacks, she eats little and often and always has done. Just like adults, kids are different.

Well, except they almost certainly are, you just don't tend to refer to them as a snack. Biscuit with your cuppa mid morning? Grab a banana on your way home from the gym? Got the munchies sometime after dinner and go looking for a yoghurt or some chocolate while you're watching TV? I suspect the vast majority of people do this on a regular basis. You just only really start referring to those food items as 'snacks' when you have children...

My youngest, thinnest, child loves to snack. She has been known to stand up from the table where she has just eaten dinner and ask for a snack as she’s still hungry. Eat more dinner then!

kirinm · 27/03/2023 12:19

I should add, my DD eats well but still the first thing she asks for when I pick her up from school is a snack. She also asks for a snack when I pick her up from after school club - at which, she is given a snack. She will then come home and have a massive dinner.

She is a tiny slender little thing because she doesn't stop moving and is incredibly active. The snacks are things like a satsuma, an apple, cucumber, yo-yos. They're not big bags of sweets or sandwiches.

SherbetDips · 27/03/2023 12:19

I don’t offer snacks, they need to eat their food at meal times.
