AIBU cancelling my TV Licence direct debit?

Heliosdeep · 27/03/2023 08:25

In the wake of the Gary Lineker saga and the weakness of the BBC I cancelled my direct debit. Currently at £159 for a yearly licence I thought this was a waste of money. The only thing I would have missed would gave been the Great British Bake Off but now that Alison Hammond is fronting it I would have struggled to get past her incredibly irritating voice.

I've not watched it once since cancelling and haven't missed it. Has anyone else done the same and AIBU cancelling?

YANBU. I haven’t paid the license TV in years and still watch live TV. I just never watch BBC stuff. I just bin the letters, they’ve never visited my house that I know of.

thispostisaboutyou · 27/03/2023 08:28

Isn't bake off on channel 4 anyway?

Random789 · 27/03/2023 08:28

Of course it isn't unreasonable to cancel it, providing you aren't using any of the services it pays for, including iplayer.

... also including BBC radio, and live TV on any channels.

Changingplace · 27/03/2023 08:33

Bake off has been on Channel 4 for a good few years now, cancel for whatever reason you like but at least be aware what it is & isn’t paying for 😂

Newusernameaug · 27/03/2023 08:34

I cancelled it years ago, never missed it

Heliosdeep · 27/03/2023 08:34

Gosh I'm a twit re Bake Off being on C4!!

OP posts:
undergroundstation · 27/03/2023 08:35

C4 is covered by the TV licence tho - you can’t watch that either, or ITV.

abigailsnan · 27/03/2023 08:39

Thats awful of you do you cancel paying for everything you don't agree with I object to be paying towards others its just sociably unacceptable you don't just pay for BBC,do you not pay for Council Tax etc because you don't use the Fire Brigade/Police etc or are you exempt from them also.

Crap! If the user is not consuming BBC live services then why the hell should she pay for a license ??

MynameisJune · 27/03/2023 08:43

We’ve cancelled ours but it does say ‘any live TV’ so not just BBC. We watch Netflix/prime etc only now. Haven’t missed terrestrial TV at all.

Username917778 · 27/03/2023 08:43

I cancelled mine years ago and really don't miss it. We aren't big TV watchers anyway (waste my time on my phone instead) but we have disney+ and Netflix to watch movies on. I do listen to radio 6 though, not sure if that is allowed or not!

BarbaraofSeville · 27/03/2023 08:45

If you don't watch BBC, use the iPlayer or live or recorded TV on any channel then you don't need a TV licence so how could you be unreasonable for cancelling it? You can still watch Bake Off on All4, so just do that for free.

I agree that £159 a year can seem poor value compared with Netflix, Disney etc but I watch quite a few things on the BBC, so would miss it if we didn't have it, so we keep paying for the TV licence.

Why do you like to give out obviously incorrect information?

We cancelled years ago. We only use Nettlix/Disney etc and don't listen to the radio either. Don't miss it at all.

6 Music isn’t made for free, so no you shouldn’t listen to it or any BBC radio stations if you’ve not paid for a licence.

StillWantingADog · 27/03/2023 08:48

I think technically you have to “switch off” all terrestrial channels including itv and c4 to be able to legitimately cancel the licence without penalty.

no idea how good/bad they are at checking though. It used to be the case that they could tell which houses had a signal going to them but with most tv digital these days I’m not sure how they would

You can't watch it live, but you can watch it on the "All4" service

EmmaEmerald · 27/03/2023 08:50

OP have you filled in the declaration?

I haven't done live TV or BBC for a while now.

6 Music isn’t made for free though, I don’t think people should listen regularly without a licence even if technically you can.

Do you pay for mumsnet?

3littlebeans · 27/03/2023 08:51

I've loved the recent autism documentary by Chris Packham. And the BBC dramas like Unforgotten.

Some really good stuff. But no don't pay for it if you never watch iplayer. We do so we pay.
