AIBU cancelling my TV Licence direct debit?

In the wake of the Gary Lineker saga and the weakness of the BBC I cancelled my direct debit. Currently at £159 for a yearly licence I thought this was a waste of money. The only thing I would have missed would gave been the Great British Bake Off but now that Alison Hammond is fronting it I would have struggled to get past her incredibly irritating voice.

I've not watched it once since cancelling and haven't missed it. Has anyone else done the same and AIBU cancelling?

Jeesus christ on a cracker - I don't quite know where to start. Who else makes wildlife shows like us, Line of Duty, The Cleaner, This Country, Strictly, 24 hour news, Python, Inside Number 9, CBeebis and CBBC, Mr Maker, Doctor Who, Sherlock, Merlin, Luther, Top Gear, Death In Paradise, People Just Do Nothing...I could write this list all night. You focus on not paying the licence fee - but if I don't pay a speeding fine, the same thing happens. Don't come the victim - it tells of someone who has no argument, but wishes to moan and point. It's not clever.

I haven't heard of half of those. Of those I have, Top Gear wasn't worth watching after Clarkson et al left, other broadcasters produce rolling news too, and if Doctor Who is so profitable then it can be funded by a combination of BBC Worldwide income and a subscription that would replace the licence fee. The subscription could be tailored so that those who want to pay for the drivel can pay for it (as a poster above said, the BBC is not immune to imbecilic content), those who want to watch sport can pay for that etc.

Well, in that case, you really need to take a good hard look at what that would mean. It means packaging lies for profit - pure and simple. If thats what you want, we will never agree because that is dangerous and existentially threatening to all of us. I suspect and hope you are trolling.

Parrot out - see you all in the apocalypse

I have no strong feelings on OFCOM at all, but I do think you overestimate the importance of television. No one under 50 uses it as a source of news nowadays anyway!

I'm under 50 and watch the news, where do other under 50s get their news from, do they just get it from places like twitter or Facebook

YouTube, websites, Twitter, newspapers.

Do people still buy newspapers nowadays, that's even more old fashioned than watching TV

Tribblesarelovely · 29/03/2023 19:02

BBC has some great dramas, Attenborough is worth the fee alone.

In your opinion ,these things are subjective.

"You need to be covered by a TV Licence to watch live on streaming services"

@MrNook
@Adelant

ok I'm clearly even more confused than I thought.

i thought the point of streaming was so you could just choose something to watch. Live streaming seems like an oxymoron to me. Though I'm just the latter half of that!!

brsin fog is real issue for me, most everything just seems too complicated to sort out, so might just have to stick with Virgin and paying the tv licence for now & hope to get my unfogged brain back one day. It's a horrible horrible thing to have!!

Don't scare Parrot off please, I'm looking forward to "I'm flouncing off and never coming back again" part III tonight.

She's probably too busy polishing her emmy.
